Relativity Media has taken U.S. rights to Carlo Carlei’s adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” starring Hailee Steinfeld as Juliet and Douglas Booth as Romeo, and plans a Sept. 6 limited release.
The film was shot early last year in Italy in Mantua, the Northern Italian city to which Romeo was banished in the play, and at Rome’s Cinecitta Studios. Producers have been touting “Romeo and Juliet” as an ageless story reimagined for the 21st Century and told in the traditional setting it was written.
Julian Fellowes (“Downton Abbey”) penned the script and produced along with Ileen Maisel, Lawrence Elman, Julian Fellowes, Nadja Swarovski, Simon Bosanquet, Alexander Koll, Dimitra Tsingou, Doug Mankoff and Andrew Spaulding as a co-production of Amber Entertainment, Swarovski Entertainment and Echo Lake Entertainment.
Cast includes Paul Giamatti, Damian Lewis (“Homeland”), Ed Westwick (“Gossip Girl”), Stellan Skarsgard and Leslie Manville.

Hailee Steinfeld may have a shot at some sort of record for most projects confirmed and unreleased at one time, with a handful of pending credits including “Romeo and Juliet,” “Ender’s Game,” and Tommy Lee Jones’ “The Homesman,” which was recently announced. Now she’s adding to that list -- Deadline reports that Steinfeld has signed on to Kyle Newman’s “Barely Lethal,” in which she will play a trained teenage assassin attending a regular high school. Steinfeld’s involvement is one part of the news. The other is the film itself, which comes to us from the director of “Fanboys.” Obviously, the title "Barely Lethal" is somewhat provocative, but the logline provided on IMDb is just plain off-putting. “A 16-year-old international assassin yearning for a ‘normal’ adolescence fakes her own death and enrolls as a senior in a suburban high school. She quickly learns that being popular can be more painful than getting. »

For Julian Fellowes, straying so far from the plot of animated hit Gnomeo & Juliet could only end in tragedy, as this trailer shows
Julian Fellowes might be responsible for Downton Abbey, the Titanic mini-series and that film where Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie mumbled interminably at each other in Venice, but now he faces his sternest task yet: adapting a classic work of literature.
Yes, there's going to be a new Romeo and Juliet film. This one has been written for the screen by Fellowes, directed by Carlo Carlei and stars Douglas Booth and Hailee Steinfeld as the titular star-crossed lovers. At first glance, the story seems to be a straight live-action update of 2011's Gnomeo & Juliet, where two young people fall in love against the wishes of their warring families; then there's a needlessly long Rocket Man medley, a ceramic frog falls over and everyone lives happily ever after. »

Two film adaptations, both alike in writer in the world of cinema where we lay our scene, from silent movies to colourful modernised versions, where poor performances make Shakespeare’s words unclean. From forth the respected pen of Julian Fellowes and Joss Whedon, a pair of Shakespeare adaptations hit the screen.
It’s often cited as the greatest love story ever told; a statement that completely ignores the chemistry between Heather Graham and Matt Le Blanc in Lost I Space. But we have a new version of Romeo And Juliet on its way, from the writer of Downton Abbey. This film takes the story back to its roots and probably won’t involve guns or a bombastic soundtrack. The trailer’s a bit spoiler filled, so I don’t see why anyone would want to watch this in the cinema. They die…apparently. It also looks a bit dreary and nothing new. »

Kids in fair Verona where we lay our tale, eh? What a handful. Disrespecting their families’ feuds, hooking up, getting into unsanctioned fights and then – spoiler alert for anyone not aware of the centuries-old play – offing themselves in some sort of romantic suicide pact. No manners, you see? Still, people keep adapting Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet for the screen and here comes the latest, courtesy of director Carlo Carlei and screenwriter Julian Fellowes. Check out the trailer below. In this re-telling of the star-crossed lovers’ tale, True Grit's Hailee Steinfeld is Juliet with Douglas Booth is Romeo. We follow their feuding families and their growing attraction as the story spirals towards tragedy and… look… you can read the play. A trailer is out for the new Romeo and Juliet movie. This adaptation is directed by Carlo Carlei (Flight of the Innocent) and stars Douglas Booth (The Pillars of the Earth) as Romeo and Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) as Juliet.
My initial reaction while watching the trailer for this honest adaptation of Romeo and Juliet was why bother?
At this stage in the Romeo and Juliet game, if you’re not going to do something wildly creative or unique like Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet (1996) then why bother?
Then, I saw Paul Giamatti as the Friar and realized that Hailee Steinfeld (who was great in True Grit) plays Juliet. Dammit. I can’t write this one off just yet.
Also, the new Romeo is in Darren Aronofsky’s upcoming Noah. Aronofsky (Pi, The Wrestler, Black Swan) is an elite director and if he picked up Booth for his Noah project, »

Sneak Peek the first trailer from director Carlo Carlei’s new adaptation of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet", written by Julian Fellowes starring Hailee Steinfeld, Douglas Booth, Paul Giamatti, Stellan Skarsgard, Emmy award winner Damian Lewis, Ed Westwick, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Natascha McElhone:
"...'Romeo and Juliet' portrays the long-standing quarrel between the two established families in Verona, the 'Capulets' and the 'Montagues', that prevent Romeo and Juliet from being able to profess their love openly.
"The climax occurs when Romeo kills himself by drinking poison, believing Juliet is dead. When Juliet discovers the death of her husband, she kills herself, wanting to be with her lover through eternity. Their deaths, however, bring to a final close the age-old quarrel between the Capulets and Montagues..."

