Specialty Box Office: 'New York' and 'Red Hook' Lead Debuts; 'Sparks' Stumbles In Expansion
Two very different films set in New York -- Julie Delpy's "2 Days in New York" and Spike Lee's "Red Hook Summer" -- led the limited debuts this weekend, each finding so-so averages just north of $10,000. They led an overall strong specialty box office, which saw continued success from films like "Celeste and Jesse Forever," "Killer Joe," "Beasts of the Southern Wild" and "The Queen of Versailles." However, Fox Searchlight saw its aggressive expansion of "Ruby Sparks" stumble, making it clear they most definitely don't have another "Little Miss Sunshine" on their hands with the Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris-directed film. The Playlist's 15 Most Anticipated Films Of The 2012 Tribeca Film Festival

This year's Tribeca Film Festival carries one of its strongest line-ups in years. In addition to films from Cannes, Venice, Toronto, Sundance and Berlin circuit, there's also a wealth of U.S. premieres or lesser-known festival movies in the line-up that look just as promising this time around; after a relatively weak SXSW, it looks like the East Coast is getting some of the good stuff.

Magnolia Acquires ’2 Days In New York:’ Sundance
Park City, Ut – The Wagner/Cuban Company’s Magnolia Pictures announced today they have acquired North American rights to 2 Days In New York, a delightful and sophisticated follow-up to her 2007 hit, 2 Days in Paris. 2 Days In New York stars Delpy, Chris Rock, Delpy’s real life father Albert Delpy, and was produced by Christophe Mazodier. A witty comedy about relationships, art, and clashing cultures, 2 Days In New York picks up again with Marion (Delpy), now living in New York City with her attentive boyfriend Mingus (Rock), each with a child from a previous relationship. Their idyllic lifestyle is turned upside-down when Marion’s eccentric father comes to stay for a few days, along with Marion’s oversexed sister (Alexia Landeau) and her sleazy boyfriend (Alex Nahon)—and proceed to drive Mingus absolutely crazy. Sundance Institute announced today the films selected to screen in the out-of-competition Premieres and Documentary Premieres sections of the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. The Festival will be held January 19 through 29 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah. The complete list of films is available at www.sundance.org/festival.

John Cooper, Director of the Sundance Film Festival, said, “The fact that most of the Premieres have been produced completely independently further underscores the resourcefulness and tenacity of filmmakers in this climate.
