Once the Cinderella of film production, Spain’s animation output is now knocking on global market doors, boosted by the growing commitment of private broadcasters.
Enrique Gato’s Indiana Jones parody, “Tad, the Lost Explorer,” Spain’s biggest local toon hit ever ($24.8 million), marked one milestone. The film has gone on to corral $50 million-plus worldwide, and counting.
Ilion Animation Studios’ $60 million Planet 51, a Sony U.S. pickup, paved the way by scoring $105.7 million worldwide in 2010.
For crisis-beleaguered Spanish production, animation is proving to be a lifeline.
Two of Spain’s more anticipated releases — the $28.6 million-budgeted “Justin and the Knights of Valour,” produced by Antonio Banderas, and Argentinian Juan Jose Campanella’s $20 million Foosball — are animated features.
Obliged to invest 3% of annual revenues in Spanish film production, TV broadcasters will play a crucial role in this growing phenomenon.

Last year's Animated Oscar race is going to be a tough act to follow. In what was arguably the most competitive race of all 12 years of Oscar's newest category, there was precious little agreement about who might win and even less about who deserved to; Brave, Frankenweenie, ParaNorman and Wreck-It Ralph all had their loyal camps (Pirates! A Band of Misfits was the only "just happy to be nominated" contestant.) At the very last minute, buzz-wise, it appeared to boil down to Disney vs. Disney/Pixar. Big-fisted Ralph fought big-haired Merida and the Scottish lass won.
But what does 2013 have in store for us? It's looking like a much leaner year, and a least at first glance, a far less animated (heh) one. Monsters University might just be emblematic of what's going on. The prequel to the inaugural loser of this very category (Monsters Inc) is, like all the rest, »

Check out this fun trailer for the CG animated feature film called Metegol or Foosball in English. The film comes from Academy award winner Juan J. Campanella (The Secret in Their Eyes and episodes of House and 30 Rock). The story is built around the great sport of Foosball! I used to play Foosball all the time, but the sport just got too intense and crazy for me, so I had to give it up for the greater good. Or maybe the Foosball table broke and I just never bothered to fix it or get a new one.
The movie may not be a Pixar or DreamWorks Animation film, but it still looks entertaining. Here's the synopsis:
Metegol, also known as Foosball and Futbolín (Spanish Title), is an upcoming 3D CG animated film directed by Academy award winner Juan J. Campanella (Juan José Campanella) of “The Secret in Their Eyes” (El secreto de sus ojos »

If it feels like you've been vaguely hearing about this movie forever, well, you have. First announced way back in the fall of 2010, with early footage leaking last spring, the first proper teaser trailer has arrived for "Metegol," the animated foosball movie you've been waiting for. Improbably directed by Juan Jose Campanella, the man behind the excellent Oscar-winning thriller "The Secret In Their Eyes," the story follows Amadeo, who lives in a small town, who with the help of some table top soccer players that have come to life, embarks on an adventure to save his love Laura... from something, and learns about sportsmanship, or something. In 3D. Certainly, it's far beyond your average Hollywood far, so we're curious. But with no U.S. distribution lined up, and given no one cares about soccer here, the chances of it landing stateside seem slim. But it opens in Argentina on June 20th, »

After winning an Oscar for 2009′s El secreto de sus ojos (The Secret In Their Eyes), the Argentine director Juan Jose Campanella has turned his talent to something completely different, by taking on animation Metegol…wait, it’s called Foosball, hang on…it’s called Futbolin, they might want to make a decision there!
This 3D computer animated, Spanish language film, is undoubtedly going to appeal to a different kind of audience and seems like one rooted deeply in South American (and Spanish) passion, that very specific love for football. It’s set around Amadeo, a shy but talented boy, and of a foosball team that is trying to get back together after having been dismantled (for those who don’t know, that’s also table football!). With the help of the other foosball players, Amadeo will have to face his most terrible rival on the football pitch: the Champ. »

Despite not having a cutting edge 3D animations like Pixar, Juan Jose Campanella has done a pretty good job.

After being a the helm of the Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards in 2009, director Juan Jose Campanella decided to venture into animation. It's not a traditional route for a director, especially after winning an Oscar, but Campanella apparently felt drawn to this Spanish language film Foosball (or Metegol). The 3D computer animated film follows Amadeo, a shy but talented boy, and a foosball trying to get back together after having been dismantled. With the help of the foosball players, Amadeo takes on the most terrible football rival: the Champ. This is a much more polished tease than the first one. Watch below!
