north American progressive TV show
28 February 2016 | by See all my reviews

As a french ( please don't call this TV show a 'french TV show' this is a Canadian TV show in Canadian french), I think this is moderately funny : some "gag" are reused by the lazy author word for word but said by other character.. I'm not against reusing material but word for word... The family is really focused on pro environmentalist, feminist issue and is an upper class family where money is no problem ( even though they sometimes complain about some bills). Both parents aren't married and educate their children with post hippie psychology : children are allowed to talk to parents and behave badly and are even rewarded when they fail exams ( because you know the poor kids failed their exam so it's bad for their self confidence and all that kind of crap). The political and moral view of the show is sometimes really boring. Anne Dorval is well known in France for her progressive views and seems to think she represents the opinion of the whole Quebec while at some talk show in France and get upset when someone points out she might not... Other than that the text of the little kid "Zach" is sometimes really funny, specially to frenchs as words used by french-Canadian are not use in the same context as "real" french. The gags are really unequal in quality. You go from really predictable to mildly funny. I would advise you to only watch a couple of episodes at a time since the situations are really repetitive. Text said by Thomas and Oliver is sometimes not really credible as kids their age wouldn't obviously say things they say. It's not really a sitcom as you get exterior shots, it's more like the US Show "the middle" in the way it's produced (but cheaper), which is a good thing. Watching the whole 8 seasons I now realize french-Canadian use lots of English even when french expression exist, worse, they use literal translation of English expression to french. That's OK as they are just a handful of guys in a sea of English speakers but they really shouldn't criticized french who just use a few English words..
