As good as it gets for this event

The title "The 2009 AVN Adult Movie Awards" summarizes really well what this one here is about: Of course, here we have basically the adult film equivalent to the Oscars and this is the 2019 edition, so it is over a decade old now. The director is Mark Stepp, normally a truly prolific editor who worked on all kinds of awards shows such as Critics Choice Awards, Teen Choice Awards, Billboard Music Awards, MTV Movie Awards etc. but almost never as the man in charge. Here he did though and maybe that his experience is also one reason why it turned into quite a positive outcome overall. He also won two Emmys a little later after directing here. I will not mention all the names of the writers here, just two: Mark Stone is no longer with us, but he directed this even in the past as well. In contrast to Stepp, he also worked on many adult video releases himself. Gary Miller is the man in charge now and directed the AVN Awards on recent occasions while also being in charge of the writing and producing. He also really has nothing to do with directing adult films. And finally Thea Vidale. I assume she mostly wrote her own material here because she was also one of three hosts back then. I probably came across her on at least one other occasion, at least somehow she does not seem totally unfamiliar to me. Vidale is a writer, actor, comedian and wrestler too, certainly a multi-talented character. I liked her here. I think it is always a bit brave for females to host this event and I do not only applaud her courage here, but also I believe she did a really nice job overall and every time she was on the screen, which was not too often, not too rare, but the right amount, I smiled and found her funny. I mean she took the politically incorrect route, but she made fun of everybody basically, including herself and that I liked. Already with her opening about fake breasts and midgets, she kinda had me in stitches. Her co-hosts here were two adult film actresses and that is a route they frequently take: one comedian and two adult actresses. Never really men, except for the comedian part. No male actors really. Or extremely rare. But yeah, here it was all good and the right decisions got made. I enjoyed the watch quite a bit. The duation was also accurate. The version I watched ran for considerably over 80 minutes which is the running time stated here on imdb, but I also had a bit of a red carpet opening in my broadcast, so if we cut this, then 80 minutes may seem accurate. I still liked the opening. Not only because we saw the stunning Sasha Grey, probably my favorite adult film actress of all time, but also because there were other okay moments. One actress I am not familiar with called the AVN Awards "our Golden Globes", which was kinda cute because I felt this awards ceremony really meant something to her. Besides, her cleavage and dress also made it sound like she had her own pair of golden globes. Or we see Flavor Flav. He was only a guest this time, but joined in together with T-Pain when rapper Flo Rida performed his big song early on during the broadcast. Actually, it was the show's opening. With big name musicians, they never really struggled at the AVN Awards. I was surprised though he/they did not return for a second song. But no worries, not a fan either really. Not particularly my genre, but Flavor Flav's sparkling personality is tough not to like, so good he was there, also before the show began. The red carpet host was not unattractive either. Speaking of hosts, the two adult film actresses co-hosting the show were Belladonna and Jenna Haze. The latter I always found stunning. As for Belladonna, her extremely short hair (almost bald) made it a bit difficult at times for me to appreciate her, but I think here she looked pretty gorgeous with short blond hair and that means something coming from me because normally I prefer long brown or black hair on girls. But yeah, really liked her looks a lot here. Had a touch of Carey Mulligan. The fact that the two hosts also made out a bit at the very end was another highlight and again I had to laugh at Vidale there with how she acted outraged. By the way, she is older than I thought, now in her 60s already and back then in her early 50s. Would have guessed she is younger. Anyway, one problem this show always has is that it takes place in January and is aired months later, which is really not acceptable honestly. Also pretty disrespectful to adult film as a whole and especially the performers.

I shall do some more brainstorming about this one here now: One thing I always find a bit annoying is that they nominated so many people in all kinds of categories that it feels more like quantity over quality. I mean it is good if an AVN Award nomination boosts their careers, but I still cannot really get used to it. The little bathtub segment with Evan Stone, Sasha Grey and one other fella was nice. Man, I really wish Grey could have a bigger career when it comes to acting away from adult films. Somebody else who is trying her luck there too is Stoya, who was still very young back when this took place and she took home an award. We'll see how this new endeavor goes for her. Only mentioning her because I think she is also really good-looking. Many truly attractive women during the broadcast here. Definitely more than usual. As for the guys, nothing really new here. They have much longer careers and the likes of Deen (very young still), Steele, Spears, Siffredi, Jeremy and Stone are part of this show here too. However, even with longer careers, they are getting less attention than some of the girls. For example, the new female starlet category is one of the most important of the night and has been for decades basically, but the newcomer category for guys is not even included in the broadcast I think. Also not too amazing that they have so many categories (like really a gigantic amount) that are not shown. A bit disrespectful to the winners and nominees there in my opinion, but this is probably never gonna change because even back then in the old millennium when the shows sometimes ran for 2.5 hours, they did not include everybody and everything, but instead showed really long scenes from the nominated movies. I am at least glad this was not done here for 2009. What else can be said about this show? I will not go into detail really about everybody else who was a part of this show. Feel free to check out the really long "cast list" here on imdb if you care. Oh yes, one thing I must not forget: Those were the times of porn parody. A Pirates of the Caribbean spoof was nominated 30 times(!) and won a total of 15 awards. Holy moly. Other parodies we see during the broadcast included Frankenstein and Night of the Giving Head. Honestly, best film title ever! Or at least adult film title. But this is kinda symbolic for this show here because I think the biggest strength of it all and why it was much better than most other editions is that it did not take itself seriously one bit. It almost felt like a raunchy comedy show at times and not really like an AVN Awards show. Kinda sad I say this as a good thing. But yeah, one thing you will see here is girls in the audience making out. This was the time where this was common when the camera caught two ladies sitting next to each other. They at least started kissing. So the final little inclusion between Belladonna and Haze that I mentioned earlier also makes sense from this perspective. Is Jenna haze related to Allie Haze by the way? Not sure. Tell me if you know. In any case, Haze took home one of the big awards of the night too and her co-host Belladonna was also one of the big winners with three trophies. Only Joone managed the same amount, but almost nobody knows that one anymore today. Really a bit tough for me to find flaws here. Maybe the many blonde females featured during the show did not appeal too much to me. With the exception of Belladonna of course. On a more positive note, we even get a pretty nice rendition of the American national anthem here. This came unexpected. I am sure many people are not too happy about this being played at an adult film ceremony. Oh well, guess they should not watch then. I am perfectly fine with it and I would be as an American too. Oh yes, Larry Flynt was there too. Nice to see such an influential figure show up here and also good he is still alive in 2020. The AVN Awards can still need positive press and this man's inclusion probably gave it to them at least a bit. Okay, I guess this is all. If you haven't understood by now, but honestly you should have, this awards show is a rare edition of the AVN Awards that I am giving a thumbs-up to. Go watch it unless you are a gigantic prude. If you are, then might wanna fix that first. Pretty positively surprised here. Well done to everybody involved!
