As we approach the end of 2012, the folks over at TorrentFreak have put together their annual lists of the most pirated movies and TV shows from the past twelve months, which is based upon the number of illegal downloads from various torrent sites.

Despite the inclusion of box office behemoths such as The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises, the found footage comedy Project X was the most pirated movie of the year with an estimated 8,720,000 (and also the lowest-grossing release to feature in the top ten), while HBO's epic fantasy series Game of Thrones overtook Dexter to become the most-downloaded TV show of 2012, peaking at 4,280,000 downloads for a single episode.

Here's the ten most downloaded movies of 2012, along with the estimated number of downloads and global box office grosses...

1. Project X - 8,720,000 downloads, $100,931,865 gross

2. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol - 8,500,000 downloads, $694,713,380 gross

3. The Dark Knight Rises - 8,230,000 downloads, $1,081,041,287 gross

And The Award For The Most Pirated Film Of 2012 Goes To…

31 December 2012 5:00 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

As one year ends and another begins, it’s always good to have a look back over the past 12 months…and review which films were the most pirated of 2012! Although you may think that some of the big hitters (e.g. The Dark Knight Rises/Avengers Assemble) would top the poll, you would be wrong. Research shows that little known, under-the-radar comedy Project X was the most illegally downloaded film of the year, coming in with 8.72 million torrents.

The out-of-control-party-based film, directed by Nima Nourizadeh, may not have made an impact over here in the UK, but made a worldwide box office total of $100 million. Yes, there were films that made a hell of a lot more, but if a film isn’t widely released, it can become a victim of Internet pirates.

Settling into second place is Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, while following behind in third is The Dark Knight Rises »

Beautiful Creatures will be one of the first films planting its flag in the ground to step in to the gap left open in the market with the conclusion of The Twilight Saga.

Warner Bros. potentially have a very successful new franchise on their hands, and have been teasing us with some pretty impressive things over the past few months, most notably with the latest trailer a few weeks back.

With its Valentine’s weekend release date fast approaching, the studio have given us the first TV spot, teasing yet more romance, drama, and epic sorcery from the upcoming blockbuster.

“A supernatural love story set in the South, “Beautiful Creatures” tells the tale of two star-crossed lovers: Ethan (Alden Ehrenreich), a young man longing to escape his small town, and Lena (Alice Englert), a mysterious new girl. Ebert's always been a fairly mainstream Oscar-Friendly voice so it's no surprise to see three of the (presumed) top six Best Picture nominees at the very top. But it's nice to see lesser discussed titles like End of Watch and Oslo August 31st getting their due.

TorrentFreak have released their annual lists of the most pirated movies and TV shows of 2012, and the winner of the film list is not one you'd expect.

"Project X," the widely panned teen comedy about three nerds who throw a party that spirals out of control, took the top spot on the film list with 8.72 million illegal downloads in 2012.

It just edges out much higher profile action tentpoles like "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol" (8.5m), "The Dark Knight Rises" (8.23m), and "The Avengers" (8.11m).

Also making the list are "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" (7.85m), "21 Jump Street" (7.59m), David Fincher's "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" (7.42m), "The Dictator" (7.33m), "Ice Age: Continental Drift" (6.96m), and "The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn Part 1" (6.74m).

On the TV front, HBO's big-budget fantasy series "Game of Thrones" easily dominated the small screen list with a single episode of this year's second season receiving 4.28 million downloads. »

Phil’s Top 10 Films of 2012

29 December 2012 4:14 AM, PST | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Well here it is. After hinting at some of the films on Twitter and promising that this will be unlike any top ten you see this year, I’ve finally compiled my Top 10 films of 2012. However, I originally compiled my list before seeing Pitch Perfect, which I felt Had to be included in this list; therefore my choices for ninth and tenth film on the list now share tenth place.

I’ve also included a hell of a lot of honorable mentions (enough to take this up to a Top 25 if I had included them all), three of which are short films. Three short films which happen to be the best I’ve seen in years and give some of the feature-length films released this year a run for their money. Consider everything on this list a recommendation of the highest order…

The Most Pirated Movie of 2012 May Surprise You

28 December 2012 12:15 PM, PST | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

Earlier this week, we learned that HBO’s Game of Thrones was the most pirated TV show of 2012 – which makes sense, since it’s a popular program only available to HBO subscribers and not everyone shells out the cash each month for the network. Today, we learned the most pirated movie of the past 12 months – and we bet that it’s not the title you were expecting. While mega-blockbusters like The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises were pirated a staggering number of times, it’s the much-maligned R-rated teen comedy Project X that locked down the title as the most illegally downloaded film of the year, according to TorrentFreak. In some ways, it makes sense that this film topped the list. It’s an R-rated comedy marketed toward teens, many of...

