- When the American Senator James Van Horn has a serious car accident, he immediately goes to surgery; however Newton invades the hospital and abducts him shooting the staff. There is a shootout with Broyles and Newton shoots Van Horn in the eye. The Fringe Division finds that the senator is a shapeshifter and they take his body to Walter's laboratory. He finds that it is possible to revive the shapeshifter and recover his data disc. But the alternate Olivia calls Newton and he sends the shapeshifter Ray to the hospital to retrieve the disc. When he returns home, Newton orders him to kill his family. However Ray is connected to his wife and son and refuses to follow the order. What will happen?—Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- Newton, concerned about the consequences of a distressing development involving a high-ranking official, is forced to call to action a sleeping shapeshifter. As Walter and the rest of the team gather evidence, they move the investigation to Massive Dynamic, where Olivia goes on high alert and Walter finds himself in a perilous situation.—Fox Publicity
- Boston, Mass. Out to dinner on a date, Peter (Joshua Jackson) and Fauxlivia (Anna Torv) play guess-the-couple's-story, observing their fellow diners. He says you can always tell when people haven't slept together. Awkward silence.
On the way out, Fauxlivia excuses herself to take a deep breath in the bathroom.
Brookline, Mass.
Senator Van Horne (Gerard Plunkett) stops at a lemonade stand, as he's driving away he's slammed into by a truck. At the hospital, doctors can't understand why he has no pulse but is still breathing.
Broyles (Lance Reddick) comes to the hospital, greeting Van Horn's wife Patricia (Shannon Cochran). He knows her.
In the OR, the senator has no blood pressure, but is somehow not dead. They're working on him when Newton the head shape-shifter comes in shooting. He takes out a couple doctors, then wheels the senator away, shooting security guards as he goes. Broyles hears and goes toward the sound of the gunshot.
He comes on Newton in a hallway and yells at him to stop. Newton takes a hostage for cover, then shoots the senator in the head and runs off.
Broyles runs over to check on his friend and sees mercury -- telltale shape-shifter blood- oozing form his eye.
Massive Dynamic
Peter meets with Nina (Blair Brown), who claims to be OK with Walter (John Noble) taking over. "With a basement lab in Harvard, Walter was able to open a wormhole into another dimension that basically shredded all the laws of science. I can't wait to see what he's capable of doing with a multi-billion dollar corporation," Peter says.
Cut to Walter giddily talking to a group of scientists, who don't seem to get him. He tells them there are no limits, except those we impose on ourselves. He's babbling and excited at the possibility of working there. He's also hot and starts taking off his pants. This is when Peter comes to get him for their case. Nina excuses Walter to the group as "unorthodox." "He's also tripping his brains out right now," Peter says.
Cut to the hospital.
Broyles explains things to the team. He wants to know how long ago Van Horn was replaced by a shape shifter.
Fauxlivia goes to shut down his office. Broyles plans blood tests for everyone on the Hill.
Later, Walter examines the body as an agent observes. Peter wonders if shooting Van Horn through the eye was intentional. Walter wants to try to fix the shape-shifting machine.
Fauxlivia calls Newton, asking what Van Horn knew. He knew about Fauxlivia, that's how they got the info on Olivia and the Fringe team. Newton says data recovery is impossible and her cover is safe "for now."
He needles her, telling her he thinks Peter has an inkling she's not his Olivia. He says she's not fully committed to the task "and because of that, you will fail."
Walter wants the body transferred to MD. As Peter is dialing, Van Horn's hand twitches. Fauxlivia comes in to the good news, as Walter puts it, "the tin can is still kicking."
Astrid (Jasika Nicole) arrives at MD to help Walter. She has a porn mag and a picture of George W. Bush. He tells her they're making a treasure map to find Van Horn's data storage using those items as visual stimuli. They're looking for memories.
In Van Horn's office, Fauxlivia goes through his security briefings and tries to get Peter to leave. She steps out to take a call from "Rachel" -- Newton. She tells him Van Horn is alive and where to find him.
Peter finds something -- a photo of Olivia and all their Fringe cases.
Yonkers, NY A dinner family is interrupted by a knock at the door. It's Newton with an assignment for Ray, the dad, who he hasn't seen in five years. He gives him a file on where Van Horn is. He suggests Ray just take a new identity to gain access. After, he can take a new identity. Newton cautions him to leave no traces. Ray seems to resist.
