Rescued from his precarious situation, Rick meets a band of scavengers who have made their way to Atlanta to get supplies for their larger group that lives in a makeshift camp just outside the city. They're trapped in a department store with hundreds of zombies trying to break down the door to at them. Tensions are high and Rick ends up handcuffing one of them, a redneck named Merle Dixon, to keep him from killing someone. They try to escape through the sewers without success and Rick comes up with a clever scheme to draw the zombies away from their location. They have to leave one man behind however. Written by

Legendary songwriter Craig Wilde (Craig Braginsky
on IMDb) did a walk on as a zombie. It is the 4th time he has played an uncredited zombie. See more
When Rick and the rest of the group are stuck inside the department store they cover themselves with "guts" because the zombies can smell the living. However, in the second season when they are stuck on the freeway, zombies walk right by them while they are hiding under the cars. This is not a goof. In "Guts" when Rick and Glenn cover themselves, they do it to avoid being attacked once seen by walkers. In "What Lies Ahead", when the group hides under the cars, the walkers don't smell them because walkers can't smell any better than the living. See more
