When Mrs. Grissom asks Sara about Julia Holden, the interpreter says "Julia" right before she fingerspells "Julia". She does not sign her name sign either, and since this is the first time Julia is mentioned, there is no way the interpreter could have known whom she would be talking about. See more »

Murder In The Silent World
12 January 2012 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

This story centers around deaf people and features Jorja Fox ("Sara Sidle") more than the other CSI members. Last week it was "Greg Sanders," this week "Sara." "Sara" is attending the annual grant awards presentation in the deaf community and runs into "Mrs. Grissom" ("Gil Grissom's mother, played by Phyllis Frelich) whose never been too warm to her new daughter-in-law, complaining that Sara and her son aren't together enough. Gil is off in Peru at the moment.

Anyway, it's disclosed shortly that this other woman, an attractive 40-ish lady "Professor Julia Holden" (Marlee Matlin) also had a past relationship with Gil, which Sara knew nothing about. So, there is some tension here, all delivered in sign language and with an interpreter nearby.

The interpreter is a busy man not only at the party but at the police headquarters because as evening was coming to a close, a big explosion is "heard" and man is burned alive in his automobile.

Suspects abound, and CSI has a good case against several of them. It's hard to figure out.

The episode overall, is just "fair" but it gives good insight into the world of deaf people and sign language.
