Thanksgiving
15 May 2011 | by (New York) – See all my reviews

As this chapter begins, we watch Albert doing some painting in a house that is being restored. His son Delmond has come into town and is being interviewed in a radio program. Delmond is frustrated by the way no progress is seen. His latest CD is doing well. As the DJ is about to play one more song, Delmond insists in playing his trumpet on the air as a tribute to his father.

Davis and Annie are sorting through their combined CD collections. They find there is a duplicate album, which Annie wants to give away. Davis insists in keeping both copies. Davis has not invited Annie to his family's Thanksgiving dinner because of a bad experience. She wants to go in the worst way. Davis has not exactly endear himself to the station owner because of his selections. On Thanksgiving morning, Davis plays a bounce music, which his boss does not appreciate so early.

The police are having an early staff meeting about the unruly behavior on Bourbon Street. Lt. Colson lets one of the policemen have it for the way he acted on a case where a young man was seen without clothes. Colson realizes the street is notorious as a party scene and he wants his men to recognize that fact. Later, walking outside with Sgt. Bechet they talk about the incident at the Danzinger Bridge, still unresolved.

Desiree has to go shopping. She asks Antoine to mind the baby. He had other plans and takes the infant all over town where he has gone to socialize. At the school, Desiree meets another teacher, now unemployed because of the system. She lost all her seniority and has to qualify now. Desiree is disgusted. The only good thing Desiree admits is the way parents are now participating in what goes on in school.

Vincent Abreu, a Massachussets man walks into Toni's office. He has come to find out what really happened with his son Joey, who was found dead in the street. Whenever he tried to get an explanation, he does not get it from any of the officers he speaks to. He wants Toni to look into the matter for him. All he really needs is closure, something a logical explanation will do. Toni visits Colson, who promises to check.

Jeanette is not having a good time in Manhattan. Her job sucks. Chef Brulard, a mercurial man, focuses on her and goes to her station where she is preparing a salmon. Brulard becomes rhapsodic about the way to do a fish. He advises her to let the fish speak to her. The table that had ordered the salmon had walked out because of the delay in service. Jeanette has taken a young man to bed. As her alarm sounds, she gets up. The man starts dressing and takes all the money in her wallet.

Nelson, the wheeler dealer from Dallas, goes to talk to the local FEMA representative. He hands over the card from the Liguori group that was given to him. The FEMA man promises to look into it. At the races, he is with C. J. Liguori discussing his big plans. Nelson is a lucky man at the races. Liguori does not gamble, all he asks is for Nelson to send business his way.

Thanksgiving Day is different for the people of New Orleans. Toni and Sofia are seen at a fancy restaurant, but they hardly talk to one another. Lt. Colson has a lonely take out dinner at his office. Albert and his family prepared the deep fry turkey they love. LaDonna and her clan are celebrating, even though it might be the last time in that house.

Tim Robbins directed this episode that was written by David Simon, the co-creator of the series. It is a chapter full of incidents. Unresolved cases, as well as corruption by unscrupulous people, as well as politics, loom in the background. Mr. Robbins gets good performances all around.
