Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters Sign New Three-Year Overall Deal with ABC

5 June 2017 10:01 AM, PDT | Women and Hollywood | See recent Women and Hollywood news »

Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas: WithAnAccentTV/YouTube

Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters have extended their overall deal with ABC. The showrunners of the dearly departed “Agent Carter” have signed a new three-year contract with the studio, Deadline reports. The new pact will see Fazekas and Butters serving as exec producers and showrunners on “The Gospel of Kevin,” a dramedy set to premiere this fall. The partners will also “continue to develop new projects through their Fazekas & Butters production company” under the deal.

“Working with ABC Studios is sort of like working with people who are fans — they’re creative and smart and funny and almost always support our weird ideas,” Fazekas and Butters said in a statement. “They’re great partners, and we’re happy to make our home here.”

Fazekas and Butters have worked with ABC for four years now. Along with the feminist-minded Marvel series “Agent Carter,” the two “have sold a number of projects to broadcast, cable, and streaming” including “Gospel of Kevin” and “The Death of Eva Sofia Valdez,” a revenge drama written by Charise Castro Smith. They also were the EPs and showrunners of “Resurrection,” a drama centered on people returning from the dead and their shocked loved ones. The series ran for two seasons. Fazekas and Butters introduced their production company “as a full-fledged, writer-friendly pod based at ABC Studios” in 2015.

Before beginning their professional relationship with ABC, the duo created the cult CW series “Reaper,” a comedy about a young man who literally does the devil’s bidding. “Law & Order: Svu,” “Hawaii Five-0,” “Terra Nova,” and “Dollhouse” are among Fazekas and Butters’ other credits.

Japanese audiences praise Ghost in the Shell remake and are happy with Scarlett Johansson’s casting

10 April 2017 4:18 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Rupert Sanders’ controversial (in some circles) adaptation of Ghost in the Shell has received its fair share of good reviews in the West [read our review here], despite the ‘white-washing’ claims hanging over it. However, it hasn’t connected with audiences domestically. Its opening weekend of $19 million was very disappointing considering its $110 million budget, and the audience dropped 60% in week two. Ghost in the Shell is doing better internationally ($92 million at the time of writing), and the film has now opened in its original home country of Japan where its being received very favourably.

Yahoo! Movies Japan rated the movie 3.5, praising the film’s visuals but not so much its story. The Hollywood Reporter spoke to some Japanese audience members who echoed that statement.

“I spent a tiny amount of time doing pre-production work for the new Ghost in the Shell,” said Simpson. “These were done back in 2013? 2014? When Margot Robbie was gonna be the lead. Only spent a few days on it, but it was fun.”

Black Lightning Adds Christine Adams As Lynn Stewart

12 March 2017 12:24 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

The CW’s small-screen take on DC Comics superhero Black Lightning has cast British actress Christine Adams in the final lead role of the series, Lynn Stewart. She’ll be joining Cress Williams as the former titular crime-fighter, as well as Nafessa Williams and China Anne McLain as his daughters, Anissa and Jennifer – who will most likely suit up as Thunder and Lightning at some point as the show progresses.

In the comics, Lynn is Jefferson’s ex-wife, though the two maintain a good relationship. It’s not clear if that’ll carry over to the series or not, but we do know this version of the character is described as a woman “who exudes confidence and intelligence. Although she’s got a mischievous side, she’s not one to be trifled with when it comes to family.”

Adams is no stranger to the comic book/sci-fi genre, having appeared »

Newswire: Stephen Lang joins Peter Jackson’s Ya adaptation Mortal Engines

7 March 2017 1:05 PM, PST | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

The key to any good franchise targeted at young people is finding appropriately cool or inoffensive young people to star in it. The Hunger Games nailed this, making Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Hemsworth’s brother, and the other guy into household names, and it looks like Peter Jackson’s Ya-skewing Mortal Engines movie might do the same for an up-and-coming young star named Stephen Lang—who previously appeared as the grizzled military guy in Avatar, the blind and grizzled military guy in Don’t Breathe, and the grizzled military guy in Terra Nova.

This comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which doesn’t say who Lang will be playing, but based on his résumé it seems safe to surmise that he’ll be someone who is either grizzled or in the military. Jackson’s Mortal Engines is based on Philip Reeve’s book series, and it’s about a steampunk-ish future world »
