Interesting and informative making of documentary
7 November 2012 | by (The Last New Jersey Drive-In on the Left) – See all my reviews

This nifty little doc offers an illuminating portrait on the making of the cool sci-fi/horror movie "Splice." Director Vincenzo Natali reveals that he has wanted to make this particular picture for ten years, he had a hard time pitching the movie to various studios, and his goal with this film was to push the genre forward. Co-writer Doug Taylor describes the story as a metaphor for dysfunctional parenting about people behaving atrociously to their monster. Moreover, we also see Abigail Chu and Delphine Chaneac training together for the challenging role of Drean (Natali insisted on using real actresses over CGI because of the subtle nuances human beings bring to the table), Natali working meticulously with the cast and crew, wires being used to make Dren leap around, and the filming of several scenes that include Ginger and Fred tearing each other to pieces, the dance sequence, the birth of Dren, and the climax with Dren going on a rampage. Naturally, there are loads of neat clips from the movie and lots of fascinating behind-the-scenes footage. Worth a watch for fans of the film.
