Writer Says 'The Legend Of Conan' Will Be Like " 'Unforgiven' With A Sword-Wielding Barbarian"

27 May 2015 10:45 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Arnold Schwarzenegger is more than happy to do a cinematic nostalgia tour. This summer he reboots in "Terminator Genisys," "Twins" sequel "Triplets" is in development, and in case you forgot, there's "The Legend Of Conan." At one point, it was promised that the movie would shoot before the end of 2013, and while that didn't happen, there are big plans with hopes for a new trilogy (obviously). Of course, Arnie is quite a bit older than he was in 1982 when "Conan The Barbarian" dropped, but the plan is to ignore the subsequent films, and for "The Legend Of Conan" to be straight up sequel. And writer Chris Morgan ("Fast Five," "Furious 6," "Furious 7") has some grand aspirations. "Our tone is a logical extension of the character established in the ’82 film…but 30 years later," he told The Arnold Fans. "When we meet him again, Conan has been many things over the course of his life — a. »

Star Trek 3: Simon Pegg Says Studio Feared the Original Script Was “Too Star Trek-y”

20 May 2015 10:18 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Actor/writer Simon Pegg dropped some truth bombs yesterday about nerd culture, and while some were taken aback by his comments (which only served to reinforce his thinking), many (myself included) found them refreshingly honest. But just because Pegg is able to think critically about his passions doesn’t mean he’s forsaking them entirely. It’s quite the opposite, as he’s currently co-writing the screenplay for Star Trek 3, which is likely titled Star Trek Beyond. Paramount was always going to make some changes on this next Trek film given that J.J. Abrams was departing the director’s chair for a galaxy far, far away, and it’s taken them a bit to get the film to a place that they’re comfortable with. Roberto Orci, who co-wrote and co-produced the first two Trek movies, was initially in line to direct Star Trek 3 and was overseeing the writing of the script. »

"Star Trek 3" To Be Less "Star Trek-y"

20 May 2015 5:18 AM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Those hoping "Star Trek Beyond," the upcoming third film in the rebooted "Star Trek" franchise, would get back to its roots should be prepared for some disappointment.

Rather than going the "Skyfall" route of re-introducing key elements of the franchise that the rebooted franchise had avoided so far, a new interview with the film's co-writer and actor Simon Pegg has revealed that the next film will move even further away from the "Star Trek" mold than the two previous J.J. Abrams films.

Speaking with Radio Times (via The Guardian), Pegg discussed how he and fellow scribe Doug Jung were brought onboard to work on the script after the departure of original co-scribe and potential director Roberto Orci:

"They had a script for Star Trek that wasn't really working for them. I think the studio was worried that it might have been a little too Star Trek-y."

Part of the problem is Marvel Studios. »

Dwayne Johnson Returning For Furious 8

18 May 2015 6:48 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Despite ending up a little worse for wear during this year’s Furious 7, Hobbs is ready to ride again for the recently greenlit Furious 8, actor Dwayne Johnson has confirmed.

During a Q&A for his upcoming summer tentpole San Andreas, Johnson, one of the most bankable actors working in Hollywood today, was asked whether or not he would be reprising his role in the next Fast & Furious entry, which will have to retool the franchise slightly now that stalwart Brian O’Conner (the late, lamented Paul Walker) has been given a touching send-off. Johnson replied, “Of course. It can’t go on without Hobbs.”

Well, there you have it. News of Johnson’s enthusiasm for Furious 8 surely comes as a relief to fans, given that Hobbs has secured a place as one of the franchise’s most popular characters since first appearing in Fast Five. Universal is »

The Rock Confirms "Furious 8" Return

17 May 2015 9:18 AM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Though much of the cast has signed on for multiple films, Dwayne 'The Rock Johnson's involvement in the "Fast and Furious" franchise has always been on a film-by-film basis. Coming into the series with "Fast Five," Johnson's been able to do three films now thanks to the production's schedule being able to adjust to him.

