I used to look at IMDb regularly and base whether or not I went to a movie on the reviews. With this currently rated so low, I would have normally stayed away, but thankfully I found Roger Ebert's review, which was wonderfully objective. Is this movie perfect? No. Is it fun? Yes. Will you laugh? Probably. I've read several comments included in reviews on here about the side story lines, how little body fat there is on the actors (Really?! Maybe showing fit people is a really good idea.), and a few other things. My basic answer is, so what? Enjoy the movie for what it is. It's a brief look at the life of a two very chaotic and dysfunctional families. Sometimes that's how life works. It may not be your life, but it may be close to someone else's. There are times when the dialogue is so over the top, it was obviously to achieve a certain comedic or dramatic moment, and I'm OK with that. One of the important aspects to me is that in this day and age of movies that portray the worst of society, this portrays the successful black families. The characters were very believable for me. In several instances, I could have sworn I met them at some point in my life. The main characters are certainly the core of the movie. Sabrina and Jason are the young couple whose wedding is affected by the vastly different backgrounds they come from. The mothers are given a very powerful place in the film, with their actions affecting everyone else, as they should. The dynamics are interesting to watch at first, but by the end of the movie, it's very easy to see how and why people are the way they are. Some of the climaxes in the movie are easy to spot, others not so much. In the end, this was a very enjoyable movie, and definitely worth seeing. I almost never choose a romantic comedy as my first choice, but this was such a well rounded movie, even I found it very enjoyable (as a guy) to go to. It wasn't sappy, it wasn't cheesy, it was just plain fun.

These type of African-American comedy movies that make their way to the market are among the few. Jumping the broom is a type of movie that avoids many of the typical and overused stuff of the genre yet provoke a fair degree of an enjoyable experience. It's not a perfect movie but hey, c'Mon who needs that tension, we are going for fun. The movie has enough entertaining and funny moments that will provide satisfaction to your movie watching experience thanks to the award-winning cast for their great performances.
This takes us to the movie theme and plot. In a simple style and scale the director Salim Akil presents a family and culture clashing comedy that is well filmed with progressive shots with a bright tinch of melodrama. As in many romantic movies, the story is about two lovebirds, but here the story is all about class and status. The film features two love-birds Sabrina Watson (Paula Patton) and Jason Taylor (Laz Alonso) planning to marry each other. However the main setup of the film is that these two love each other but their families don't.
Apart from the storyline the film works only because the script is a juggling stuff with a dozen of jokes and gags. Another coup for the film is it's amusing supporting characters which prevents a hard collision and bloodbath when these two entirely different families meet each other. This film also has other shining moments such as it's elegant wedding feel and well coordinated cinematography. The casting is well chosen and diverse. Overall, by most standards it's not enough for a movie to be a hit but will attract the audience as a funny and an interesting flick.

both families don't get along. The movie was OK but nothing original. Sabrina and Jason are getting married in swanky Martha's Vineyard, and they are about to meet each other's families for the first time. Sabrina's family is rich and throwing the wedding of the year. Jason's mom, Mrs. Taylor, is a tough talking postal worker, whom brings her friend, his uncle and his cousin to the wedding. Needless to say, their lifestyle is completely different from the Watson's. From the beginning, Mrs. Taylor is at odds with Sabrina and her mom and flies off the handle at the littlest of things. She finds it offensive they want her recipes, they sent a driver to pick them up, Sabrina wants her to wear a dress she bought, they don't want to jump the broom, etc... pretty much everything. And Sabrina's mom doesn't think Mrs. Taylor is sophisticated enough. The two families arguing soon leads to Sabrina and Jason arguing. Then Mrs. Taylor over hears a family secret and just has to tell the hurtful secret to Sabrina. But will they still get married?

