When Jimmy "teaches" Hope to crawl, the family must baby-proof the house and find new places to store their belongings. It's soon revealed that Virginia is a hoarder and has been saving junk in the storage shed, which becomes Hope's favorite new hiding place. This leads Virginia to realize that she may have to change her ways. Meanwhile, Jimmy makes frequent unnecessary trips to the grocery store to see Sabrina.

When the doctor refuses to comment on Hope's symptoms, probably just a cold, without insurance data, Jimmy is shocked to learn his family never got some. An embarrassing episode, trying to buy potentially addictive cough-syrup at the supermarket, inspires Jimmy to seek employment there, as it comes with insurance. Burt however may not know, as he claims he can get the whole family insured by winning a city contract biding against his former employer, Green Thumb, which even Virginia won't believe. meanwhile maw maw in quarantined, or at least that's attempted, for a cold could kill her.

After it becomes painfully clear that Hope starts imitating her canine companions in the day care center, Jimmy decides it's his duty to get her into a prestigious kindergarten, which is way beyond the Chances' means, so their only hope is the single scholarship for the underprivileged, for which competition is murderous. It's utterly impossible as long as the 'blue dot' on their home isn't taken off the sex offenders website. It refers to Burt's teenage arrest for clumsy sex with willing but underage Virginia. They appeal to crazy TV lawyer Wally Phipps. Alas, dealing with the court and costs results in fresh convictions for both utterly unladylike 'ladies'. Jimmy is reduced to shameless lies, but can't go trough with fraud at even poorer kids' expense.

Season 1, Episode 9: Meet the Grandparents

Jimmy wants Hope's first Thanksgiving to bean all-American traditional family dinner, not the Chances' mere pizza. Jimmy even insists to invites the maternal grandparents, Dr. Dale and his wife Margine, who went crazy out of grief over their daughter's crime and execution. Jimmy painstakingly makes his family accommodate Dale's weird 'therapy' for Margine, only to be rewarded by Hope being kidnapped, gets her back and still extends a second invitation. Meanwhile lonely Barney from the supermarket offers to come cook a traditional feast for the all, instead of having to eat his all alone.

Season 1, Episode 10: Burt Rocks

Every year, supermarket manager Barney must chose an act for the 'Grocery-Palooza', a free show for the customers. Jimmy learns that one of the many, lame options is washed-up one-hit 'rock star' Smokey, Burt's teenager musical hero. The gang moves heaven and earth to see to it that Smokey is hired and Burt as his guitarist, only the life-long dream comes with matching stage-fright.

Jimmy refuses to let Burt sell the last of the stock of hottest toy he arranges each Christmas, demanding it for Hope, remembering how hard it was to sit by the pile himself. Burt's promise is as worthless as ever, and when he finally agrees, the only childless client, supermarket executive Barney, proves a hard nut. Jimmy ultimately allows Virginia to sign up Hope, and thus all the Chances, for the annual live church nativity crib, despite his trauma having been dragged to every performance just so she could get on stage, as a way to fight the stigma of serial killer's child. However they didn't count on the Asian new parishioners.

Jimmy is delighted when he finally meets fellow single father in the supermarket, so he agrees with Justin their kids should get play dates, despite lack of support on the Chase home front. It turns out Justin's far less dysfunctional family is also snobbish, end employs Virginia as cleaner. A last chance dinner backfires.

Jimmy lets hygiene-obsessed Sabrina and her detection use of the store's black-light to identify counterfeit banknotes convince him germs are an omnipresent health treat. Faced with bright blue proof all over the house, the Chances start cleaning like mad, only to find mad Maw Maw undoes it all in no time. Residential care being out of budgetary reach, they move her into the greenhouse, which goes quite well. However comparing family histories with Sabrina after watching family movies changes views.

Season 1, Episode 14: What Up, Cuz?

The Chances get caught in Virginia's web of lies when her cousin Delilah, whom she told Maw-Maw was dead, turns up to claim her share of the estate, her business being wiped out by the crisis. Their rivalry started when Delilah, who was spoiled and better at everything else, lost most desirable teenager Burt to jealous Virginia, so she proposes an alternative mode of payment: in 'bedroom' kind. Jimmy was to mind the 'deceased' inconspicuously, but she escapes and crashes back in.

Barely reconciled with having to help care for Jimmy's baby, Burt and Virginia realize their unsafe sex is no longer acceptable. Burt defends his manhood but is outvoted, so Jimmy drags him to Dr. Burwitz for a vasectomy and patiently humors him to get the surgery done. In the process Jimmy discovers Burt's fear for infertility stems from worries whether Jimmy will outgrow being 'his boy'. Meanwhile Virginia warns Sabrina it's only a matter of time until she'll betray her secret to the boys, but volunteers a secret of her own to be 'blackmailed' in line.

The Chances prepare to host once more Burt's cousin Mike, a hopeless loser even by their standards. Yet they find him a changed man, as neat member of a loony sect, one of Tanya's four 'brother-husbands'. Jimmy is inadvertently attracted by their neat, apparently harmonious 'fraternity'. Alas, Mike is 'divorced' and moves in whining and desperate, worse then ever. Burt has another confrontation with his brother Bruce, who wants help to get his son Mike back and gets it after explaining why he threw the boy out years ago.

