19 August 2014 3:39 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

As Warner Bros. continues its slow-but-steady-but-really-quite-fast expansion of the DC cinematic universe, rumors have been swirling that Dwayne Johnson will star in an adaptation of Shazam, playing a character who is confusingly sometimes known as Captain Marvel, which is also the name of a character in the Marvel universe. (Yes, there have been lawsuits.) Johnson himself stoked those rumors last month, and today he apparently confirmed his involvement in the movie. However, according to The Associated Press, Johnson might not be playing the lead–the AP claims that he “has yet to decide” whether he’s playing the superhero or his greatest enemy, »

Who is Iggy Azalea playing in 'Fast & Furious 7'?

30 July 2014 6:06 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Vin Diesel is currently hitting the publicity trail for Guardians of the Galaxy, the movie where he finally plays a talking space tree—but that doesn’t mean he’s forgotten about his roots, because the only thing that really matters in this life is family because without a family a man doesn’t have a code, vroom vroom! Thus, during an interview with France’s Skyrock FM, Diesel revealed a bit of casting news for Fast & Furious 7, which is unquestionably the most important sevenquel coming out in 2015.

Diesel was asked which song he would prefer to dance to: Jason Derulo’s “Wiggle, »

The Rock: Always The Rocksmaid, Never The Rocksgroom

22 July 2014 7:05 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

This Friday will see the release of The Rock’s (None of this Dwayne Johnson nonsense, he’s The Rock) newest action tentpole Hercules, with him playing the historic hero. You’ve probably already made up your mind if you’re going to see this film or not, you’re not anxiously waiting on the fence. You probably haven’t given a second thought to Hercules. But I have, and for the first time in a long time, I’m worried about The Rock.

When you really stop to think about it, The Rock has built a career becoming one of the most unlikely box office superstars. In 2013 Forbes named him the highest grossing actor of the year with his films that year bringing in $1.3 billion. But I say box office superstar with a caveat: He only smashes numbers when he’s part of an ensemble. Put the guy in »

Through a Timeline Darkly: Pop Culture and Community

21 July 2014 4:45 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Community has become one of the icons of pop culture skewering in the modern age. Ask anyone online, not in person of course, about the phrase Six Seasons And A Movie and they can place it at the NBC sitcom’s feet, and the vocal fans that used it as an online mantra to see the show reach the goals jokingly mentioned in a season 2 clip show episode with regards to a one season show called The Cape that once aired on the network.

Such is the way that Community integrates itself in the nerdiest areas of the internet, and takes pot-shots at other elements in the zeitgeist, turning them into something entirely brilliant within the show and making one find it hard to watch any attempts at a trope or genre straight ever again. Such examples of Community at its best pop-culture and film/tv skewering are:

'Classic Universal Monsters' Relaunch Coming from 'Spider-Man' and 'Fast & Furious' Writers

16 July 2014 3:24 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Universal Pictures has brought on Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan to develop a widespread cinematic universe that will connect a number of the studio's classic monster franchises, such as Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, The Wolf Man and many more.

It isn't clear yet if Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek, Transformers, The Amazing Spider-Man 2) and Chris Morgan (Fast Five, Fast & Furious 6, Fast & Furious 7) will write the projects themselves, but the filmmakers will reportedly start scouring for talent soon to bring this massive initiative to life.

The studio has pulled from its extensive library for individual titles such as The Mummy, Van Helsing, The Wolfman and this fall's Dracula Untold, but this is the first time Universal wants to create a universe with all of the characters under the same cinematic roof.

The first project to launch this endeavor will be the Untitled Mummy Reboot, which is already »

The Guys Behind 'The Mummy' And 'Fast Five' Will Reboot & "Unify" Universal's Classic Movie Monsters Ala Marvel's McU

16 July 2014 1:33 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

In the era of reboots and remakes, if an attempt to bring back a franchise fails, it's cool because you can just try again a few years later. Of even if it was successful, you can still reboot it, even if the next incarnation is a total disappointment (see "The Amazing Spider-Man"). And so it goes with Universal, who four years ago dropped the troubled "Wolfman" into theatres and watched it sink like a stone. So they're giving it another kick at the can and have hired two dudes who know how to make blockbusters of varying quality, but consistent box office. Alex Kurtzman ("Star Trek," the aforementioned Spidey series) and Chris Morgan ("Fast Five") have been tapped to over Universal's monster movie titles, in something that sounds suspiciously like they're going to create a comic-book world style Marvel-verse. Deadline reports that the pair have "begun the meetings to put »

The Dusty VHS Corner: Pm Entertainment

13 July 2014 10:26 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

In the latest edition of The Dusty VHS Corner, Tom Jolliffe digs out a trio of actioners from Pm Entertainment…

Between 1989 and 2002, Pm Entertainment was a strong force in the straight to video action arena. Founded by directors Joseph Merhi and Richard Pepin, they set about trying to deliver big thrills on low budgets. At some stages, largely during a peak period in the mid-90’s, they managed to do that.

Certain stars would become synonymous with the company, and they largely worked with the same ethos as other bigger companies and action specialists, in that you need to have a name attached to sell your picture. Pm worked, sometimes repeatedly, with a slew of video action stars such as Gary Daniels, Don “The Dragon” Wilson, Cynthia Rothrock, Jack Scalia and Jeff Wincott.

Pm Entertainment would also work largely out of La. Whilst other rival companies decided Canada or Eastern »

It’s Hard Out Here for an Original Franchise: ‘Pacific Rim’’s Plight

6 July 2014 6:01 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Not two weeks ago, famed auteur and Pacific Rim director Guillermo Del Toro set the internet ablaze when he announced the confirmation of a follow up to his 2013 robots vs. monsters film Pacific Rim and dated Pacific Rim 2 for April 7, 2017. The biggest surprise wasn’t the official announcement of the sequel though, it was the announcement of the comics and animated series that would be produced leading up to 2017: They are using all their weapons at their disposal and are really trying to make this franchise stick. They’re in for a tough time though, as there’s no question it’s never been harder to get an original franchise made in today’s day and age of reboots/sequels of pre-existing properties. But maybe Guillermo Del Toro realizes the tagline of Pacific Rim holds some truth. “To fight monsters we created monsters” – or in this case, “to fight franchises, »

Best Films Set In Rio De Janiero

The World Cup, as always, has been a real love affair, unless you are an England or Spain fan and have watched your country crash out in the first round. Pre-World Cup, people were familiar with Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo but thanks to the numerous locations in use (http://www.bet365.com/news/en/betting/ – to find stadium guides) we are now familiar with places as far reaching as Manaus, in the Amazon.

Hopefully this increased exposure will open up the film industry in Brazil and stop making it so Rio biased – most films involving Brazil are set in Rio. However, there are still some phenomenal films to have been set in Rio, here a few below.

Next 'Bourne' Sequel Moved To July 2016

19 June 2014 12:59 AM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

The next sequel in the Bourne franchise won't hit theaters until 2016. The fifth installment was originally set to be released on August 14, 2015.

Justin Lin (Fast Five) is set to direct the sequel, with Jeremy Renner returning as Aaron Cross. Though Matt Damon mentioned that he was open to returning to the franchise, chances are he won't be reprising his signature role. The actor said he would consider reprising his role if director Paul Greengrass returned–he's not.

“I've always been open to it if Paul Greengrass is the director. We've just never been able to come up with a story. So if any of your viewers have a story, please call Universal and submit it. It felt like such a good way to end it the last time... But having said that, I love that character and I'd love to see what happened to him.”
