12 hours ago | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

With Ghost in the Shell set for its UK home entertainment release on Digital on July 24th and on August 7th on DVD and Blu-ray, we chat to actor Pilou Asbaek about his role in the film as Batou, and working with Scarlett Johansson who portrays the character of Major.

Were you familiar with the source material for Ghost in the Shell?

I saw some of the anime in the 90s but I can’t say I was a fan. It was a part of my history, but I wasn’t like one of those die-hard fans.

How did you become involved in the film?

It’s actually an interesting story. It’s a very long story so I’ll try to make it short. I worked with one of the producers in a little indie film before that. And he introduced me to the director of Ghost in the Shell, »

Michael Fassbender is on the Case in First Trailer for Tomas Alfredson’s ‘The Snowman’

19 July 2017 7:02 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Director Tomas Alfredson returns with The Snowman, his first film since 2011’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Adapted from the novel by Norwegian crime-writer Jo Nesbø, The Snowman follows Harry Hole (yes, really), a detective with unorthodox methods who finds himself investigating the disappearance of a woman whose scarf was found wrapped around a snowman.

Michael Fassbender plays Harry Hole (yes, really), and he leads a cast that includes Rebecca Ferguson, Chloë Sevigny, Charlotte Gainsbourg, J.K. Simmons, Val Kilmer, James D’Arcy, and Toby Jones. An adaptation of The Snowman has been knocking around since at least 2013, when Martin Scorsese was first attached to helm the film, but then the Let the Right One In director took the helm and ahead of a release this fall, the first trailer has landed.

“It’s got that Scandi-noir element to it, for sure. I think it’s going to be very rich. I love working with Tomas Alfredson. »

Wish Upon movie review: be careful what movies you see about wishes you should be careful about

14 July 2017 1:55 PM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

MaryAnn’s quick take… Simple, yet stupid. A magic box grants a teen wishes… that don’t come free. Apparently they’re not making eighth graders read “The Monkey’s Paw” anymore. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Have you ever heard the phrase “Be careful what you wish for?” You haven’t? Then you are the only person besides Ohio high-schooler Clare, who acquires a magic box that grants seven wishes, and doesn’t seem to think there’s anything hinky going on even once way too many people around her are dying in freakish ways after she wishes to get rich — and does! — and wishes to be the most popular girl in school — and it happens! — and so on. I mean, one bizarre accident in your vicinity is weird, and two is a coincidence. »

Movies That Still Make Us Feel Proud To Be American — Critics Survey

3 July 2017 1:22 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)

This week’s (exceedingly difficult) question: In honor of our nation’s upcoming birthday, what is the movie that still makes you most proud to be an American? Or, for foreign critics: What film most compelling sells you on the promise of America’s potential?

Joshua Rothkopf (@joshrothkopf), Time Out New York

I know there are movies that are more complex, but “Apollo 13” gets me every time. It begins with the cynical idea of an American Dream that’s already in the rearview mirror: Moon launches, once the pride of a nation, have become routine — yesterday’s news. But journalists swarm when the orbiting crew falls into jeopardy. »

‘Jurassic World 2’ Is Actually Going to be Called…

23 June 2017 4:30 AM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Nostalgia is a powerful tool at a film studio’s disposal.  It’s what makes movies like Independence Day: Resurgence possible twenty years after the first movie hit theaters.  It helped drive The Force Awakens to become 2015’s top-grossing movie.  And it’s what continues to justify sequels to a certain dinosaur movie that came out back in 1993. After two increasingly terrible follow-ups in the decades since, Jurassic World hit theaters to extraordinary fanfare.  Nobody cared that the characters were made of cardboard and the whole thing was just a bigger-scale retread of the first movie again: it was damned entertaining, something

New trailer debuts for Oscar hopeful Battle of the Sexes, starring Emma Stone and Steve Carell

22 June 2017 5:04 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Author: Scott Davis

Fox Searchlight Pictures have today debuted a brand new trailer for their upcoming comedy-drama Battle of the Sexes, which you can view in the player below.