Here we have yet another adaptation of the classic Shakespeare play Romeo and Juliet. Directed by Italy’s Carlo Carlei, this new take on the classic story has quite the pedigree in terms of cast and script, coming from Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes. With an ensemble including Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth, as well as Damian Lewis, Ed Westwick, Paul Giamatti and Stellan Skarsgård.
I think the film looks soulless, offering nothing different than previous tellings. Here's the trailer in all its "glory". Are you excited for yet another Romeo and Juliet?

It's not revisionist and it's not flashy -- in other words, it's not Baz Luhrmann's modernistic vision. But it does feature 16-year-old Hailee Steinfeld and a script by Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellows. The new version of Romeo and Juliet stars Steinfeld (True Grit) and Douglas Booth (Darren Aronofsky's upcoming Noah) as the teenage lovers, with a supporting cast led by Damian Lewis and Paul Giamatti. Stellan Skarsgård intones the openings words in the trailer, which lays out the tragic romance for those who may not have been paying attention in school. Carlo Carlei directed. The traditional approach as worked well on period television shows, but the real appeal here is the cast. Can Steinfeld, who was so good in True Grit, not only pull...

The first trailer for the newest adaptation of Romeo and Juliet is now online, and there’s plenty of ancient grudges, unclean civil hands, and death-marked love on display in this peek at the film.
While the other buzzy Shakespeare adaptation of 2013 — Joss Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing — went the route of a fresh, modern interpretation, this Romeo and Juliet is going back to the play’s Elizabethan roots, with period costumes, a shoot in Verona and other Italy locations, and a young pair of actors playing the leads. The film’s Juliet, Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit), who shot »

Remember that new movie version of "Romeo and Juliet" that "True Grit" star Hailee Steinfeld was attached to? Yeah, we had completely forgotten about it, too, but now there's a trailer to jog our memories.
Directed by Carlo Carlei and starring Douglas Booth as Romeo, this newfangled "R&J" looks decidedly ... calmer than Baz Luhrmann's game-changing 1996 version starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. But hey, it's, you know, a pretty good script by a fella named Bill Shakespeare, if we remember correctly, and it's nice to see Steinfeld in a more girly-girl role as compared to her terrific tomboyish turn in "True Grit."
The supporting cast is pretty great, too, with Kodi Smit-McPhee as Benvolio, Damian Lewis as Lord Capulet, Natascha McElhone as Lady Capulet, Lesley Manville as the Nurse, Ed Westwick as Tybalt, Paul Giamatti as Friar Laurence, Christian Cooke as Mercutio, Tomas Arana as Lord Montague, Laura Morante as Lady Montague, »

Brush up your Shakespeare! The newest star-encrusted 'Romeo and Juliet' screen version of the Bard's tragic romance finally has a trailer. Penned by "Downton Abbey" creator Julian Fellowes -- who won the original screenplay Oscar in 2002 for Robert Altman's high society mystery "Gosford Park" -- and directed by Carlo Carlei, "Romeo and Juliet" stars Douglas Booth and Hailee Steinfeld as the eponymous lovelorn sweethearts. Steinfeld has been carefully selecting the right big-screen follow-up to her Oscar-nominated performance in the Coen Brothers' 2010 take on "True Grit." Her Juliet will be lorded over by "Homeland"'s Damian Lewis as the patriarch of the Capulets, and Paul Giamatti, Stellan Skarsgard and Ed Westwick will also star. A UK release is slated for July 26, but no word yet on Us distribution. Watch the trailer below. »

Because every generation apparently gets its shot at Shakespeare's ultimate love story, a brand-new Romeo and Juliet is headed to theaters, with Douglas Booth and Hailee Steinfeld as the titular young lovers. If you don't know the story - first of all, where on earth did you go to school? - Romeo and Juliet fall deeply in love, but alas, their families, the squabbling Montagues and Capulets (which include Damian Lewis and Ed Westwick), are in the midst of a generations-long fight. Though they enlist the help of an understanding priest (Paul Giamatti), the lovebirds end up with a tragic fate. Don't hate me for saying this about the most classic love story of all time, but this looks like a snooze-fest. We've seen this story before, and except for the addition of Westwick, this looks like the same-old same-old. Am I wrong? The movie doesn't yet have a Us release date, »
