Review: 'Boardwalk Empire' - 'What Jesus Said'

21 September 2014 7:00 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

A review of tonight's "Boardwalk Empire" coming up just as soon as my fortune wafts down from Episcopalian Heaven... "Does she know what you are?" -Fern "She knew what I was." -Chalky On "Boardwalk Empire," Nucky and Chalky have never exactly been equals, simply because the racial politics of the time wouldn't allow for that. But they were presented as each other's opposite number on the white and black sides of town, Chalky was Nucky's last ally standing when Gyp Rosetti's army invaded, and the two characters were more or less treated as co-leads last season. Outside forces pushed them together and pulled them apart, but they liked each other, and were alike in many ways — in particular in how each pulled himself up from poverty to a position in high society, right alongside all the swells whose errands they used to run. Both are in sketchier circumstances at this stage of the final season, »

A Most Violent Year Trailer: Spend New Year’s With Llewyn Davis and Jessica Chastain’s Bangs

18 September 2014 11:30 AM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Do you want to do something different with New Year's Eve this year? Forget the noisemakers, party hats, and Prosecco (Oh, you actually do Champagne? Well, sorry, Mr. Rockefeller) and go see a crime drama starring Llewyn Davis and Jessica Chastain with bangs! All Is Lost's J.C. Chandor (no relation to Jc Chasez) directs Chastain and Oscar Isaac in A Most Violent Year, a thriller about an immigrant and his family in New York City during the winter of 1981 (one of the most violent years in NYC's history). The film opens on December 31, so if you hear people talking, they're probably just counting down. »

It's New Year's Eve for "A Most Violent Year"

18 September 2014 10:40 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

It's the dread December 31st just-barely-Oscar-qualifying release for Jc Chandor's curiosity A Most Violent Year. We had seen virtually nothing until today but now the poster, the teaser, a new website newyorkcity1981.com and the release date. We hear the acting is topnotch but then with that cast (Oscar Isaac, Jessica Chastain, Albert Brooks, David Oyelowo,  Catalina Sandino Moreno, Alessandro Nivola, Christopher Abbott, Elizabeth Marvel, etcetera), why wouldn't it be?

Here's the teaser. Let us hope releasing a movie called that on New Year's Eve isn't a horrific omen for the good health of 2015.

Watch: Trailer For Andrey Zvyagintsev's Acclaimed Cannes Winner 'Leviathan'

29 August 2014 9:02 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

You may not be able to pronounce the name Andrey Zvyagintsev, but this spring you likely saw that flurry of consonants and vowels across Twitter or in the blogosphere. The director's epic "Leviathan" was the big talk of the Cannes Film Festival, and one many thought would take the Palme d'Or. Instead, it had to settle on the screenplay prize, but if the buzz is anything to go by, this is a movie you need to put high on your watch list. Starring Alexey Serebryakov, Elena Lyadova, Vladimir Vdovitchenkov, Roman Madyanov, Anna Ukolova, Alexey Rozin and Sergey Pokhadaev, the movie is set in a small town in which a property owner and the mayor battle over a parcel of land, in a story inspired by the Biblical tale of Job. But there's much more, as it comments on corruption in Russia, and our A-grade review calls the movie "not just masterful but also hugely important. »

"That exploded very big. The haircut heard around the planet. We did it three days ago and it got around fast. I can’t stop touching it. I am so obsessed with it," she told Women's Health for their September cover.

Chaplin or The Weight of Myth

By Mireille Latil-Le-Dantec. Originally published in Cinématographe, no. 35, February 1978 in an issue with a Chaplin dossier.

Translation by Ted Fendt. Thanks to Marie-Pierre Duhamel.

The Chaplinesque Quest

The overbearing weight of interpretative studies devoted to Chaplin makes any pretension to some "fresh look" at a universe already studied from every angle seem absurd from the outset. At least, on the occasion of the homages currently being made in theaters to the little man who would become so big, a few fragmentary re-viewings more modestly allow for the rediscovery of the thematic unity of this body of work and the inanity of any artificial divide between the "excellent" Charlie films and the "mediocre" Chaplin films – a divide corresponding, of course, to the event which his art was not supposed to have survived: the appearance of those talkies that – in the excellent company of Eisenstein, Pudovkin, René Clair and many others – he »

In honor of the 25th anniversary of the iconic romantic comedy, we remember the 25 best quotes!

Behold, 25 of our favorite When Harry Met Sally quotes!

1. "I love that you get cold when it's 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you're looking at me like I'm nuts. I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it's not because I'm lonely, and it's not because it's New Year's Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible." -Harry's epic declaration »
