After nothing came out of the David Slade / Brad Kane version of the film, Joe Carnahan stepped in, and pitched his vision; gritty 70s set crime thriller. 20th Century Fox was enthusiastic about that, but they ran out of time, and the rights to Daredevil reverted back to Marvel.
The Film was being done by 20th Century Fox, but had to release a film by 2013 according to their contract with Marvel Entertainment or the rights would go back to Marvel. Fox couldn't reach the goal in time and the rights went back to Marvel where they immediately began work on making the Netflix show to tie into their Marvel Cinamatic Universe
When the project was still at FOX in 2012, David Slade was developing the project with writer Brad Kane, who was drawing inspiration from Sidney Lumet. The script was said to be based on the popular Daredevil storyline Born Again by Frank Miller. Appearances by Typhoid Mary and the Purple Man were teased by Kane on Twitter.
