'Never Here': Film Review | Oldenburg 2017

19 September 2017 4:31 AM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Performance artist, documentarian and editor Camille Thoman has assembled an impressive range of talents for her narrative feature debut, an atmospheric indie psycho-thriller with shades of Lynch and Hitchcock. The Killing star Mireille Enos plays the lead, Sam Shepard makes his final screen appearance and Zachary Quinto has a credit as exec producer. Vexing, disquieting, willfully opaque in places, Never Here had its European premiere at Oldenburg International Film Festival last week. Vertical Entertainment is planning a limited U.S. release Oct. 20, with a pay TV launch to follow on Starz in early 2018.

Writers Guild of America West members have given screenwriter John August the most votes for a two-year board seat and re-elected incumbents Andrea Berloff, Luvh Rakhe, Meredith Stiehm, and Zak Penn.

Nicole Yorkin, Angelina Burnett, and Michele Mulroney were also elected to board seats and incumbent secretary-treasurer Aaron Mendelsohn easily won re-election.

Results were released Monday night. David A. Goodman officially became the new WGA West president after running unopposed, succeeding Howard Rodman, who opted not to seek re-election. Goodman had been selected by the guild’s nominating committee as a candidate to succeed Rodman and was unopposed, as another unnamed candidate selected by the nominating committee declined to run.

Agnieszka Holland & Kasia Adamik to Direct Netflix’s First Original Polish-Language Series

Holland: telewizjaKinoPolska/ YouTube

It’s been quite a week for Agnieszka Holland and Kasia Adamik. Just days ago Poland announced their collaboration “Spoor” as the country’s pick in the foreign-language Oscar race, and now comes word that the two directors are re-teaming for Netflix’s first original series in the Polish language. A press release revealed that the pair will direct the debut eight-episode season of an as-yet untitled alternative history series.

According to the streaming giant’s official synopsis, the series “takes place in a world where the Iron Curtain never fell. Now, in 2002, 20 years after a devastating terrorist attack in 1982 that halted the course of Poland’s liberation and the subsequent downfall of the Soviet Union, an idealistic law student and a disgraced police investigator stumble upon a conspiracy that has kept the Iron Curtain standing and Poland living under a repressive police state. After two decades of peace and prosperity, the leaders of the regime enact a secret plan that was made with an unlikely adversary in the 1980s that will radically transform Poland and affect the lives of every citizen in the nation — and the world. What these two men discover has the potential to ignite a popular revolution and those in power will stop at nothing to keep it a secret.”

“We are really happy that we’ll be able to combine the wonderful experience of the Netflix team, our great American producers and writer, with Polish talent and a Polish sensibility,” Holland commented.

The new series will shoot in Poland and is expected to launch on Netflix in 2018.

In Darkness” and “Europa, Europa” are among Holland’s previous feature credits. She received an Oscar nomination for writing the latter, and scored an Emmy nod in 2010 for directing an episode of “Treme.” She’s also helmed episodes of series such as “House of Cards,” “The Killing,” and “The Wire.”

Adamik, who served as collaborating director on “Spoor,” made her feature debut with this year’s crime thriller “Amok.” She’s helmed episodes of “The Border” and “Without Secret.”

“Moonlight” premiered at the Telluride Film Festival exactly one year ago, followed by a bow in Toronto before making history by winning Best Picture in one of the most exciting Academy Awards ceremonies of all time. Patty Jenkins to Direct New TNT Drama “One Day She’ll Darken”

27 July 2017 10:01 AM, PDT | Women and Hollywood | See recent Women and Hollywood news »

Patty Jenkins on “Late Night with Seth Meyers

Patty Jenkins’ is following up “Wonder Woman” with a return to the small screen. The herstory-making director will helm the pilot of “One Day She’ll Darken,” a six episode limited drama from TNT, Deadline reports. The “Monster” writer-director is only locked down for the pilot, but she’ll potentially take on additional eps, according to the source. The female-led project received a straight-to-series order.

Inspired by a true story, “One Day She’ll Darken” centers on “Fauna Hodel, who was given away by her teenage birth mother to a black restroom attendant in a Nevada casino in 1949,” Deadline writes. In an effort to uncover the secrets surrounding her past, “she follows a sinister trail that swirls ever closer to an infamous Hollywood gynecologist, Dr. George Hodel, a man involved in the darkest Hollywood debauchery and a suspect in the infamous ‘Black Dahlia’ murder of Elizabeth Short in Los Angeles in 1947.”

