Woody Turns 75. Undoubtedly Writing 43rd Feature Film.

1 December 2010 7:09 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

What you're looking at below is a screenshot from the new Film Experience site (opening in a couple of weeks) in the "top tens" section... which is more like a "top 1" for each year from 1920-1979 (until I see or revisit more films from those years).

Woody Allen made my favorite films of 1977 (Annie Hall), 1979 (Manhattan) and 1985 (The Purple Rose of Cairo) and came very close to doing so in 1986 (Hannah and Her Sisters) and 1992 (Husbands and Wives). I haven't done the math but he's way up their under "most represented filmmaker" in my personal bliss lists. Other repeat #1 champs are Alfred Hitchcock, Howard Hawks and William Wyler. But you'll see those lists soon enough.

Though I've expressed concern about Woody Allen's qualitative if not quantitative decline in various posts (I've nearly hated the last two films, Whatever Works and You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger), he has »

Woody Allen has defended sexy French First Lady Carla Bruni from her critics.  The American director says working with Carla Bruni-Sarkozy on his latest film Midnight In Paris was a delight, not a problem as some reports and critics have claimed. The legendary filmmaker has slammed reports that the former supermodel, who has a small part in the movie as a museum guide, was a handful during the shoot in the French capital. "She was no problem at all," Allen said speaking at the Toronto International Film Festival. "I was delighted with her." Rumors that Bruni-Sarkozy's scenes required dozens of takes were unfounded, Allen said. He also dismissed claims that he had replaced her with another actress. "This is a hundred percent untrue," he told the Associated Press. "She's in the picture. Everything she shot is in the picture. I love her. She's great. Lea Seydoux Replacing Carla Bruni-Sarkozy in Midnight in Paris?

8 September 2010 11:08 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Is Lea Seydoux replacing Carla Bruni-Sarkozy? France's First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy might get her part cut out of Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris after 25-year-old French actress L&#233a Seydoux was hired to re-shoot all of her scenes as a precaution, reports The Daily Mail.

The 42-year-old Carla Bruni-Sarkozy caused widespread amusement in July when she took dozens of takes to perform a few simple dramatic tasks during the filming of Midnight in Paris, including walking in and out of a bread shop while saying nothing, and then carrying a small baguette while looking serious.

A spokesman for Midnight in Paris revealed that the film will be premiered at the Cannes Film Festival next May, and nobody would know exactly who is appearing in it until then.

Midnight in Paris comes to theaters in 2011 and stars Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, Marion Cotillard, Rachel McAdams, Michael Sheen, Kathy Bates, Nina Arianda, »

Hollywood lights up Paris

19 August 2010 3:00 PM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Paris -- This summer, the famous "Hollywood" sign might have been more appropriately placed in front of the Eiffel Tower. From "Gossip Girl" to the "Material Girl" to Woody Allen and Martin Scorsese, Paris' streets have been sparkling with Tinseltown star power during what typically are slow summer months in the French capital.

Although the city always has provided aesthetically pleasing backdrops and culinary and cultural delights, the Eiffel Tower and croissants alone aren't responsible for the sudden onslaught of activity. The fact that they're all on sale, however, is.

France's 20% tax rebate for foreign productions, capped at €4 million, has sparked a filming frenzy in Paris with such major directors as Clint Eastwood, Christopher Nolan, Woody Allen and Scorsese plus U.S. studios including Paramount and Universal taking advantage of both the country's technical savvy and the lower cost of shooting.

"Production has been more concentrated on Paris this year than other regions of France, »

Rumor We Love: Owen Wilson And Rachel McAdams Are Dating

12 August 2010 8:25 AM, PDT | TheFabLife | See recent TheFabLife news »

We have a soft spot for Rachel McAdams and Owen Wilson. Maybe it’s because they’ve both been subject to scrutiny after their previous high-profile relationships, or maybe it’s just because we watch Wedding Crashers pretty much every time it’s on HBO, but we can’t help but pull for these two. They’re just so darn likable! (Don’t get us started on Luke Wilson though - the combination his At&T commercials and the upcoming Middle Men is just bad news.) The pair is filming the latest Woody Allen movie, Midnight In Paris, in the French capital and has been rumored to be getting cozy offscreen. One source says “After one scene at a flea market in Saint-Ouen outside Paris, Owen was playing with her hair and being really affectionate. Even for a pair of luvvies, it was very flirtatious. Rachel McAdams and Owen Wilson were joined by director Woody Allen last night on the French set of Midnight in Paris. It was the duo's latest evening of working together on the movie, which Owen's been shooting for the past month with Marion Cotillard and Carla Bruni. Rachel joined the production just a few weeks ago following a quick Summer trip to NYC. Her stay in Europe meant she had to miss Sunday's Teen Choice Awards, but Rachel still managed to snag a win after being chosen as the Choice Movie Actress in an Action or Adventure for her role in Sherlock Holmes. It's not the biggest surprise in the world to see auteur Woody Allen filming his latest movie, Midnight In Paris, in and around Paris France, but since when did Madonna start directing movies? A Baguette, a First Lady, and a Whole Lot of Trouble for Woody Allen

30 July 2010 7:45 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

This past February, we learned that Woody Allen had decided to add a little French politics into his new film by casting Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, the first lady of France, in a role. It was a surprising choice. Though the first lady is a former supermodel and singer, she'd had no previous acting experience (save a few cinematic appearances as herself). Even she seemed surprised by Allen's choice, telling the press that she's not an actress and might be "absolutely terrible" in the film.

But Allen stuck to his decision, and Midnight in Paris went into production. Just the other day, Allen shot an outdoor scene with Bruni-Sarkozy, and the plan was simple. She walks into a grocery store, comes out with a baguette. No lines. No funny business. But what should've been an in-and-out blip seems to have turned into a directorial nightmare.
