Trivia

General Motors provided the motor vehicles for the series during the first 4 seasons - beginning in Season 5 the contract with GM was canceled since two of the leading roles (Chin Ho and McGarrett) drove vintage Ford vehicles (Chin with a 1966 Mustang coupe and McGarrett with a 1974 Mercury Marquis Brougham). This also affected the Honolulu P.D. squads used throughout the series - the Impala 9C1 after the 2013 model year (based on the previous 1996-2013 model sold as the Impala Limited, which is scheduled to be phased out in 2016) is only sold to fleets or rental car agencies. Also, the 2011-present Chevrolet Caprice PPV (which is the replacement for the Impala 9C1) is not sold to the general public - hence the production crew using the Impala for the squads. See more »

Goofs

The dancers in the opening credits are actually performing native French Tahitian "'O 'tea tamuré" dance (female in traditional Tahitian grass skirt with hips rapidly moving to fast drumming in a figure 8) and the male performing the traditional "danse du feu", or fire dance, and have no relation whatsoever to traditional native Hawaii dances. The hula dance, the traditional native Hawaiian dance, does not feature drums, nor grass skirts, nor rapid hip movements; its costume is made of medium length, green "ti" leaves and its main focus is on the dancers' hands, by which they tell a story. No percussion for Hawaiian hula, but their music is the unmistakable ukulele sound. See more »

Shows Promise but...
20 September 2010 | by (New Jersey) – See all my reviews

Let's start with arguably the best and most recognized TV score of all time. If the producers want to use the original theme song, then why shorten it? It reminded me of the truncated TV tunes of re-runs in syndication.

Now for the pilot episode. I thought it odd that Hawaii 5-0 would open with a scene in South Korea. It's like stumbling out of bed in the morning not exactly sure what you're going to do that day.

There are also seemed to be to much gun play and not enough acting. The dialog and some of the background setup (Danno's family situation, for example) was a bit too cliché. Some of the personal background could be better developed over time rather than cramming it into one episode while chasing the bad guys.

The overall storyline for the pilot was excellent, though. It gave background to 5-0's beginnings and it maintained a certain consistency and plausibility with TOS while adding the dimension of McGarrett and his father.

Some of the dialog resulted in an approving chuckle from me.

The episode began to gel about 2/3 in and by the end of the show, I felt comfortable with the main characters and looked forward to the next chapter.
