50 Reasons The Oscars Don’t Matter Anymore

25 January 2012 12:46 PM, PST | BestWeekEver | See recent BestWeekEver news »

The Academy Award nominations were announced yesterday, and we couldn’t help but notice an extreme oversight: No mention of Michael Fassbender’s penis’ amazing work in the sex-fueled thriller Shame. Now if you know me, and your name is Michael Fassbender, than this is a dream and I should probably gather my things and leave before he wakes up. If this is real life, however, then you know that my love for Faszy (Hungarian for “penisy”) is as infinite as his icy blue gaze. And his penis’ star turn in Shame should have easily nabbed him a nomination, if only for the benefit of Billy Crystal’s team of jokewriters. But alas, Fassbender was left out in the cold, his abs just shivering, his penis… still probably pretty big, as he feels what it’s like to be out of Hollywood’s glow. It is because of this snub that it hit us… »

Oscar nominations 2012: Hugo leads with 11 to The Artist's 10

The Oscars buck awards trend by awarding Martin Scorsese's Hugo 11 nominations, while The Artist trails with 10 and The Descendants with five

Full list of nominations

Following an awards season so far notable for its predictability, the Academy today upset the apple cart by awarding Martin Scorsese's 3D film 11 nominations, leaving Michel Hazanavicius's much-tipped The Artist trailing with 10.

Meanwhile, Bennett Miller's Moneyball took six nominations, as did War Horse, with Alexander Payne's The Descendants - which had been tipped as The Artist's one to beat - taking just five. Tate Taylor's The Help went home with just four, including two in the supporting actress category.

The nine films that made the Academy's best picture list (which this year could come in between five and 10) are The Artist, The Descendants, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, The Help, Hugo, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball, The Tree of Life and War Horse. »

Daily Briefing. Oberhausen Manifesto @ 50

Alexander Kluge speaks at the Oberhausen Manifesto press conference 1962

For all the news tumbling out of Rotterdam and Berlin over the past couple of weeks, we don't want to overlook a couple of pretty major announcements coming from other festivals regarding their upcoming editions. Starting with this one: "The 58th International Short Film Festival Oberhausen will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Oberhausen Manifesto (February 28, 2012) with a large-scale thematic program entitled Provoking Reality: Mavericks, Mouvements, Manifesto. To honor the anniversary of the Manifesto, perhaps the single most important group document in German film history, the festival has compiled a selection of films of the signatories, many of which have not been shown for decades and had to be restored expressly for the program."

In addition to the inevitable panel discussion, there'll also be a double DVD from Edition Filmmuseum and, in German, a collection of essays. Before moving on, this »
