Storyline

An animator is in the process of creating a series of three drawings of prominent historical figures. As the animator goes about his drawings, a narrator tells some stories about the historical figure in question. The drawings come to life as the narrator tells some anecdotes about the historical figure. As each drawing nears its completion and as the story about that figure nears its end, it becomes more and more apparent who the historical figure in question is. Written by Huggo

Inklings (1933)

*** (out of 4)

Nice short from MGM has Lowell Thomas narrating as an artist draws some historical figures. While the artist draws them at times we will see them brought to life via animation while the entire time Thomas is telling us their stories. Catherine the Great, John Paul Jones and Plato are the three subjects and the talent behind the drawings was quite impressive. I think most people are going to be entertained seeing how these drawings are made but the film goes a step further with some pre-code jokes. Most of the jokes are aimed at the appearances of the three figures but Catherine the Great takes the most abuse as we get several jokes of her being ugly as well as many jokes about her sexuality. It's made clear that they're showing her as rather easy and it's certainly funny hearing these type of jokes out of a film from this era. Plato also gets quite a few jokes done about him but most of them are about his nose. At just around 7-minutes the film certainly runs fast enough to keep the viewer entertained but it's also a good showcase for this early style of animation.
