The fifth and final season
4 October 2015 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

When 'Brothers & Sisters' returned for its fifth and final year, it received an 18 episode order from ABC. But the network would increase that amount by four, taking it up to 22 episodes during the last season on air, and this is the second one of those. There was still plenty of great stuff in these later episodes, but often the plots do not fully engage the viewer or sustain long-term interest like the show had done so well in the earlier years.

The main problem involved Rob Lowe leaving, which can be considered a jump-the-shark moment. In the prior episode, his character was still alive, so it did not seem like he was gone (we were in denial like Kitty). But now that he is officially out of the way, there's a huge void. And the writers quickly added a new love interest for her in the next episode, which did not work out. Lowe anchored the series with his presence, and he was a big name star. A replacement, any replacement, would fall short.

In the meantime, the writers were trying to build up granddaughter Paige, making her a trouble-prone young adolescent. That was interesting, but again it sort of fell short. The writers would background Paige after this and focus more on Sarah's upcoming marriage with Luc.

Meanwhile, Kevin and Scotty's relationship would continue to evolve. But at this point, the writers are saddling them with a teen, which seems strange. The teen is quickly dropped, and the guys will end up raising two younger children by the time the series concludes.