No word on who will portray Fauna, but the show will reunite Jenkins with “Wonder Woman” star Chris Pine, who plays a supporting role.

Jenkins’ husband, author Sam Sheridan (“A Fighters’s Heart”), penned the series.

Arrested Development,” “Entourage,” and “The Killing,” are among Jenkins’ previous TV directing credits. She’s one of the executive producers on “One Day She’ll Darken.”

Patty Jenkins is a phenomenally talented director who has always delivered powerful characters, from the unforgettable true-life serial killer in ‘Monster’ to the game-changing superhero warrior in ‘Wonder Woman,’” said Sarah Aubrey, Evp of original programming for TNT. “‘One Day She’ll Darken’ is a mind-boggling true mystery with unpredictable twists and turns and edge-of-your-seat chills. Sam Sheridan, an expert storyteller, has delivered scripts that entertain, frighten, and tell tales of redemption and a powerful search for identity.”

Wonder Woman” is the highest-grossing film of the summer, the second highest-grossing film of the year behind “Beauty and the Beast,” and the top-grossing women-directed live-action film ever. A sequel for the Gal Gadot-starrer has been confirmed and is slated for release December 13, 2019, but Jenkins still isn’t attached to helm.

Snowfall Season 1 Review

Three episodes were provided prior to broadcast.

There’s nothing inherently bad about FX’s new drug drama Snowfall. As an opening sentence to a review, that’s not exactly a good omen, but such middling thoughts couldn’t help but bubble to the surface in the three hours I spent watching the original cocaine empire blossom haphazardly out of the sun-soaked streets of south central Los Angeles. It’s got a good lead, a solid premise, and legitimately gorgeous cinematography that lovingly lingers on the palm tree-lined streets of 1983 La like they’re a fresco in the Sistine Chapel.

No, there’s nothing really bad about Snowfall. It’s just that the network it calls home has raised the bar to such a degree that a show turning out just “good” feels disappointing in comparison. Snowfall has a decent narrative, but it lacks daring; there are a few interesting characters, »

Silver & Black Director Shares Her Connection With Wonder Woman’s Patty Jenkins

20 June 2017 8:40 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Gina Prince-Bythewood and Patty Jenkins have much in common. Both have critically acclaimed, independent movies on their resumes (Love & Basketball, The Secret Life Of Bees and Beyond The Lights in the case of Prince-Bythewood; Monster in the case of Jenkins), both have made their mark in directing television (Shots Fired and Cloak & Dagger; and The Killing, respectively), and both are now blazing an entirely new trail through the genre of comic book movies. Mireille Enos in “The Catch”: Kelsey McNeal/ABC

Vertical Entertainment has snagged the U.S. rights to the Mireille Enos thriller “Never Here,” Deadline reports. The film, which made its world premiere at the Los Angeles Film Festival on June 18, will receive a theatrical release later this year and will air on Starz in 2018.

Written and directed by Camille Thoman (“The Longest Game”), “Never Here” follows Miranda (Enos), an installation artist who is engaging in an affair. When her lover sees a violent crime from Miranda’s apartment, she decides to protect him and report it to the police herself. “Miranda poses as the primary witness, making statements to the police about a crime she did not see, and she begins to create a new piece of work based on these circumstances,” Deadline writes. “It sends Miranda into a maze of doubt and fear, blurring the lines between artist and subject.”

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with Starz and the ‘Never Here’ team to bring this incredibly visceral film to audiences,” Vertical co-president Rich Goldberg commented. “Camille’s distinct vision threads an especially unique story that calls for active participation from every viewer.”

Never Here” also stars Nina Arianda (“Florence Foster Jenkins”), Ana Nogueira (“Vampire Diaries”), Sam Shepard (“Bloodlines”), Goran Visnjic (“Timeless”), Vincent Piazza (“The Intervention”), and Desmin Borges (“You’re the Worst”).

Wonderbar Productions and Before the Door Pictures are producing “Never Here.” Thoman is serving as producer alongside Elizabeth Yng-Wong, Bronwyn Cornelius, Julian Cautherley, Radium Cheung, and Corey Moosa.

Enos starred as Sarah Linden in Veena Sud’s mystery series “The Killing” from 2011 to 2014. The “If I Stay” actress earned a Golden Globe nod for the role. Enos portrayed Alice Vaughan in the Shondaland romantic thriller “The Catch” for two seasons. The ABC show was cancelled earlier this year.
