Floyd fell flat
1 April 2010 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

Floyd is the most recent episode of season 4 of 30 Rock. Every season of this show seems to have hits and misses; this is one of season 4's weaker episodes. I reach this conclusion considering both its storyline and low laugh count.

In this episode, Liz's ex-boyfriend Floyd visits Liz, and she learns he's getting married to another woman. This disappoints Liz because she was hoping they still might have a future together.

About this story: What was the need to bring Floyd back? He was never a very funny character, largely because he was Mr. Perfect. This is also yet another episode featuring Liz doing something bad and apologizing- it feels like we've gone down this road before. Tracy and Jenna having sexual dreams about Kenneth is also unappealing to me. It's like 30 Rock's writers know they've had success with awkward sex jokes in the past so they're throwing together more of the same.

There are some good jokes here- like Kenneth being "serious." The gas leak and Floyd getting drunk off fish were inventive. The part about the "drunk kids" was particularly good, because it's bad. Liz playing a character strangled on the toilet is a nice, embarrassing joke. However, other jokes feel lazy- Kenneth mixing up love and hate and Dick Cheney's news site are key examples. I also couldn't figure out why I was supposed to care that Jack had to leave a room when a secret phrase was used. Kenneth's stories also fell flat for me, maybe because they weren't paced.

I'm getting less enthusiastic about season 4 now. I think this'll be the first season that doesn't get the Outstanding Comedy Emmy (Modern Family would be a better candidate). Still, I don't agree with people rushing to declare 30 Rock dead. It's bounced back from weak episodes before.