Realizing the three adult Chances are klutzes and a danger to themselves, Jimmy worries whether Hope will be taken care of after an accident. After an attempt to have them teach each-other 'survival tricks' collapses in bickering, Jimmy drags his parents to dodgy lawyer Wally Phipps, who inspires including a fourth potential guardian, Sabrina. Actually she's afraid of the responsibility and Burt is offended that she ranks higher. Their survival skills are tested frightfully realistically when an armed Maw-maw mistakes them all for 'dangerous mongooses'.

She falls for a man who also lives in the past, but that includes an affair with another crone, supposedly from his Korean War days.

Jimmy, who couldn't bring himself to be so cruel, meanwhile is dragged along by his depraved ex Zoe to a party where he consumes a space drink, which ends up inducing utter panic, but his parents stick to their recent resolve not to kill their offspring with kindness any more.

Supermarket branch manager Barney tells the team he lost out each year 'despite best ideas' in the chain's annual commercial competition, so now he wants Jimmy and his colleagues to compete for this year's submission, but flattery and considerations like fair-play and team spirit get in the way. As Hope's baby-phone accidentally tunes into a neighboring house's, ear-dropping Burt discovers Andrew is being grossly abused by his tyrannical, impossible to please wife Donna and wants to help. Virginia is reluctant to risk being seen as a nosy neighbor, but agrees to help by example, which proves harder then expected.

Jimmy doesn't mind at 23 sharing his birthday with Maw Maw, although it was hell as a kid, when she had lots of friends and he none. When he turned 18, in his impertinent Goth period (alias 'Drakkar Noir'), she 'finally' felt able to throw the Chances trio out of her home, so they had to grow up suddenly, seeking real job incomes supplemented by devious ways to skin the supermarket. Five years ago however, her mind went, so they got the house back with her as senile resident hazard.

Season 2, Episode 1: Prodigy

Watching his 13 year-old self play the piano and singly beautifully, on home video, Jimmy sees trough the claim it was just a pianola, now broken. Virginia owes up she feels guilty for having strangled Jimmy's talent, estranging him from his schoolmates, until a golf club from the air knocked Jimmy down and the musical talent out of him, later object of another confession. After consulting Dr. Finklestein, the Chances try to reconstruct the past, including Maw Maw's cruel and unorthodox tutoring methods, hoping Jimmy's memory may be triggered. It seems to do so and Jimmy is bribed into the music school's annual concert, only to find out otherwise, yet there's a consolation prize to his taste.

Season 2, Episode 2: Sabrina Has Money

Burt accidentally discovers that Sabrina's father Cap is really rich and tells the home front. They now hope to 'coach' her into sharing some of the Collins wealth, but she replies to have chosen to earn her own, modest income at the supermarket, an insane waste beyond the needy, greedy Chances' comprehension. Eager for rich friends, Jimmy convinces her to take him and his parents along to her sister's engagement party. Cap takes to Jimmy, who sides with him against her petty class struggle insults. As a reward, he sends a Japanese smart toilet like Virginia adores, but that causes marital tension, like Virginia's new taste for lobster, which hurts Burt's pride and budget.

Season 2, Episode 3: Kidnapped

Jimmy is envious of Sabrina's smart-phone, yet anxious to sabotage a message on it from 'rival' Wayne. To Jimmy's repeated surprise, Virginia 'welcomes' pony-tailed hippie Jack by knocking him unconscious with a frying pan as Burt's kidnapper twenty years ago, but Burt protests and confesses that kidnapping was a scam, he set it up to spend some careless time traveling without 'chain and bolt'. Also surprising Burt, Virginia confesses that she gradually enjoyed protection and 'comfort' from measly cop Ross enough to consider a proposal from him just when Burt's return (after a 'non-'gay kiss from Ross) made her snap back. Surprising everyone, maw Maw adds a last layer of devious scheming to the past plot.

Virginia's nemesis, spoiled cousin Delilah, invites the whole family to Las Vegas for her high-profile wedding with an air force hero. Jimmy asks Sabrina along, as she always wanted to 'go wild once'. Burt is allowed to come but without cash, given his gambling record. Instead he and Jimmy earn cash doing odd and dubious jobs, but make a pittance. Virginia fails utterly to sabotage Delilah's wedding. Burt hoped to make up for his pauper wedding by renewing his vows here, but comes up with a budget comfortable alternative.

So Jimmy lets himself be blackmailed into any crazy effort to find Trevor alternative dates. Meanwhile Burt overcomes Virginia's initial disgust to retrieving Maw Maw's loose golden tooth from the toilet, which proves an eventful effort.

Jimmy dares not offend Sabrina by turning down her 'improvement', which actually wrecks his idea, a mob operated by a crawling baby. Burt and half-wit neighbor protégé Andrew come up with bro-gurt, macho flavors of yogurt. Competition day proves ruthless for candidates on various grounds, with a sting.

