This entertaining episode of Shameless had several different plot
strands each of which had a similar prominence. Mickey is fed up of
always being at his fathers beck and call without being given any
respect, he decides to get out from his father's shadow by becoming a
fireman. Ian tries to get Chesney to join the local boxing club, who's
owner Jock is in debt to Paddy, in order to save the gym they arrange
for Ricky "the Hit-man" Hatton, a real boxer, to attend a special
event... unfortunately Jock doesn't know him quite as well as he
claimed. In other story lines Liam is being hassled by school bullies,
Libby is shocked to find that Frank hasn't had the vasectomy he claimed
and there is a talent night at The Jockey.
The first two of these stories were the most interesting and ultimately come to be linked. Tom Georgeson does well as Jock, the gym owner who was less than honest about his past or his role in making Paddy the man he is today. It was great to see Mickey stand up to his father; his character has developed considerably this series showing Ciaran Griffiths to be a good actor.