I am glad Hollywood finally almost got it right with black love. My almost opinion comes from: the lady of interest. Don't get me wrong, Paula Patton is a dream; and, even I wish I had her: skin, body shape, features, hair, etc. However, had the star lady of this movie been: Marion Ramsey or an actress similar to the character of Cadet Laverne Hooks, then I would had been able to relate this movie to my life. Men are clueless; and, when Laz Alonzo finally realized how his mother felt about his impending wedding, Jumping the Broom revealed that myth to be true. Inspite of Marion Ramsey not being cast as the leading female star of Jumping The Broom's movie, I cried throughout the entire show. Every girl wants to believe in the possibility of meeting that guy who will shine the sun on our blissful future; but, in reality that does not happen for every female. My point I am trying to express is, if I had been the woman Laz Alonzo feel head of heels for, then I would possess a glimmer of hope that I would not die alone.

I remember loving this movie in its entirety when it first came out - mainly out of bias of my love for Paula and Laz. However, I just watched this movie again and, while I still absolutely love Paula and Laz, I realize this movie has a lot of imperfections. I understand that the writers probably felt a need to make a simple rom-com multifaceted, but Meagan Good's and dude's sideline storyline was unnecessary and added absolutely nothing to the story. Deray's storyline could've been excluded as well. Not to mention, his character was pretty annoying. I didn't necessarily appreciate the wedding planner's racially-tinged jokes - not because they were racially/culturally-charged, but just the fact that they were simply not funny. As for the acting, it was wince-worthy then, and it's wince-worthy now. That especially goes for Paula Patton, although I hate to admit it. Angela Bassett's and Mike Epps' acting, however, provided some relief. We all know you honestly can't expect much from a family-clash-at-wedding rom-com, so this one is pretty standard. The only items that really add shallow dings to the movie would be the acting and the unnecessary extra elements/storylines added. Other than that, it's a decent, feel-good movie that's worth a watch at least once.
Tries too hard to be all things to all people.

Entertaining but a little confusing to me. This is another movie done by TD Jakes and for a movie with religious undertones (although not overdone) there is a lot of sex talk, sexual innuendo, short tight skirts and cameras that do a lot of panning down womens bodies, not to mention the obligatory shirtless men playing football on the beach which almost seemed to be a throw in shot for the ladies. Not that I minded but I'm not sure just what this movie wants to be. Is it a romantic comedy, a morality tale, a commentary of classes in the black community? It almost like its trying to touch on too many issues in a little under 2 hours and then when its touched on everything from class war, skin color, religion, bankruptcy, surrogate parenting, younger man, older women relationships, jealousy of the success of others within the black community it just wraps everything up in a neat little bow and suddenly years of building problems magically go away in 10 minutes. I kept waiting for someone to say that it was going to take years to deal with some of these issues.
Also some of the characters the movie really could have done without. The Blythe character (Meagan Good) is little more than eye candy and her tryst with the chef was totally unnecessary and added nothing to the movie, the issues between the groom and his cousin are alluded to and then solved with a predictable punch to the jaw and then never mentioned again, the wooing of Shonda (Tasha Smith) by Sebastion (Romeo) was just plain creepy and unconvincing.
On the positive side the excellent performances by Brian Stokes Mitchell and Angela Bassett save this movie from total cliché. Frankly I found their relationship the most interesting in the movie, no doubt due to the professionalism of these two veteran actors. Paula Patton and Laz Alonso are OK as the two young lovers about to be married but I had a hard time buying Sabrina's (Patton) quick change from a series of apparent one night stands to making celibacy pacts with God. Loretta Devine (Mrs Taylor) brings her usual solid performance to her role and slips easily from comedy to seriousness. She is made for this type of role as the over possessive mother of the groom. Mike Epps as the grooms uncle is his usually wise cracking self although he actually gets to act a little bit in this movie. Most of us know an Uncle like him.
By the way is there an ounce of fat ANYWHERE in this movie. I thought America had an obesity problem. You wouldn't know it by looking at this film. Everybody except Mrs Taylor looks like they stepped of the cover a a magazine. Even among the middle aged 50 somethings there isn't hardly a receding hairline or pot belly to be found. Its one of those alternate universes that only exists in the movies and TV.
TD Jakes makes his usual cameo as the wisdom dispensing minister and later performs the wedding of course. I just hope he doesn't try so hard to woo the non faithful that he totally forgets who his core audience is.

