The second annual SNL sports review
9 December 2010 | by (Rijswijk, ZH, Netherlands) – See all my reviews

When I reviewed Saturday Night Live Sports Extra '09 eleven months ago, I had no idea the show would be on again that same month – in a newly enhanced version that is. Now with added material starring Jason Sudeikis & Will Forte as Pete Twinkle & Greg Stink and also including newer sketches such as one about the Tyger Woods scandal. And this time around Greg the Alien (Bill Hader) does indeed appear. Other than that, it's almost exactly the same show as the 2009 version. And in mostly the same sketch order too.

When comparing the two shows side by side, this second pass features more recurring SNL characters and is more sketch orientated where the first was focusing on sports. That is to say we see more of the sport stars appearing in non-sport related roles this time around. They even managed to fit the show's currently most repeated skit 'What's Up With That' (with Mike Tyson) and a trio of MacGruber sketches (co-starring Charles Barkley) into the lineup. Of course this was a couple of months before the movie came out and Will Forte unfortunately decided to leave the cast.

The famous Synchronized swimmers sketch with Chris Guest, Ed Grimley and Mr. Burns is also show in it's entirety, just like it was in SNL: Just Shorts. In fact, there are probably more sport related skits without any actual athletes in them shown in this version as well. I guess the sketches that were in last years version but omitted this time around will still viewable on the DVD version, and maybe next year they'll do yet another variation hosted by alien Greg.
