- When human remains are discovered in the belly of a shark, Brennan and Booth are brought in to identify the missing person. Evidence suggesting the victim had been the prey of several fish directs the team's investigation to The Aquarium of the Atlantic, where a guest lecturer and notorious self-help guru preaching the healing power of the ocean has gone missing. Meanwhile, both Brennan and Booth navigate their own relationship when a marine biologist shows interest in Booth.—FOX Publicity
- A severed limb of a man is found in a killed tiger shark, which turns out to be escaped from The Aquarium of the Atlantic. The only person gone missing after attending it was guest lecturer Jazz Gunn, a miracle-healing-method quack. Booth and Bones' team go trough possible motives, methods -as the exact death cause proves surprising- and opportunities for his enemies, ranging from his former, allegedly reconciled assistant to a Russian mob baron. Meanwhile the top sleuths each date an insignificant other.—KGF Vissers
- Dr. Catherine Bryar (Rena Sofer) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association explains to Booth (David Boreanaz) and Bones (Emily Deschanel) that human remains have been found in the belly of a Tiger Shark. "Ouch," Booth says. In a strange moment, Bones flirts with a visiting Andrew while Catherine clearly has eyes for Booth. Awwwwwkward! Later, Bones examines the shin and foot bones and theorizes that the victim was not only male, but stood between 5' to 5'6". Bones points out drastically different bite marks on the bones, which Catherine says come from a variety of fish and sharks. And where do all these species coexist? The nearby aquarium.
B&B head to the aquarium and meet Marilyn (nm0516806), who says that "nothing close to a fatal accident" had occurred in the main tank. Just then, a Grouper belches out a human skull. "Now who's going to go in there to get that?" Booth asks. Cut to Bones and Hodgins (T.J. Thyne), who are wearing wet suits and scuba tanks. The two dive into the tank, communicating with Booth via radio. It's not long before Bones find the remainder of the skeleton.
Cut to Booth's office, where the agent is visited by Catherine. "I was wondering if you wanted to go out sometime," she says. Booth stutters and stammers -- before explaining he must clear Catherine as a suspect before they can date. Our boy appears smitten. Clark (Eugene Byrd), meanwhile, examines the skeleton and skull. "Someone tried to stab the victim in the face," he says. Its official: the case is homicide. Hodgins then enters with coral from the tank. A "spike in ammonia and nitrate levels" indicates something big -- "like human-being big" -- died in the tank within a six-hour period the last Friday. Neat.
Later, B&B eat lunch -- and there's another awkward moment when Bones confesses she has a "date" with Andrew. Booth explains he too has a date -- as soon as Catherine is no longer a "person of interest." Bones quickly changes the subject to a missing-person report. A self-help guru preaching the healing power of the ocean has gone missing. The man's name is Jazz Gunn (Adam Paul) -- and he didn't show up for his guest lecture at the aquarium on Saturday. Sweets (John Francis Daley) then tells them Tad Benedict (Stephen Monroe Taylor), Gunn's former assistant with whom he had a very public falling out, was at the aquarium Friday night. Hmm.
Moments later, Benedict is hauled in for questioning. He admits to wanting to "share the profits" with Gunn before the falling out -- but the two eventually made up. Benedict's theory: "Jazz loved the sea and he wanted to swim in that big tank at the aquarium." Later, Clark says he believes the stabbing weapon to be a hypodermic needle. Was something injected into the victim? B&B then pay another visit to Marilyn, tending to lethargic angel fish. She also claims to have been helping with fourth graders who were visiting the aquarium when the death supposedly occurred.
Back at the office, Booth interview fourth-grade teacher Grace Redmon (Myndy Crist), who says she had help from four mothers. Turns out 36 kids spent the night in the aquarium as a special class trip. All of them had disposable cameras, too. "They take pictures of everything," Mrs. Redmon says. So Booth and Sweets collect the cameras from the kiddies. Later, Bones and Angela (Michaela Conlin) go through the developed photos -- and run across a shot of what appears to be a man standing at the top of the tank. "That's not our victim," Bones says. "The proportions are wrong." It's probably the killer. Angela performs her computer magic on the image to reveal a fairly clear face. "I know this man," Bones exclaims. "His name is Ben (Toby Meuli). He was working at the aquarium."
Cut to Booth interviewing Ben, who apparently deposited a check for $10,000 the day AFTER the murder signed by Dimitri Vladov (Ravil Isyanov), a "big Russian mobster type." Young Ben claims he is not nearly as guilty as he looks. Later, Andrew attempts to dissuade Booth from questioning Vladov, already under surveillance by the FBI. Naturally, Booth can't be dissuaded. He calls Bones and Hodgins. "I need something that links a self-help guru to a Russian mobster," the agent says. Hodgins is quick to comply. He states Russians smuggling booze into the country typically add blue dye to liquid to make it appear to be glass cleaner. Then, an expensive filter is used to remove the blue and just leave clear vodka. And wouldn't you know it? Marilyn explained a filter had recently gone missing. "Hit him with the filter," Hodgins advises Booth.
Cut to Vladov, who says he works in importing-exporting -- mostly glass cleaner. "Did you hire Ben Marcus to steal a filter from the tank?" Booth asks. Vladov denies it -- and promptly clams up. Clark, in the meantime, has found embryonic cells from a Blue Shark. The only problem: the aquarium doesn't contain a Blue Shark. So how did the cells get there? "They weren't in the tank -- they were in the victim," says Bones, explaining these cells can be injected into the spinal cord during progressive surgery. Gunn had the same surgery. The news reveals Gunn to be a liar. The man claimed to have "healed" by swimming in the Brazilian sea. Turns out he just had an expensive surgery.
There is also evidence of a Lion Fish. Once again, though, there is no Lion Fish in the aquarium. So B&B head back to the aquarium to visit Marilyn, who points out a normal-sized tank holding a Lion Fish. The tank has a crack in it, which is consistent with the fracture on the victim. Also: the spines of a Lion Fish would leave marks quite similar to a hypodermic needle. "So this fish stabbed him in the eye?" Booth asks. Exactly. The fish is the murder weapon, Bones explains. Back at the lab, Bones theorizes Gunn must have been looking at the Lion Fish when someone SHOVED his face into the tank. Gunn was stuck multiple times by the fish -- and then dumped into the main aquarium.
B&B then discover none other than Mrs. Redmon had visited Gunn in Brazil during his annual "healing" swim. She also attended nine of the guru's seminars. Mrs. Redmon then breaks down and explains she had Fibromyalgia -- and believed Gunn when he preached about the healing power of the ocean. When she discovered her mentor was a crock, she became angry -- and "shoved his lying face" into the Lion Fish tank.
Case closed, but not the episode. Later, Bones announces she is going on her coffee date with Andrew. Booth announces he is going to see Catherine. "She's easily as pretty as I am," Bones observes. Says Booth: "Bones, you are the standard." Bones then admits Andrew isn't as handsome as Booth. The two part -- reluctantly.