I live in Vegas and I'm originally from Europe. It's very hard to get good movies to see here. but they do come once in a while. So after reading the review, I was looking forward to seeing something new. Fresh air in the torrid Mohave Desert, a half-comedy (satirical i thought) among African-Americans from different socio-economic backgrounds. Sounded great! OMG, nothing had me prepared for this! The setting was stunning and most of the acting list were gorgeous looking. Unfortunately, what they had in looks they lacked in acting quality. The plot is superficial and artificial. Clichés and stereotypes abound. Jokes are not even funny. Sex jokes run throughout the movie. The French lines were bizarre to say the least. If one from the upper classes, does one have to speak French? In America? Mais pas du tout! African-American cinema this? No, certainly not. Not even cinema, this a matinée for adolescent girls.

This movies deserves a much better rating than it has here. It came on after something else I was watching and it sucked me right in, even though I'm not generally a fan of romantic comedies. It has the perfectly matched Angela Bassett and Brian Mitchell Stokes (who are always worth watching) as the wealthy parents of the bride, Sabrina, and Loretta Devine (who is out to sabotage the entire endeavor) as the working class mother of the groom, Jason. It also has some deep, dark secrets, a runaway bride and enough interesting side characters to keep the whole thing spinning. Set against the backdrop of a gorgeous Martha's Vineyard, all in all, it's a pretty enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours. I give it a 7 because it is what it sets out to be: a sweet little romantic comedy.

When I read the description of this film and saw that Angela Basset and Loretta Devine where in it, I thought ok same old story but it must be fun to watch. Clearly, I was wrong.
The level of cringe in this movie is so high, it was almost painful to watch. Very unlikable characters, high shool level of writing, surprisingly bad acting, and a story that is no story. It feels more like a series of almost non related events put together as one. The only interesting thing about this movie, was that I learned about some traditions at black weddings. Being european, I had no knowledge about them. Other than that, a waste of time.

It was a great movie. The writing and acting were exceptional. I'll give credit where credit is due. I've already seen it twice.
It was not a Ghetto movie as some call it. It's nice to see blacks portrayed in a more positive light. I thought the entire setting from Brooklyn to Martha's Vineyard was interesting. I liked the whole transition. The social classes was typical. I can go on and on about what I loved about this movie but I would rather let people go see it for themselves. They'll be pleasantly surprised.
It's not a "BLACK" movie. I never say, I'm going to see a "White movie or a black movie.
I've read quite a few disparaging and very bias comments. I hate all the labels and brands on this board. It's appalling and so unfair. You actually have to go and see the movie first before you critique it. Stop listening to the media's perception of other races.

I actually loved this movie. Maybe it was the cold weather after work or the music in the movie, but it appealed to me. The cast with Angela Bassett and some gorgeous looking individuals added to the charm of the movie. I must agree that the French speaking was one of the most bizarre i ever heard being french speaking from Cameroon. i could hardly make up what was being said and it sounded as if it was added in the editing phase. Anyway... The story is also a light one but reel. It depicts the mother who will never finds any woman good enough to be her daughter-in-law, the super-protective mother who does not want her child to grow. it also showcases the difference in behaviour, likings... between 2 different socio economical classes of individuals. in between there are a lot of family secrets that get revealed. That is great and presented in crescendo. One is always bent towards finding out what is exactly going on. The music chosen in the movie is just great, and would bring to romance any person you are courting. And of course, weddings are always emotional for me, and T.D Jakes adds realism to the act. All in one, if you have to seduce someone after trying for some time without success, try this movie, it might just work out.

Oh my gosh the acting in this is just TERRIBLE!!! Sabrina, Sabastian, Sabrina's dad (and his assistant), the groomsmen and the bridesmaids. Basically everyone except Angela Basset could be out-acted by the kids at the local high school. It makes me sick to read that people think the low rating is due to people being "racist". That is absurd. The fact is, the movie has some of the worst acting I've ever seen. Worse than most made-for-TV movies. I wanted to like it b/c I completely understand the whole premise (a couple getting married and they can't get along with their in-laws)as I lived it years ago. But the script was tired and has been done over and over and over again. The characters were cliché'd and some things I just didn't find believable. This movie just wasn't good. Sorry.

