Of all the idiot plans, Stefan...
12 December 2010 | by (Australia) – See all my reviews

Best bits of the episode...

Elena running into Alaric (semi-naked) and Jenna (clothed) was both funny and awkward (and then he offered her the bowl of cereal he was clutching to his crotch to cover himself up. Yeah, sure, Alaric, Elena's gonna LOVE eating something that's been in your crotch....not). Poor Elena. Alaric's "Well...I'm naked...so I'm gonna go." was amusing. Good on Jenna for getting some.

Damon's face/expression when Elena talked about Klaus killing everyone she cares about (including him and Stefan).

Jeremy finally listened to the criticisms of his Jared Padalecki/Sam Winchester-like hair and got it cut at long last! Hallelujah, one less emo mop of doom in the world! As if seeing Alaric and Jenna post-coitus wasn't bad enough, then she caught Rose in a bathrobe and expecting Damon. I can imagine Elena would want to carve her eyes out with a knife after this episode.

Damon's "Gee, thanks, you sixteen year old...child. Why're you even here?" line to Jeremy when he offered to go into the tomb and get the moonstone off Katherine.

I liked Rose's "The guy was a vampire almanac, knowing too much information just...bit him in the arse." line to Elena, in reference to dead Slater.

Damon's "Alaric's stake gun's in my trunk" line sounded dirty.

Elena certainly showed off her manipulative side this episode. First, calling in a favour from Rose (for having stopped Stefan and Damon from killing her), then telling Slater's girlfriend Alice that Rose would turn her (but totally lying through her teeth). To top it off, Elena revealing to Rose that she wanted Klaus to come kill her so it'd save her family? Brave, but also kinda stupid. As there's no guarantee that once he killed Elena he wouldn't go after her family anyway just for the hell of it.

Smart of Katherine to not have the moonstone on her person and instead have it back far enough in the tomb that it gave her time to recover from Jeremy's stake/incapacitating ash trick (she looked kinda scary after chomping down on his neck and then gasping with the blood all over her mouth. Dopey teenager must taste good...especially after having been starved for blood). Foolish Jeremy. Guess cutting his hair didn't make him any smarter. Katherine shoving him away as she talked to Stefan was amusing.

Tyler watching the vid of Mason's changing truly showed how painful an experience it is - which is the way it SHOULD be. It shouldn't be a cakewalk, and Tyler finally got to show an emotion other than 'anger' as he watched the agony his uncle went through. I liked Caroline being there for him. A werewolf couldn't ask for a better vampire friend.

Stefan saving Jeremy from Katherine by running in and tossing him out thereby trapping himself in the tomb? While I'm sure Elena would appreciate him saving her brother, I think it just took a bad situation and replaced it with another one. Then again, I guess Stefan did the only thing he *could* do. Katherine knew he'd do anything for Elena, and so she probably kept Jeremy alive for that exact reason.

Smart of Rose to just get the hell out of there when Elijah showed up. I don't blame her for making a speedy exit, considering what he did to her last episode.

Damon's "I killed you. You were dead." line to Elijah amused me.

What I liked about this episode? Nina is a delight as Katherine whenever her character's on screen. I liked her being at her evil best and feeding off unkillable Jeremy (though, in actual fact, she could have killed him quite easily if she'd wanted to. All she needed to do was remove his ring - which she *had* most definitely noticed, since we heard her mention it. Then again, of course she wouldn't want to kill him, when she could just keep feeding on him and making herself stronger).

I also enjoyed Elena telling off Damon for the way that he (as well as Stefan) tends to make decisions *for* her. Okay, so not all her decisions are the best ones ever, but I'm glad she's not putting up with their crap (as far as trying to control what she does is concerned).

I did like the Caroline and Tyler scenes/interaction. I've never been a fan of Tyler, but he was tolerable in his scenes with her.

Everything else? Not that great. This was actually quite a drop in quality from the episodes we've gotten so far this season, I thought. Seriously, the show has kept a nice steady momentum up until now. I'm sure the dull warlock pair have something to do with that. They're just not interesting. And I'm way past ready for Elijah to die (properly) now. He's long past his expiry date.

It might seem like I'm being a bit harsh/unfair on this episode, but that's only because I've come to expect such high quality from this show on a regular basis. Here's hoping you return to your usual awesomeness next episode, TVD.
