Bishop Td Jakes Marks 20 Years of Heavenly Content

Bishop Td Jakes Marks 20 Years of Heavenly Content
T.D. Jakes is a man with friends in high places. So high, in fact, that President Obama told Variety, “I am fortunate to count myself among the countless Americans whose lives have been touched by the ministry of Bishop T.D. Jakes.” The president said Jakes has made us “better as individuals” and “more compassionate, and more loving as a country.”

It is those kind of key relationships with the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry, Will Smith and Kerry Washington that have turned this preacher from Dallas into a $400 billion media juggernaut. When he isn’t wearing his “bishop” hat, Jakes makes time to serve in a completely separate capacity as CEO of Tdj Enterprises, a for-profit company in its 20th year. “Our company has actually existed longer than the Potter’s House (his church),” Jakes says. “Before I was nationally known, I was leading an enterprise.”

Loretta Devine adds her spark to The Carmichael Show

From her Broadway turn in Dreamgirls and starring roles in films like Waiting to Exhale and Jumping the Broom to TV’s Grey’s Anatomy, Loretta Devine has the thespian trifecta when it comes to a diversified resumé. The delightfully humble Devine returns to TV in comedian Jerrod Carmichael’s new multicam sitcom The Carmichael Show (beginning Wednesday, Aug. 26 at 9pm on NBC). The laugh-out-loud series is a modern-day All in the Family of sorts that follows the Carmichael family’s zany dynamics. Carmichael plays Jerrod, who’s hiding from his contrarian father (David Alan Grier) and Bible-obsessed mother (Devine) that his girlfriend Maxine … Continue reading →

Blackbird | Review

The Boys in the Choir: Polk’s Antiquated Rendition of the Rural Gay Narrative

The blatant underrepresentation of black gay characters in film, whatever letter they’re placed into on the inclusive Lgbt spectrum, is simply not reason enough to appreciate the elemental contrivances of Patrik-Ian Polk’s Blackbird, an independent film rife with cliché in its euphemistic depiction of the rural queer experience that does little to elevate the film’s archaic nature.

The title has been inadvertently thrown into a higher caliber pop culture zeitgeist thanks to its distinction as Mo’Nique’s first post-Oscar role since her 2009 win for Best Supporting Actress in Precious. The significant media coverage concerning potential fallout between herself and director Lee Daniels should enhance the film’s shelf-life beyond the trappings of a niche market. Produced by the actress and her agent/husband Sidney Hicks, the project feels very much like the
