The same qualities that help give director Amiel Courtin-Wilson’s film its strongest pull — the happy involvement of its quirky subject, other interesting interviewees, plus a solid sense of [ Read More ]

Director Amiel Courtin-Wilson is on a roll. His latest feature, Hail, is currently taking Australia by storm, and before that he built up an exciting array of observational documentaries, including Bastardy, a complex portrait of a complex man Jack Charles, which won awards and acclaim almost everywhere it played. In between Bastardy and Hail, but taking up a lot of the time during the making of both, was Catch My Disease, an epic documentary about the musician Ben lee, which Courtin-Wilson filmed over an epic span of the musician's life (something like eight years). The title comes from one of Lee's most famous songs. Featuring interviews with Clare Danes, Zooey Deschanel, Jason Schwartzman, Winona Ryder, Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and others, Catch My Disease looks at the musician's...

As many iTunes lovers and Youtube fanatics understand, music (old and new) has become a huge factor on hit television shows and both the show and artists featured benefit from the collaboration. Ever YouTube a certain scene from your favorite show for hours on end? Did it have a catchy song that you immediately downloaded? Yes, the odds are that you have.
Television show soundtracks are an obsession over here and the music played make that specific scene that much more memorable. Grey's Anatomy and Shonda Rimes have featured fantastic music at Seattle Grace and continue to do so. Matching the right songs for a medical show may seem hard, but it comes off natural and easy for the series. This can definitely be seen in memorable scenes using The Fray's "How To Save A Life" and Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars."

After carving himself out an award-inning niche in documentary filmmaking, with films like Chasing Buddha and Bastardy playing at festivals the world over, Amiel Courtin-Wilson has embarked on his long-awaited foray into dramatic features, starting pre-production on his new film Hail this week in Melbourne.
Hail is cut from the same cloth as Amiel's previous film Cicada, a short film which screened in Director's Fortnight at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival and featured Melbourne actor Daniel P. Jones recounting his shocking first real-life memory -- of a shotgun killing right in front of him -- straight to camera.
Produced by Michael Cody, Hail once again features Daniel P. Jones in the lead role. Here is the poetic synopsis.
Dan is in love with Leanne. They were born on the same day -- 19th June 1960. They eat together. They live together. They steal together. When Dan's love is suddenly ripped away from him,...

Rivalries between the states are inevitable but ultimately unproductive. While Victoria may not have the highest production investment total of the year, the cultural capital of Australia is strengthening its local slate.
Victoria is considered Australia’s cultural capital, so why isn’t it the country’s screen production capital too, or at least not anymore?
According to the National Survey of Feature Film and TV Drama Production, in 2008/09 the value of the feature and TV drama production slate in Victoria was $157m, 23 percent down from last year’s
$251m. The drop placed Victoria behind Nsw and its $434m, for the third time in the last five years.
All states savour the moment when statistics favour their efforts, but sometimes the numbers are not on their side. However, there are reasons behind this apparent under-performance, and things that those same numbers are not telling.
The dramatic statistical fluctuation is the...
