"It Stopped Being Fun," the Biggest Reason Steven Soderbergh Quit the Movies

7 July 2014 9:58 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

In a new interview with Steven Soderbergh at Esquire, the director of the upcoming Cinemax television show "The Knick" discussed the "biggest reason" he got out of movies, which was, "It stopped being fun." The fact that it became a story at all is because of Matt Damon. He remembered verbatim a drunk conversation we had in Chicago and repeated it to USA Today. I'd talked about it before and nobody gave a sh*t. It wasn't until Matt said that I had a plan to get out. The bottom line when people talk about all the reasons, you know the biggest reasonc It stopped being fun. It just stopped being fun. It really wasn't. That's a big deal to me. It may sound like "Why do you have to have fun to go to workc" I don't know. I like to be in a good mood. The ratio of »

Five Things I Learned from 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' (Review And Roundup, Video)

2 July 2014 1:57 PM, PDT | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Going into last week's Fox screening of 3D sequel "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," I was both anticipating and skeptical. Why? Well, the initial series reboot "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" by writer-producers Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver, as executed by director Rupert Wyatt, Andy Serkis as ape leader Caesar, and Joe Letteri's Weta Digital was so superb that the sequel was likely to be a comedown. Back on board were Weta and Serkis, but Fox co-chairman Tom Rothman no longer runs the studio, Wyatt didn't stay for the sequel, Jaffa and Silver were reluctantly back-stepped to producers, with action writer Mark Bomback ("Live Free and Die Hard," "The Wolverine") and Scott Z. Burns ("Contagion") taking over the screenplay. Fox hiring director Matt Reeves was good news, as I had admired his thoughtful work on horror remake "Let Me In."  I walked out of the screening elated. »

DVD Review: 'Flu'

30 June 2014 1:37 PM, PDT | CineVue | See recent CineVue news »

★★★☆☆It's hard to describe Kim Sung-su's epidemic thriller - out now on DVD here in the UK - without mentioning other well-known entries in the sub-genre. Outbreak (1995) and Steven Soderbergh's skin-crawling Contagion (2011) are obvious touchstones for this action-packed tale of a lethal infection running rampant in urban South Korea. Whereas western outings have updated the classic disaster movie formula, Flu (2013) distinguishes itself by embracing a slightly more sci-fi bent with its near-future setting and dystopian milieu. It makes for gripping viewing, despite being hampered by a wealth of ridiculous plot contrivances and a tone so erratic it can feel like two separate movies.

The Academy Invites 271 New Members for 2014

26 June 2014 12:44 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong'o among 271 Academy invitees

Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years. »

Josh Hutcherson, Lupita Nyong'o, Pharrell and 268 others invited to join the Academy

26 June 2014 11:50 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn. »

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has invited 271 individuals to become members, with the list reflecting the org’s determination to bring more diversity to its ranks.