Of course, the actor is always busy and in demand which means it's not a certain thing that he'll be back for each new sequel. Today though, out doing promotional rounds for the disaster epic "San Andreas," the actor has confirmed that he'll be stepping back into the role of federal agent Luke Hobbs for the next entry.

Asked directly if Hobbs will appear in "Furious 8," Johnson responded to Collider: "Of course. It can’t go on without Hobbs." Johnson was also asked about the possibility of a spin-off film that would focus on his character. »

It looks like the Fast and Furious cast won't leave without saying goodbye, after all: Vin Diesel confirmed onstage at CinemaCon Thursday that, thanks to Furious 7 making a busload of money (that bus being perched precariously over a cliff), the long-promised Furious 8 is indeed happening. It even has a release date: April 14, 2017. That continues the every-two-years trend the series has followed since Fast Five — Dom Toretto lives his life a quarter-decade at a time. »

Strong Debut on Disc Chart for ‘Batman Vs. Robin’

22 April 2015 6:50 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Warner’s direct-to-video “Batman Vs. Robin” was the best-selling newcomer the week ending April 19, bowing at No. 1 on Nielsen VideoScan’s Blu-ray Disc sales chart.

But in overall disc sales, the animated “DC Universe Original Movie” was trumped by another Warner title, “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” which regained the top spot on Nielsen’s First Alert chart after spending two weeks at No. 2.

“Interstellar,” the Paramount sci-fi epic that occupied the No. 1 spot for the last two weeks, slipped to No. 3 on First Alert.

Rounding out the top five on the overall disc sales chart: Walt Disney’s “Big Hero 6,” repeating at No. 4, and 20th Century Fox’s “The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death,” a horror sequel that bowed at No. 5.

Star Trek 3 May Be Titled Star Trek Beyond

22 April 2015 8:32 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

After a protracted development period, Star Trek 3 is finally moving full steam ahead, with Fast Five helmer Justin Lin behind the camera and series star Simon Pegg penning the script alongside Doug Jung, and today brings a possible title for the anticipated threequel.

According to TrekMovie.com (via /Film), it’s likely that the film, which will see the crew of the starship Enterprise into the deeper reaches of space on a five-year mission of exploration and discovery, is titled Star Trek Beyond. The site purportedly “has it on good authority” that the title is legitimate and has learned that Star Trek Beyond has been registered with the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), a typical step that a studio takes once a title has been locked in.

Pegg: "Star Trek 3" Gets An Original Villain

21 April 2015 10:22 AM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Simon Pegg is currently had at work with Doug Jung on the screenplay for the third "Star Trek" film which is slated to begin production in June.

As previously reported, Idris Elba is in talks to play the villain of the film and Pegg tells MTV that the plan is to avoid the 'Into Darkness' Khan problem and have Elba to play an original character this time out:

"It will be [an original character], yes. This is the five-year mission now, we're out there. We don't always have to keep bumping into the same people… So we're gonna try and reflect that in the movie."

Pegg goes on to say that the role is a "kick ass" one. He also says the hope is the new film will bring back the spirit of the show - something not really seen in the two rebooted movies outside of moments in the first film:

Furious 7 Box Office Crosses $1 Billion Worldwide in Record Time

17 April 2015 2:40 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

It’s still baffling to me that a film franchise that began in 2001 with a fairly forgettable movie about cars is now seven films deep and stronger than ever. Not only that, but its latest installment—Furious 7—is one of the highest grossing films of all time. And it’s only been in theaters for 17 days. Universal Pictures announced today that with Friday’s grosses included, director James Wan’s Los Angeles-centric sequel will cross the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office. It is now the fastest film to ever achieve that benchmark, as well as Universal’s first movie to ever reach $1 billion in initial release. Those are some crazy statistics. I thought it was a mostly Ok movie; it’s better than the forgettable Fast & Furious 6 but not as fun as Fast Five, though given the circumstances it's a miracle it works this well, and »