Directed by Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton, the filmmakers behind Little Miss Sunshine, the film tells the true story of the match between tennis greats Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) and Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) from the 1970’s that was dubbed the “Battle of the Sexes”. The film is produced by Danny Boyle (T2 Trainspotting), amongst others, and is written by Simon Beaufoy, the Academy Award Winning writer of Slumdog Millionaire.

Here’s the official synopsis:

In the wake of the sexual revolution and the rise of the women’s movement, the 1973 tennis match between women’s World #1 Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and ex-men’s-champ and serial hustler Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) was billed as the Battle Of The Sexes and became one of the most watched televised sports events of all time, reaching 90 million viewers around the world. As the rivalry between King and Riggs kicked into high gear, off-court each was fighting more personal and complex battles. The fiercely private King was not only championing for equality, but also struggling to come to terms with her own sexuality, as her friendship with Marilyn Barnett (Andrea Riseborough) developed. And Riggs, one of the first self-made media-age celebrities, wrestled with his gambling demons, at the expense of his family and wife Priscilla (Elisabeth Shue). Together, Billie and Bobby served up a cultural spectacle that resonated far beyond the tennis court, sparking discussions in bedrooms and boardrooms that continue to reverberate today.

The film also stars Andrea Riseborough (Birdman), Sarah Silverman (The Book of Henry), Bill Pullman (Independence Day: Resurgence) and Alan Cumming (The Good Wife) and is set to open in UK cinemas on October 20th.

How 'The Shallows' Saved Mandy Moore's Shark Attack Movie, '47 Meters Down'

15 June 2017 12:30 PM, PDT | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

This summer, it's Mandy Moore's turn to fight a shark. In 47 Meters Down (out June 16), the onetime "Candy" singer stars alongside Vampire Diaries actress Claire Holt as two sisters whose vacation takes a turn for the worst when their diving cage breaks away from a boat and sinks to the bottom of the ocean. To get to safety, the sisters will have to swim through waters infested by bloodthirsty great white sharks. Guess how far that swim is? Anyway, here's something strange: I own a copy of this movie on DVD, except it's titled In the Deep.

That's because 47 Meters Down was initially set to be released straight-to-dvd last August, just a little over a month after the summer's other shark attack movie, The Shallows, hit theaters on June 24. (Another weird fact: In the Deep, which 47 Meters Down was briefly rebranded, was the original name of The Shallows from Anthony Jaswinski's script.) In the end, it's not »

Dan Aykroyd Criticizes Ghostbusters Reboot Again, Says It Should Have Had More From Original Cast

6 June 2017 12:19 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Yesterday, Ghostbusters legend Dan Aykroyd made his feelings for 2016’s reboot very clear when he stated that it “cost too much” and stated that director Paul Feig will “not be back on the Sony lot any time soon.” Today, he’s continued to air his grievances with the movie, with the following post on his official Facebook page.

Paul Feig made a good movie and had a superb cast and plenty of money to do it. We just wish he had been more inclusive…

Posted by Dan Aykroyd on Monday, June 5, 2017

At least this time around, Aykroyd – who played Dr. Ray Stantz in the original two Ghostbusters movies – took the time to compliment the film. He admitted that “Feig made a good movie” and that the all-female cast were “superb.” However, he revealed that he thought it should have been “more inclusive” to the “originators.” Presumably, he means the original team of Ghostbusters: himself, »

Spaceballs 2 may finally be taking off thanks to Star Wars

With word this week that Tom Cruise is set to begin production on Top Gun 2 very soon, news on another long-awaited sequel has arisen that could see a classic comedy get the follow-up it has already “suggested”.

In a recent Q&A with comedy legend Mel Brooks, which followed a special screening of his classic Young Frankenstein, the writer/director/producer spoke at length about the film and about his career on the whole and chat soon turned to another film in his repertoire – 1987’s Spaceballs.

The film, which co-starred Brooks, was a spoof of Star Wars and grossed just over $38million from a $22million budget and this isn’t the first time a sequel has been talked about. Indeed, in the film itself, the Yoda-spoof character Yoghurt speaks to Bill Pullman’s Lone Starr (aka Han Solo) and says the two may “meet again in »
