"Birdland", written as a jazz instrumental by Joe Zawinul, first recorded by the group Weather Report, and since covered by many others, including Maynard Ferguson and Manhattan Transfer (who made up their own lyrics). The piece is named in honor of the New York jazz club Birdland, which in turn was named for the saxophonist Charlie "Bird" Parker (also known as "Yardbird").
