Storyline

With Amy in Sheldon's life (despite they still not being boyfriend/girlfriend), Bernadette in Howard's life, and even Raj now having a girlfriend (she being deaf so it doesn't matter that he can't speak to her), Leonard is the only one of the group who is currently without a significant female in his life. He doesn't seem to mind too much until everyone, even Stuart at the comic book store, constantly reminds him as such. And Leonard's air of desperation - as Amy refers to it - means that in his current state he is unlikely to find a girlfriend on his own. So Leonard reluctantly invokes the girlfriend clause in his friendship with Howard, meaning that Bernadette needs to find him a girlfriend. But will Leonard be desperate enough to continue to date Bernadette's choice of Joy, a friend from her self-defense class, a woman who talks about the hundred different ways she can rip his private parts off his body? Meanwhile, Sheldon fears that Amy's request for him to meet her mother is her ... Written by Huggo

Trivia

Raj mentions having a deaf girlfriend. Whether he actually does or is making it up, he does eventually date a deaf girl in season 5 (the wiggly finger catalyst). See more »

Goofs

When Sheldon names the closest stars in ascending order of distance, he misses Alpha Centauri B (which in orbit with its close binary, Alpha Centauri A alternates between the second and third closest stars - after Proxima Centauri) Also Sheldon really should have started with our own Sun which of course is also a star and by far the closest. Amy Farrah Fowler: I believe a misunderstanding may have occurred when I asked you to meet my mother.
Sheldon Cooper: No misunderstanding. I'e learned what that request actually means, and I don't want to be joined to another object by an inclined plane wrapped helically around an axis.
Amy Farrah Fowler: In what way are you screwed?

Leonard and Sheldon's opposite sex problems are the topic of "The Desperation Emanation" episode of "The Big Bang Theory"
1 October 2011 | by (Baton Rouge, La.) – See all my reviews

In this last season episode of "The Big Bang Theory": Leonard is bemoaning not having someone to date. At least he's in the same boat as Raj...until Raj reveals he's going out with a deaf girl. "What?" asks Leonard. "That's what she said" comes the reply (Nice reference to the U.S. version of "The Office"). So Leonard asks Howard for a favor since that's how Howard got Bernadette. Bernadette's friend Joy turns out to be someone who openly wipes her armpit sweats in public so it's no go...until she invites Leonard to a wedding. Meanwhile, when Amy invites Sheldon to meet her mother, Sheldon doesn't like the implication of taking their relationship to the next level and tries to avoid her. It turns out she only wants her parent to think they're having intercourse (though that mother doesn't seem too thrilled when she's told that) and not actually becoming boyfriend/girlfriend...Another funny ep of "The Big Bang Theory" though I wasn't too enamored of the first appearance of Joy before she said a few more lines that I thought was pretty hilarious. Loved the way Amy and Sheldon just matter-of-factly said they were having intercourse to her mother. So on that note, "The Desperation Emanation" is another worthy ep of "The Big Bang Theory". P.S. If you're wondering why Kaley Cuoco isn't in this one, she had broken a leg while horseback riding a few weeks before and was in the process of healing it.