I rented this movie without expecting much but a few chuckles, what received instead was a new favorite movie and a very pleasant surprise! "Jumping the Broom" is a fantastic movie that is fun, powerfully emotional, and genuine. One walks away from the movie with a new and improved good mood! The characters are incredibly easy to relate with on all levels. They are well rounded, but not too complex. It was quite entertaining to follow the different love connections throughout the movie. There is definitely something for each person to take away from the movie and I highly recommend it to every person, everywhere! I did not want this movie to end and will be re-watching many, many more times!! two big thumbs up!!
A Pleasant Ensemble Mix of Comedy & Drama

"Jumping The Broom" has a daunting task: tell a believable, funny story about a wedding while weaving in six different subplots involving a large ensemble cast. I was pleasantly surprised how well director Salim Akil pulled it off. Is "JTB" believable? For the most part, yes. (However, the film's big secret is one I don't believe could have remained secret for so long). Is "JTB" funny? YES! I give Mike Epps and Loretta Devine kudos for not overacting and still delivering great comic moments. And thank you to the screenwriters for NOT filling a Black film with lots of slapstick. I was impressed how 14 actors/actresses received their fair share of screen time. (Though a little of Romeo's acting goes a long way.) And I must add that this is a good-looking cast! Angela Bassett (sigh!) leads a list of beautiful ladies. Laz Alonzo, Romeo and Gary Dourdan provide lots of muscles and six-pack abs (yes, I was a little jealous). And for those concerned that this movie is 'religious' because T.D. Jakes helped produce it--don't worry. The only overt Christianity in the movie involves a promise that Sabrina (Paula Patton) makes to God. While "JTB" risks going into soap opera mode a few times, the characters talked and behaved (for better or worse) like real people. Watch for a powerful scene with Mr. and Mrs. Watson that needs no dialogue. While the overall arc of the film might not surprise you, how the script gets there is a pleasant journey. So when it comes to recommending "Jumping The Broom", I happily answer: "I do."

This is a delightful surprising film that is rare in today's slap stick film market of black comedy. The cast is talented and engaging and the script is original. There were awkward moments at times of high drama, yet they are indicative of intense African American culture. This is a must see for film enthusiasts and fans of the leading cast members! I never felt like I'd "seen this one before" while enjoying this movie. I greatly anticipated its arrival, and it exceeded my expectations. The romance was enticing and the characters very colorful. This is one of the first films to showcase the other side of African American life that is often overlooked and still give an honest look at generational progress. I'm looking forward to Bob's Johnson's future as an Our Stories Film trend setter.

it happens once in a while, a group of like-minded people who needed an editor get together and swoon over each other's lines, shots, you name it; starts off from a very shaky footing, i,e, lets do the vineyard, the yacht, we break into french, we are fabulously wealthy on and on and on, except like the wiz and ease on down the road we'll make everyone black instead of white; it gets worse with stilted dialog trying to find some meat on the bones of the non=starting plot; how many times can you here the son tell his mother that he loves her, respects her, honors her, reveres her (zzzzz) except she is threatened by the riches and yachts and breaking into french and starts wrecking things; the other part of this is how ridiculous it is for IMDb to ins is on 10 lines of copy; the plot isnn't worth it and has been covered already, and when a movie is this bad you really don't need line after line telling you why

"Jumping The Broom" is one of this year's latest romantic comedies. The movie revolves around a gorgeous, young couple played by Laz Alonso ("Stomp The Yard") and Paula Patton ( "Idlewild") who are planning on getting married. The couple remain in pre marital bliss until they bring their respective families together. Both families, one wealthy, the other working class meet for the first time at Martha's Vineyard which is where most of the drama and romantic interludes unfold. The movie consist of an all star cast which includes Loretta Devine as the meddlesome, overbearing, protective mother, Mike Epps as the funny uncle, Angela Bassett, as the beougie, materialistic mother of the bride, along with Tasha Smith (" Why Did I Get Married"?)and Valerie Pettiford (" Half &Half"). Overall, the film does have its entertaining moments. However, like most family/ romantic dramas, the plot is somewhat trite, i.e, hidden family secrets revealed, meddling soon-to be in laws, following family traditions and customs as well as deep rooted issues that test the strength and bond between the two main characters. Its great to see a movie that focuses on family unity and true love along with unfortunate circumstances that can tear a family apart, but still manage to bring them closer together. While there are some nice touches to the film, the ending is rather predictable and could've had a little more surprise to it. I give this movie a 7 out of 10.

