IMDbTV Pick: Showtime's "Penny Dreadful"

The subtle trick Showtime's "Penny Dreadful is that it is far less about the blood, gore and the specter of gruesome death than the sharp pain and exhilarating pleasure of living, and the terror of feeling alone even in close company. Read our review in the May Picks section.

Storyline

Lois meets up with an old friend, Naomi Robinson, at a college reunion event. Naomi requests Lois to do her a favor and to come to her house to discuss the matter. After Peter jumps to a series of conclusions about the "favor", Lois is asked to become a surrogate mother, as Naomi and her husband are unable to conceive a child of their own. Although Peter is upset, Lois agrees and the in vitro fertilization is performed. Peter tries several attempts to attack Lois and cause her to have a miscarriage, before confronting her one-on-one. Lois stands her ground, but then she and Peter learn that the Robinsons were killed in a car accident. Lois is devastated and, after a consultation with a family planning counselor, ultimately decides to terminate the pregnancy. However, as Peter is leaving the clinic, he is accosted by anti-abortion activists urging him to change his mind about aborting the baby; again, Lois stands her ground. That night, Peter and Lois argue their points abortion. Written by Brian Rathjen <briguy_52748@yahoo.com>

Did the writer's have an epiphany on this one?

I've been having quite a struggle enjoying recent "Family Guy" episodes due to the fact that the plots seemed to get successively lamer. That was until I saw "Partial Terms of Endearment". Wow! This is one for my media ethics class. Seriously, the episode is really funny, inspirational and well written. In my humble opinion the Pro-Life/Pro-Choice question is a really difficult one to answer and I feel that this episode deals with the issue in a very lighthearted but somewhat respectful way. Even if you don't want to ponder on the subject and simply want to be entertained, this is by far one of the best "Family Guy" episodes that has come out in a while. Controversial, yes. Frikkin' funny? Hell yeah!
