Warner Bros. Expected to Cut as Many as 1,000 Jobs (Exclusive)

17 September 2014 6:20 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Warner Bros. Entertainment is expected to cut as many as 900 to 1,000 jobs worldwide as part of a studio-wide cost-cutting move, according to people familiar with the company’s plans. The estimated reductions would amount to more than 10% of the studio’s 9,000-person workforce.

The cuts will be made in late October or early November.

Senior managers are currently assessing their businesses to come up with ways to trim overhead. Only at the end of that process will an exact reduction figure be known. It could be somewhat lower than the current numbers being speculated, but cuts are expected to be substantial.

“There is no head count target or percentage reduction target,” said Dee Dee Myers, Warner Bros.’ new executive vice president of corporate communications. “This is a budget issue, not a head count issue,” she added.

James D’Arcy Will Play Jarvis in Marvel’s Agent Carter TV Series

16 September 2014 4:49 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Marvel Studios’ second foray into network television, the ABC series Agent Carter, is poised to start production soon, but the show has just now added a key cast member.  Variety reports that Cloud Atlas actor James D’Arcy has signed on to play Howard Stark’s Butler Jarvis—yes, that Jarvis—in the period spy drama.  D’Arcy will bring flesh and blood to what is likely the basis for Tony Stark’s virtual butler in the McU, though that’s due to change in Avengers: Age of Ultron when the movie Jarvis (voiced by Paul Bettany) takes on the form of The Vision.  More on Agent Carter after the jump. D’Arcy is probably best known to many from Cloud Atlas, and he reunites with the Wachowski siblings in the upcoming sci-fi adventure pic Jupiter Ascending.  With regards to Agent Carter, Variety reports that Jarvis will be an ally »

'Agent Carter' Casts James D'Arcy as Howard Stark's Butler

16 September 2014 3:55 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

British actor James D'Arcy has joined the growing cast of ABC's Marvel's Agent Carter, playing the butler of Tony Stark's father, Howard Stark.

Dominic Cooper played Howard Stark in Captain America: The First Avenger and the Marvel One-Shot: Agent Carter, which the series is based on. Series star Hayley Atwell hinted in June that Dominic Cooper is returning as Howard Stark, but his casting has not been confirmed at this time.

The Stark butler is also an ally of Hayley Atwell's title character, although no other details about the role were released. It's possible that James D'Arcy is playing Edwin Jarvis, who was a faithful butler for The Avengers in the Marvel comic books. The character was changed to a high-tech AI computer for the Marvel movies staring with 2008's Iron Man, with Paul Bettany voicing the character.

James D'Arcy Joins Agent Carter As (Presumably) 'Jarvis'

16 September 2014 3:13 PM, PDT | ComicBookMovie.com | See recent ComicBookMovie news »

As previously reported, we'll be meeting the original, human version of Jarvis in Marvel's Agent Carter. Though he's not mentioned by name, Variety report that British actor James D'Arcy has signed on to star as Howard Stark's (we still don't know if Dominic Cooper will reprise that role) butler in Marvel's upcoming Captain America: The First Avenger spin-off series. This will almost certainly be Edwin Jarvis, who served as The Avengers faithful butler in the comics, but was replaced by Paul Bettany's AI version for the movies. The site don't elaborate any further though, simply stating that he'll be an ally of Hayley Atwell's Peggy Carter. D'Arcy was last seen as the villain in Let’s Be Cops, and he'll also have a role in Warner Bros.' upcoming sci-fi flick, Jupiter Ascending. »

Warner Bros. CEO Confirms Layoffs in Memo to Staff

4 September 2014 5:43 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Warner Bros. Entertainment chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara has told Warner Bros. employees  that layoffs are coming at every level across the studio.

The cuts are coming in the wake of a failed bid by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. to buy parent Time Warner and amid disappointing box office performance.

Tsujihara did not disclose how many cuts will take place or which of the three divisions — films, TV and home entertainment — would be most impacted. He sent the memo out late Thursday afternoon, just as the studio’s “The Judge” was opening the Toronto Film Festival, following media reports this week of possible employee reductions.

Tsujihara did not disclose how soon the layoffs would come at the Burbank studio, which has about 8,000 employees and has been the most consistently successful among the Big Six studios in recent years. It’s been at or near the top of box office »

3 September 2014 3:27 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Seth Grahame-Smith’s zombie parody of the classic Jane Austen novel, Pride And Prejudice And Zombies, was released five years ago. Granted, time doesn’t matter when it comes to adaptations. If the material is strong then it’ll last through the flippant fads of the public. With Smith’s comedy novel, the same logic applies.

This project has been in development since its publication, but now we can rejoice, as the five year drought of action has come to an end! Today another casting announcement has landed, and it comes in the form of British actor Douglas Booth signing on.

The mash-up novel follows heroine Elizabeth Bennet, who has to contend with men in high-waisted trousers and stiff upper lips And hordes of the undead. Booth has signed on to play Bingley L, “the good natured and wealthy pal of Mr. Darcy.” This could be the role that puts »

A Year After First Peek, Universal Trailers Delayed ‘Seventh Son’

29 August 2014 12:30 PM, PDT | Deadline New York | See recent Deadline New York news »

Universal has unveiled a trailer for the Jeff Bridges fantasy film Seventh Son, kicking off a five-month marketing challenge for the long-delayed big budget actioner. The Ya book-inspired adventure directed by Sergei Bodrov has been teased now for over a year in fits and starts, suffering numerous setbacks since first getting caught in the Rhythm & Hues VFX bankruptcy last year. That hitch cost Legendary an extra $4.9 million in post effects on the period fantasy adventure, in which Bridges plays a mystical warrior teaching a farmhand (Ben Barnes) to battle creatures, sorcery, and and evil queen Julianne Moore.

Initially set to open on February 22, 2013, Seventh Son was first pushed to October 18, 2013 to accomodate the VFX work. That summer distributor Warner Bros. moved it again to January 17, 2014, and even took it to Comic-Con for a panel and cast Q&A. But when Thomas Tull’s shingle split with the studio it took Seventh Son along to Universal. »
