Desperate to get off of evidence room detail, Jack and Dan eagerly take the case of the stolen '89 Olds Cutlass, a truly horrible car (believe me, I've ridden in one) that was stolen from Liz's mother (Frances Fisher). Typical for Stark, he plants a piece of evidence from an old case, hoping to spice things up. Such a move sends inflames his partner, and the two detective spend much of the episode bickering like a married couple.
The two officers unwittingly stumble on an arms exchange between a cadre of Guatemalan revolutionaries and a weapons sales outfit run by two dysfunctional brothers (one of whom would rather concentrate on their front business, which is high-end kitchen fixtures).
In classic action movie fashion, "Small Rooms" boasts more flying bullets than you can shake a stick at. When our heroes aren't pinned down in a storage container under heavy machine gunfire, they're trading shots from the outside of Liz's mom's house.
The kicker is that the car was actually stolen by a pair of bored high school chicks. But just the idea of such an ugly machine taking center stage in such an episode is part of what makes it so funny.
