- Chuck's father returns when he finds out Chuck uploaded the new Intersect. Chuck enlists the help of Morgan on a new mission.
- We see a cabin in the mountains. A man is sharpening an axe. It looks like Stephen Bartowski (Scott Bakula) found nicer digs than the trailer. In the classified section, he finds an ad for a baby blue '78 Chevelle and starts writing down some information.
"Dad, I really need to see you. Please send me your address. Love, Ellie"
He responds back with an ad of his own, saying he'll see her soon. While decoding his message, Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) also gets a phone call from Justin (). Justin gives her a music player that would disrupt the surveillance equipment Casey was using. Ellie walks out of the office quite relieved.
Bartowskis like to keep their secrets, since she kept this information from Devon(Ryan McPartlin), and Chuck (Zachary Levi) is still keeping his dream about Shaw (Brandon Routh) a secret from Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski). He asks Morgan (Joshua Gomez) to talk later at the Buy More and has to cover for himself quickly when Sarah walks in. At the Buy More, Morgan can't believe Chuck never checked for a pulse. ("Haven't you seen a John Carpenter movie!") Chuck asks Morgan to help him figure it out and to keep it quiet from Sarah and Casey. Of course, Morgan is now scared, since Shaw knows everything about everybody, including him. He asks Chuck to let him into Castle, where he proceeds to get every bullet-proof item on his person. Sarah, however, didn't appreciate him touching the rocket launcher. Sarah sets a new record for getting information out of someone.
Morgan fesses up to Chuck that Sarah broke him...rather easily, in fact. Stephen walks into the Buy More with a low-wearing hat and sunglasses. Neither Morgan nor Sarah is thrilled that Chuck never told his dad about downloading the new Intersect, but Casey and Sarah still being around tips him off that Chuck is working for the CIA. Chuck tries to assure his dad he is out of the CIA.
CHUCK: Dad, you know me. You know I would never lie.
Sarah, as you can imagine, didn't take that lie very well. She's mad at Chuck for hiding secrets from his dad and her. Chuck tried to say it was just a dream, but Sarah reminds him that his dreams could also be influenced by the Intersect, meaning Shaw COULD be alive. Casey pulls together all of the information he has about all the times Sarah and Shaw were together. Long amounts of very awkward questioning later (didn't get to hear more about the couples' massage), Chuck has to hear about Shaw's apartment. He has a flash concerning a TR-15 safe, which Shaw had the CIA install. Chuck and Sarah have a mission: break into Shaw's apartment and see what's in the safe. However, he'll have to get out of dinner with his father first. (In Stephen Bartowski's defense, he cooks a mean grilled cheese.)
At the Buy More, Jeffster! gives a surprise performance! (And it's true...Love Hurts.) In their defense, they're making a lot of money...people are paying them to stop. Big Mike (Mark Christopher Lawrence) comes out, not to stop them, but tell them they could make a lot of money playing other chain electronic stores. Big Mike offers to manage. Jeff (Scott Krinsky) is interested, but Lester (Vik Sahay) won't have it. Jeff is ripping his soul out for the easy cash.
LESTER: Art, GOOD! Commercialism, EVIL! WEIRD! CHUBBY!
Lester is taking the -ster out of Jeffster!
Chuck asks Casey to keep an eye on Ellie, because Shaw knows everything, and Chuck thinks Ellie might be a target. ("Until we know what Shaw wants, Ellie has a second shadow.") Stephen wants to know what Chuck and Ellie are doing tonight, but Chuck has the mission, or a date as he tells his father, and Ellie gets a call from Justin. She tells him her father surprised her by showing up at her apartment, and Justin tells her to meet him at a park. She leaves, and Stephen grills Chuck about still having surveillance equipment still up and access to the CIA's database systems. Chuck lies (again) and tells his father he is only an analyst and is not a field agent...and then we see him scaling up Shaw's building with Sarah.
Casey keeps an eye on Ellie, but Justin didn't show up for the rendezvous. In Shaw's apartment, Chuck and Sarah find the safe by using special infrared glasses. It'll take time to get the correct password, but they don't have time. Shaw is coming through the door!
As our favorite spy team hides in the closet, someone does walk in, although we don't really see who it is. (And Chuck's infrared glasses let him know how turned on Sarah is.) Unfortunately, Chuck gives them away...that is, Chuck's Chuck Taylors. The person fires and escapes with a briefcase. Chuck and Sarah give chase, but the man jumps over the roof. However, he drops the briefcase. Sarah goes for the briefcase while Chuck flashes on jumping to the next roof. He does the full Neo...and misses by just a little. Shaw comes back...only it's not Shaw. It's Justin. He says Shaw is dead. (And a million IMDBers are TICKED!) He's ready to put a bullet in Chuck when Sarah fires from the street.
CHUCK: Did you get him? Check his pulse first! Make sure you check his pulse!
He takes off, and Chuck is about to fall. And then he is pulled up...by STEPHEN!
