I have seen three Rhod Gilbert shows on DVD now (...Flaming Battenberg Tattoo, The Cat That Looked Like Nicholas Lyndhurst and this one). This show is the least entertaining. It's funny, don't get me wrong, but it's fitfully amusing as opposed to consistently rib-tickling like the other two shows.
That may simply be down to the fact that I know Gilbert's style now and find some of his material being recycled in various guises or it may just be that this show isn't as strong.
As you may have guessed, the focus of his anger this time around is the award-winning mince pie of the title but it just doesn't seem enough to get him REALLY angry. He may be able to make obvious jokes about service stations and ridiculously powerful torches but none of it feels like a decent build up. In the two other shows that I've seen you can actually feel Rhod's stress levels rising as he rants and raves and builds up to his main point. This show is just a bit anti-climactic, to put it nicely.
I still think that he's a great guy, and a very funny comic, but I won't be rushing to rewatch this one.
