17 December 2012 6:43 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

"This is either the start of something cool, or the beginning of the end." Let's kick things off with an Aussie surfing drama to start out the week. Our friends at Twitch have found a trailer for another thrilling surfer movie about two brothers in the 1970s - called Drift. The film stars Myles Pollard and Xavier Samuel as the brothers, along with Sam Worthington along for the ride as "traveling bohemian surf photographer and filmmaker Jb". We've seen a number of surfer films recently, with Soul Surfer and Chasing Mavericks, but none of them can really live up to Point Break or Big Wednesday. The final shot in this is kind of epic. Here's the first trailer for Morgan O'Neill & Ben Nott's Drift, found on Twitch (via The Film Stage): In the 70s, two brothers Andy & Jimmy (Myles Pollard & Xavier Samuel) battle killer waves, conservative society and »

'Atlas,' Three Other New Movies in Line for Weak Openings

25 October 2012 4:41 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

The final weekend of October delivers four new nationwide releases, though none of them appear to have much potential. Without any likely breakouts and with a steep drop on the way for Paranormal Activity 4 there is a good chance that Argo takes first place in its third weekend.Opening at 2,008 locations, Cloud Atlas has the most buzz among cinephiles, though its commercial prospects aren't looking great. On the surface, the movie has a strong box office pedigree: Tom Hanks is one of the highest-grossing movie stars ever, and the Wachowski siblings are responsible for the very successful Matrix trilogy. Unfortunately, Larry Crowne and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close proved last year that audiences won't show up to everything Hanks does, and the Wachowski brand was hurt by Speed Racer and those baffling Matrix sequels. The movie itself is one of the toughest sells in recent memory. Since there are six »

Nicolas Cage to Star in Left Behind Reboot

19 October 2012 2:04 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

In the same week that we learned about an Ernest reboot, we've now been given an even more appropriate sign of the impending apocalypse: the Left Behind series is also getting a reboot. What's even weirder is the fact that Nicolas Cage is reportedly in talks to headline the film. (Okay... maybe that's not so weird.) Based on the popular series of Christian books by Tim Lahaye and Jerry Jenkins, the original Left Behind trilogy starred former Growing Pains heartthrob Kirk Cameron in the lead role. The story revolves around survivors left behind on Earth after The Rapture who are forced to take on the Anti-Christ. But will Cage be playing the Kirk Cameron role or the Anti-Christ? Hopefully the latter. According to Variety, the project is being set up by Paul Lalonde, former head of St. Catharines-based production company Cloud Ten Pictures. Cloud Ten produced the previous trilogy, so »

<< Continued from October 2012 PreviewOct. 19 - 'Paranormal Activity 4' Vs. The last movie set a new October opening weekend record last year with $52.6 million, on its way to $104 million (just a bit off from the series high of $107.9 million). Paranormal Activity 4 promises more of the same scares, and Paramount has a knack for marketing this particular franchise. It is important to remember, though, that many franchises start to see declining grosses by the fourth chapter*Saw, for example, fell 21 percent from three to four*and the same fate may be inevitable for Paranormal Activity. The only movie brave enough to face Paranormal Activity 4 is Alex Cross, which stars Tyler Perry as the titular detective. Cross was previously portrayed by Morgan Freeman in 1997's »

Box office report: 'Expendables 2' shoots to the top with $28.8 million, but newcomers don't 'Sparkle'

Four weeks after the shootings in Aurora, Colo., the box office remains in a relative slump — despite performing over 20 percent better than the same weekends in 2011 and 2010.

According to industry consulting firm Screen Engine, 17 percent of moviegoers are still reluctant to head to the theater following the shooting. While that number has dropped from the 21 percent who claimed they were reluctant one week after the shooting, it’s still telling — and discouraging — for Hollywood. Fortunately, moviegoers have a lot of options to choose from. When the top seven movies at the box office all earn over $10 million, it’s clear »

'American Idol' Contestants in Movies

Jordin Sparks isn't the first "American Idol" star to step away from the reality boob tube and give Hollywood a go, and she won't be the last. Her loosely biographical movie "Sparkle" — also featuring the late Whitney Houston, Mike Epps and Cee-Lo Green — is but the latest instance of an "Idol" star getting a close-up on the big screen.

The movie successes of Sparks' predecessors in "Idol" alumni-hood have been a mixed bag of total wins and, well, sheer embarrassment. So, how will the season six-winning songstress' flick fare?

Let's compare "Idol" in Hollywood notes to find out.

Jennifer Hudson

While Season 3's winner (Fantasia Barrino) has had very little luck in the Hollywood spotlight, its the seventh-placer who serves as the lodestar example of an "Idol" alum making movie magic happen for herself. In 2006, she starred in the movie musical "Dreamgirls" and took home Hollywood's highest honor, an Academy Award, »