Jimmy's close relationship with daughter Hope has him sewing dresses, baking cookies, and wearing fancy hats at tea parties until Burt yells at him to "Stop being a girl!". In an attempt to be a little more 'dangerous' he decides to spend some time with Frank. Strangely enough waking up in Franks house after a night of partying lets Jimmy discover a new side to Frank, one that he really wants to bond with to the rest of the families horror. Discovering they were bullied by the same guy back in school, Jimmy and Frank set off on a quest for revenge that has some pretty surprising revelations in store for everyone involved.

Based on a bocks assembly toy, Jimmy and parents proudly presume Hope inherited his serial ma's IQ. Fearing to look stupid even to Sabrina as his baby daughter outsmarts him, Jimmy decides to return to high-school. Refusing to be left as the dumb family's dumbest, his parents follow suit. Old teacher Mr. Swift remembers all three once abusive, unmotivated dropouts and enjoys humiliating them in class. Tutoring by Sabrina, Frank and maw-maw helps Jimmy, Burt and Victoria, but only enough to pass in a few courses each. To avoid triple utter failure, they decide to cheat so at least Jimmy gets his G.E.D.

Season 2, Episode 12: Gambling Again

Tired of losing family possession to the pawn shop, Burt is tempted to resume gambling. Unlike his officially addicted period, he's on a winning streak. Virginia sees that as a handicap in curing him, but Jimmy and she end up playing and winning too, so the bookies want to cut them off. However the pivotal moment comes when Sabrina accuses them of missing Hope's first school play.

Season 2, Episode 13: Tarot Cards

Burt's annual tax return frenzy leads to a sneer about 'mere' cleaners making Virginia meanly blow all his stacked firm finances documentation into a mess. Desperate, he turns to Barney, who suggests hiring a manager and hesitantly accepts the job. Barney hires two eccentric Asian acrobats, who demonstrate the bliss and frustration of not being the boss anymore. Stil vexed, Virginia seeks an independent career of her own and chooses as example the tarot reader Serena and her fiancé Wayne turn to. As their questions concern a move to Africa, Jimmy is desperate to get his rival overseas, not his beloved, and expects madame ma to pull that off. However her arrogant advice has more impact then she ever guessed or cares to take responsibility for.

Season 2, Episode 14: Jimmy's Fake Girlfriend

Bored and increasingly desperate for a distraction even they can afford, Burt and Virginia try out various hobbies, until they agree improvisation acting fits them scoundrels. When Jimmy feels Sabrina a lost cause after her engagement with Wyatt, they also advise making her jealous of an imaginary perfect girl. Jimmy fails to wriggle out of a double date, so he needs to hire Mary-Louise from the acting class to play one. That proves harder but also more rewarding then expected.

As Jimmy and Sabrina's relationship continues to grow, they both begin to realize that they've been hiding some of their habits from each other. They agree to let their guards down and start acting like themselves completely, but when Sabrina reveals an unusual childhood phobia, Jimmy decides to help her overcome her fear in a startling way. Meanwhile, Burt reveals a habit he's been keeping from Virginia for years.

Season 2, Episode 16: Single White Female Role-Model

In a revolutionary mood, Sabrina starts a wide protest, but once the police arrives her followers invoke excuses one by one, even Jimmy deserts. Stubbornly provoking arrest, she lands in a prison. Her block is handled by jealous, frustrated jailer Rikki Hargrove, who feels deserted by her since their girl scouts days and seizes her chance to make Sabrina sweat. Hell-bent on preserving mayor Suzie Hellmann as Hope's sole female role model, Virginia saves the corrupt crazy bitch's bacon. As a reward, Burt extracts three wishes for the family. He squanders his on a stop sign, she hers on a cooler park for the barrio, but when Jimmy tries to use his to free Sabrina, Suzie, dumped by businessman Richard Galleria, demands a date with the cute Chance and turns on the family when politely turned down for fidelity's sake.

Season 2, Episode 17: Spanks Butt, No Spanks

When a raccoon decides to take residency under the Chance's porch, Virginia and Sabrina work together to try and lure the critter out. Meanwhile, Hope's misbehavior has become such an issue that Virginia and Burt suggest that it might be time for Jimmy to spank her, since it worked so well for them when he was younger. However, when Burt reveals a secret to Jimmy about his childhood, it answers unsolved mysteries and prompts a new outlook on teamwork and parenting.

So the family desperately tries to do with a similar-looking, untrained hog Burt bought. When it can finally be returned, Sara Louise decides to steal all the glory - or is there any?

Sabrina's new study buddy Philip is a gorgeous hunk, so Virginia convinces Jimmy he must be considered a likely rival, probably harder to eliminate than Wyatt. A dirty trick with text messages after stealing her phone does the trick, but only leads to the arrival of another stud, Philip. In the process, Burt gets hold of a tacky 'boobs mobile', which proves a bizarre success with his neighborhood mates. Jimmy comes up with a backup theory based on Sabrina's ample supplies of everything, but learns it's rooted in a family trauma.
