BBC Says New ‘Doctor Who’ Actress Will Be Paid Same as Current Star

20 July 2017 4:09 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The first female Doctor will have to continue the fight to preserve hope and light in the universe, but there is one thing she won’t have to struggle for: pay parity with her male predecessor.

BBC director-general Tony Hall told the Evening Standard that new star Jodie Whittaker will receive pay parity with Peter Capaldi when she takes on the role starting with 2017’s Christmas special.

The news comes on the heels of the recent firestorm faced by the BBC after its top stars’ salaries were released and it was revealed that the highest-paid female celebrity, Claudia Winkleman, makes less than a quarter of the highest-paid male star, “Top Gear’s” Chris Evans, each year. In addition, only one-third of stars making over $194,000 (£150,000) per year are female.

Hall added that he was very pleased with the appointment of a female Time Lord.

Amid Pay Gap Criticism, BBC Says New 'Doctor Who' Actress Will Be Paid Same as Current Star

When the BBC on Wednesday revealed the wages of its top earners, the broadcaster came under instant fire for sexism, with the figures showing a major disparity between the wages of its male and female employees.

Many of Thursday's front pages in the U.K. were dedicated to the fact that former Top Gear host and Radio2 DJ Chris Evans earned some $2.9 million in 2016, almost five times more than the highest paid female, Strictly Come Dancing presenter Claudia Winkleman

BBC warns of talent pay inflation

20 July 2017 3:01 AM, PDT | ScreenDaily | See recent ScreenDaily news »

Corporation says it could lose stars to ITV, Sky, Netflix and Amazon.

The BBC has warned that the forced disclosure of star salaries will have a widespread inflationary impact on top-tier talent pay (reports Broadcast).

Director general Tony Hall said that revealing the pay for inhouse, on-screen talent earning more than £150,000 could result in the corporation losing stars to commercial rivals such as ITV, Sky, Netflix and Amazon.

He branded the measure, insisted on by the government as part of the BBC’s charter renewal process, a “poacher’s charter”. “We’ve always said that giving names could be inflationary and in the end it will drive up salaries by setting benchmarks and raising expectations,” said Hall. “It’s pushing wages up at a time when we’re bringing down costs, and undermining the competitiveness of the BBC.”

BBC salaries: corporation falls short on Bame, gender gap pay

19 July 2017 4:10 AM, PDT | ScreenDaily | See recent ScreenDaily news »

Just 11% of top talent from diverse background.

Just one-tenth of the BBC’s top on-screen talent is from a black, ethnic, minority background (Bame), the corporation’s Annual Report has revealed (reports Broadcast).

Bame stars make up 11% of the corporation’s top earners, with the likes of BBC Radio DJ Trevor Nelson and newsreader George Alagiah among the highest paid, with salaries of between £250,000 and £300,000.

Radio 4 Today programme presenter Mishal Husain earns between £200,000 and £250,000, less than half than her colleague John Humphrys’ £600,000-£650,000 salary.

Across the BBC, some 14% of its workforce is from a Bame background, in line with the national average.

Bame stars’ salaries pale in comparison with some of the corporation’s biggest earners, which include Radio 2 presenter and former Top Gear host Chris Evans, who topped the payroll with a salary of around £2.2m.

Strictly Come Dancing host Claudia Winkleman, who also hosted a Michael Buble special at Christmas and Film 2016, was the highest »

BBC talent gender pay gap revealed

19 July 2017 3:40 AM, PDT | ScreenDaily | See recent ScreenDaily news »

Women account for just a third of top earners.

Two thirds of the BBC on-screen talent earning more than £150k are men and only one third are women, the BBC Annual Report will reveal later today (reports Broadcast).

In an internal video for BBC staff seen by Broadcast, director general Tony Hall admitted that the disclosure of pay of named individuals, instigated by the BBC’s new charter, has highlighted the need to “go further and go faster” on issues of gender and diversity.

The BBC will tomorrow publish the salaries of on-screen talent paid for directly by the licence fee, who earn more than £150,000.

While those paid via independent producers will not be listed, the salaries of stars working on BBC Studios-produced series such as Strictly Come Dancing duo Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly and Top Gear’s Matt LeBlanc will be disclosed in this Annual Report.

Former Top Gear presenter climbed out of vehicle moments before it burst into flames following fall down a hill in St Gallen, Switzerland

Former Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond was seconds from being “incinerated” after a car he was driving plummeted down a hill, flipped over and burst into flames.

The accident occurred in the town of St Gallen in north-east Switzerland during a shoot for his Amazon show The Grand Tour. The 47-year-old managed to escape the wreckage of a Rimac Concept One supercar worth £2m that had plummeted down the steep Hemberg Hill climb.

It was the biggest crash I've ever seen and the most frightening but incredibly, and thankfully, Richard seems to be mostly Ok.

Paul Hollywood’s Big Continental Trip – like watching a lifer on day release

On a sabbatical from Bake Off, the master baker drives a procession of increasingly ridiculous supercars around Europe

To Italy, for the first episode of Paul Hollywood’s Big Continental Road Trip (28 May, 9pm, BBC2), in which television’s much panted-over master baker gets to cruise around sun-dappled countries in all his spray-tanned splendour.

If you thought that Bake Off’s king of the cream horn had only one string to his bow, this new series – essentially Top Gear minus the bantz and budget – is determined to set you straight. This will, the BBC hopes, be the ultimate marriage of personality and machinery, of gunmetal hair and hot bodywork, of smouldering eyes and … oh, you get the picture.