Playback Finishes Dead Last at the Box Office in 2012

The end of calendar year is always the start of the awards season for movie fans, with critics' top 10 lists rolling out and award nominations being handed out. However, there are a few distinct honors that no film wants to receive. Today, Project X was named as the most downloaded movie of 2012, while the Christian Slater flop Playback was named the lowest grossing movie of the year, earning just $264 at the box office. Yes, just two hundred sixty-four dollars.

Playback was released in just one theater back in March, earning a paltry $252, adding another $12 the following week for a total domestic tally of $264. Oddly enough, though, The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure fared even worse, in terms of per-screen average. Opening in 2,160 theaters this August, The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure earned an abysmal $443,901, for a per-screen average of $206. In case both Playback and The Oogieloves in the »

The most pirated movie of 2012 is ... 'Project X'?

28 December 2012 10:14 AM, PST | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

It wasn't much of a surprise to learn that "Game of Thrones" was the most pirated TV show of 2012. The top movie on the list, though? Probably not what you'd expect.

That, uh, honor belongs not to "The Avengers" or "The Hunger Games" or "The Dark Knight Rises" but to the high-school comedy "Project X." The found-footage movie was downloaded more than 8.7 million times, according to TorrentFreak -- a surprise given its middling box-office performance ($54.7 million in the United States and about $101 million worldwide).

"Project X" beat out much bigger hits like "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" (8.5 million downloads) and "The Dark Knight Rises" (8.2 million). Here are the 10 most pirated movies of the year, based on TorrentFreak's data:

1. "Project X"

2. "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol"

3. "The Dark Knight Rises"

4. "The Avengers"

5. "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows"

6. "21 Jump Street"

7. "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"

8. "The Dictator"

'Project X': 2012's Most Pirated Movie

28 December 2012 9:30 AM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

The numbers are in, and it's official: The (fictional) found-footage epic party movie, "Project X," is the most pirated film of 2012, according to TorrentFreak.

The sleeper spring break release was downloaded 8.7 million times on populat filesharing site BitTorrent, taking this year's crown for movie people most want to stare at, huddled glassy-eyed at the laptops in the middle of the night, mumbling, "Dude. Duuuuuude."

Not that the high download rate has totally emptied the pockets of the film's makers: "Project X" grossed nearly $101 million in theaters worldwide, and cost only an estimated $12 million to produce. Color us impressed with that profit margin.

Closely trailing the party movie underdog were two box office smashes: "Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol" and "The Dark Knight Rises," with 8.5 million and 8.2 million downloads, respectively. Other likely blockbuster suspects, such as the 2011 release "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" and summer's superhero hit "The Avengers" also made the list, »

As they did with TV, Torrent Freak has released its annual roundup of the most pirated movies of 2012 (full list below), and guess what made the top of the list? 3 high school seniors throw a birthday party so boss it apparently got shared/downloaded almost 9 million times -- apparently making it the #1 pirated movie of of 2012. Congratulations to the filmmakers and studio not seeing a penny of those grosses? They don't need it, right? Torrent Freak compiled a list of the most shared movies on BitTorrent in 2012. Leading at number one is “Project X,” the Todd Phillips-produced/Warner Bros.-distributed party comedy that actually features no stars (in fact if the average pleeb can name an actor in the cast off the top of their head without the aid of Google, hats off to them). A found-footage film, shot on a shoestring budget (though never reported), "Project X" grossed $100 million internationally. To think if the studio would have figured to a way to charge even a meager $2 for each download, they'd be looking at approximately another $17 million in revenue. »

From a domestic box office perspective, The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises and The Hunger Games were the winners in 2012, with The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 and Skyfall coming in fourth and fifth respectively. The latter two spots on the list are more impressive when you consider that both films have only been out for a month or so. Regardless, these films raked in the dough, but only two of them made the Top 10 list of most pirated movies of 2012. The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises are both on TorrentFreak.com's list of most pirated movies of 2012, with The Dark Knight Rises coming in at #3 with 8,230,000 downloads. The list was compiled by TorrentFreak from information they collected from several sources, including reports from all major BitTorrent trackers. Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol ranks at #2.