At MD, Walter tells the team they can question Van Horn on who the other moles are. He shows them Van Horn's reactions to the visual stimuli, like a picture of his wife. He wants to bring his actual wife in to provoke a stronger response. Fauxlivia thinks it's a bad idea, but Broyles vouches for her.
Back in Yonkers, family man Ray takes a gun and shape-shifting device out of his safe. He seems to be having mixed emotions about the assignment.
He checks on his 7 year old son, with fatherly concern. The kid is worried about a monster under his bed. The dad tells him monsters can actually be quite nice if you get to know them.
Patricia Van Horn arrives to see her half-machine half-dead husband. She wants to help.
She says hi to him at his bedside. He doesn't react. Walter encourages her to talk to him, then try touching him. She puts her hand on his shoulder and tells him the kids have been asking for him. The computers start to register neural responses. Fauxlivia tries to remain calm.
Astrid tells Walter to look at the activity at the base of his spine, which doesn't make sense to Walter. Suddenly, he opens his eyes and starts reciting names and dates. Patricia tells them to pull the plug and he goes limp. She recognizes what he said as hotels they were looking at for their anniversary. Walter thinks any data in there might be lost.
Fauxlivia gets a text saying "ETA 15 minutes. Get out now." She tries to encourage Walter to take a break.
They go to the cafeteria. He's upset that he put Patricia through that with no results. Talking about animal crackers and dinosaurs in line, he has a break-through. He runs back to the lab. As he's getting on the elevator,
Ray the shape shifter joins him.
Walter turns to him, asking if he knew the Stegosaurus has a brain in its butt. Ray takes out shape shifting device as Walter babbles.
Ray follows Walter off the elevator and hears him greeted by the security guard as Dr. Bishop.
Sitting in the cafeteria, Peter wonders how Patricia didn't notice her husband had changed. He figures she might have, but made excuses to herself to dismiss what he noticed, like he's been doing with Olivia. He tells her she seems like a different person since she came back from the other side, less burdened.
Astrid joins them. Peter wonders where his dad is.
Upstairs, Walter flops Van Horn over and cuts into his spine. Ray comes in with his gun drawn, telling Walter to step away. As Ray cuts into the spot for the chip, Walter marvels he was actually right. Then he takes a scalpel and stabs Ray in the gut. Ray tosses Walter aside.
Downstairs, Peter and Fauxlivia get on the elevator as Ray gets off. As the doors close Peter sees mercury on the elevator buttons. Fauxlivia volunteers to go after the shape-shifter while Peter checks on Walter.
At the lab's floor, Peter sees the security guard dead and his dad on the floor -- but he's only unconscious, with a bump on the head.
Fauxlivia comes back up, saying she couldn't find him. Walter tells Peter the shifter took the memory drive. Peter logs onto the security system to look at surveillance.
Ray returns home to find Newton waiting outside for him. Ray says he didn't have to shift and gives him the drive. Newton tells Ray he "took care of" his family. Ray is horrified. Newton tells him he didn't do anything, he just wanted to see his reaction. He tells Ray it's time to move on, this is what they do. Ray pleads with him, saying his family means so much to him.
Newton shoots him through the forehead.
He's putting the body in his trunk when a car pulls up. It's Fauxlivia and Peter. She shoots at the car, missing him.
Peter gets in and follows him, racing through traffic until he catches up. Going through a tunnel, Newton seems to deliberately wreck his car.
Peter makes a call as Fauxlivia goes over to Newton. She wakes him up, asking where the disk is. He hands it to her as she tells Peter she doesn't know if he has it.
Federal Detention Center, NY Fauxlivia goes to see Newton. She tells him the Van Horn disk is secure. She gives him a small metal square. He tells her she'll have a hard time without him.
"There are plenty of machines here, I can befriend a vacuum cleaner," she says dryly.
He tells her she clearly cares and she's questioning her ability. He tells her her integrity gives her a line she's unwilling to cross, and that will lead to her undoing. She walks away.
Peter gets a text from Fauxlivia, asking him to come over and saying they need to talk.
In his cell, Newton swallows the chip Fauxlivia brought.
When Peter knocks on Fauxlivia's door, she says she lied to him, but doesn't want to talk. She starts kissing him.
In the cell, Newton starts convulsing.
Fauxlivia keeps making out with Peter as Newton dies in his cell. Peter and Fauxlivia take their relationship to the next level.