I would still have given this movie a sub-par rating, but that is because it is a chick-flick, aka rom-com. I used to be able to stomach those, but that was way back in the When Harry Met Sally days. Now, they are still telling the same joke, so I am clearly not their target demographic. However, I did get suckered into watching this movie, but my problem with it comes at the crux of the plot twist when she finds out that she is adopted. I think the writers forgot that some people actually ARE adopted, and don't find it so life-altering and earth-shattering. She she didn't seem to have been adopted by a struggling family, and was still near her biological mother, just didn't know it. As an adopted man, my feeling is for her to just get the eff over it. No, do not ruin a wedding, and cuss out the man who RAISED you, but perhaps deal with that ... tomorrow. Or after the honeymoon. I, however, have always known I was adopted, and was not surprised with that information on my wedding day, but I do not feel in any way, shape, nor form that such information should be able to carry a movie. This movie already sucked two hours of my life away like some sort of succubus. I will never watch it again, and when flipping past it on TV, I can't possibly change the channel fast enough.

Really enjoyed this movie - BEAUTIFUL cast & scenery of Martha's Vineyard. Yes, predictable but very entertaining. I especially LOVED seeing so many GORGEOUS, fit African American actors & actresses. Lots of eye candy! Highly recommend!

I thought this was going to be another one of those boring date movies that I must see to make my girl feel good. But, it turned out to be rather good. The story flowed well with good acting by Angela Bassett and the cast did a good job as well. With a nice mixture of drama,comedy and even a few twists. Enjoy the movie for yourself. I can never understand what other critics are actually looking for when they preview a movie. As long as I can feel the characters and not worry about when the credits will role then it is a decent movie. I must say it is nothing worthy of an Oscar nomination but its definitely worth the price of admission.

This movie was much better than I thought, although it had it issues. Among them Characters were not really developed, introductions were awkward and too many additional story lines that had nothing to do with the story itself. Pooch Hall he just showed up in Martha's Vineyard, technically the cousin (DeRay Davis) could have just been there. The entire chef scene with (Dourdan / Good) could have been left out. I'm not too sure what was the point in any of their scenes. Another distraction was (Rameo and Tasha). The whole cougar situation didn't work at all, and in the end...(I won't give away what happens), but I just have to say our entire audience in the movie revealed their distaste for that final scene. Lastly the cameo's from TD Jakes were bizarre. He seemed to be lifeless and such poor acting! Wow, what a distraction. There were other great things about the movie (Bassett) was great and the entire situation between she and her husband worked, but not developed enough. The rift between sisters was also underdeveloped. And why the groom's mother (Devine) was so angry and mean another problem. I didn't like her at all in that role and she looked beet down and haggard. Mike Epps is the movies saving grace. He was very funny. I saw him in Richmond VA and wasn't very fond of his style, but after watching the movie I have to say I'm a fan.
Another promising disappointment

I really wanted to like this movie, as its premise had promise. Two young, attractive, successful African Americans from differing socio-economic backgrounds come together, but because of these markedly different backgrounds, misunderstandings arise. This in itself was enough to build the movie on, class warfare, social climbing, the difficulties of dating in the Black community, but all of these very relevant issues get thrown under the bus in favor of totally implausible melodrama. Where there was real room for exploration about how African Americans discriminate between the haves and have nots, white collar versus blue collar, the movie is hijacked by a plot line so completely hard to believe, and frankly, stupid, that there is no coming back to anything sensible. That the movie then gets all tied up in a neat little bow after all is said and done is just a further insult to one's intelligence. I am sorry to say it, but run away from this movie.