Father and son return to Castle and Stephen rips him a new one about lying to him. Chuck continues to try and downplay his significance, but there's a bigger issue going on. The safe contained information Shaw collected about The Ring (hence Justin's interest in it), and a letter that Sarah reads that Shaw wrote for after his death. Stephen overhears everything and remembered that Shaw was a Ring expert. Chuck says the mission is over.
STEPHEN: The mission is never over. There's another one, and another one, and another one. The reason a spy has to have one of those is because every mission could be their last. For every spy, there's someone who cares about them. Who has to open that box, read that message, and mourn their loss. This is a BAD BUSINESS. And I don't want my family in any part of it.
Justin meets with Ellie at his "office." He apologizes for missing the meet (obviously a ruse) and asks Ellie to do some real spy work. She agrees.
As Jeff (without Lester) makes ears bleed in the Buy More, Casey plays Morgan the message from Ellie to Justin (was that a movie about two American Idol contestants?). Morgan takes it upon himself to tell Devon that Ellie is cheating on him. Of course, he takes the long way around and tries to analyze where Devon went wrong, because Morgan obviously thinks it's Devon's fault. After several beers and a litany of reasons why Devon is the perfect husband (sorry ladies, he has his shirt on), Morgan is even further away from an answer.
Stephen asks him the question Chuck was hoping to avoid: why does the CIA let Chuck go on missions if he doesn't have the Intersect? Chuck tries to deny once again, but stopping a letter opener in mid-air gives him away. And since it was time for true confessions, Stephen finally confessed the Intersect could have a negative effect on the brain. Stephen wonders why Chuck didn't tell him, and Chuck wonders why the hell he took off again and didn't talk to him.
CHUCK: You left! Again! You taught me and Ellie how to live life without you, and that's exactly what I'm doing!
Stephen leaves, because he can't stay there and watch his son die. He bolts, and goes right past Ellie. But he first asks why Ellie wanted him there. Ellie covers by saying she missed him. He promises not to be gone as long. He hugs her...and Ellie plants a tracking device on him. Stephen gets back to his cabin and opens up a very impressive computer setup. He inserts a device from his watch and goes quickly to work.
Sarah is able to track down Chuck's father almost as fast as the device on his jacket. Stealing his license, she cross-verified a house with no phone or cable, but consumed a lot of electricity. Unfortunately, Justin's men are already at the house. The item in his watch is now integrated into the computer. Justin's men capture Stephen, and Chuck soon follows after Sarah drives him up to his cabin. They demand to know where the "Governor" is, the thing that is keeping him alive. Stephen blocks a punch with his watch, which the men take. They slice the gas lines to blow up the cabin. Time for a full confession from Chuck.
CHUCK: I came up here to tell you WHY I downloaded the Intersect. That I'm special and that I can help people. But given the circumstances, I'll just have to show you.
One flash later, Chuck goes ballistic and starts kicking ass. Stephen gets up to help, and Sarah charges in after hearing the commotion, including a SWEET deflection of a knife going at Chuck's head with an axe.
STEPHEN: Does she have the Intersect, too?
CHUCK: No, dad. That's all her. Hi, honey!
Big Mike reunites Jeffster! by talking to Lester by helping him realize Jeff needs him. Big Mike can sympathize. He was the Rain of Earth, Wind, Fire, and Rain in 1978. He gives Lester his old band outfit.
Back at Chuck & Sarah's, Stephen tells Chuck why The Ring came to his cabin. The Governor governs the Intersect. It protects the person who has the Intersect by controlling their neural network, much like a pacemaker controls the heart. Stephen will make Chuck a Governor.
STEPHEN: You downloaded the 2.0 for the same reason I invented it: to help people. If you want to be a spy, I'm going to do everyting I can to help you be the man who you want to be.
Morgan consults with Casey. He's ready to marry Awesome, so the problem must be on Ellie's side. Casey breaks in to take a look, and gets greeted by Ellie, who surprises everyone by being home. She gets the gun hidden in the radio, which Justin tells her about, since he is on his way. Ellie isn't much for the gun, so she nails him with a frying pan instead. Casey is out cold, and Justin spirits her away to his office. He thanks her for her help, tells her she's brave, and locks her in his office.
Sarah needs to talk to Chuck and gives him her spy will.
SARAH: This is...me. This is everything about me. And if something should happen to me, the only person I want to have it is you.
In the middle of the night, Chuck writes his as we see the people in his life.
My name is Chuck Bartowski, and if you're reading this, it means I'm already dead. I don't know what will end up killing me, but I chose to be a spy and there are consequences to that. Maybe it'll be my emotions that do me in, or a slip-up trying to protect my friends...or my family, who never wanted me to be a part of this. Or it could be the thing I never saw coming. But I do know, it's coming.
And faster than he may think, if a person downloading an Intersect with Daniel Shaw's ID is any indication.
