Weekend Box Office: Star Trek Turns 50, Earns 60 (Million)

24 July 2016 5:17 PM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

The thirteenth chapter in Paramount’s Star Trek cinematic franchise –Star Trek: Beyond- blasted off across North America movie screens this weekend, where it easily commanded the number one spot. The thriller Lights Out scared up a great debut in third while Ice Age: Collision Course melted in fifth place.

The $185 million Star Trek: Beyond opened on 3,928 screens where it earned a prosperous $59.6 million. The opening for the acclaimed entry -released to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the original Star Trek television series- was the third-best opening for a live-action film this summer. Justin Lin (Fast Five, Furious Six) took over directing duties from J.J. Abrams, who stayed on as a producer for Beyond.

While the opening for Beyond was a solid one, it was somewhat lower than the previous two entries in the series. It was 15% lower than 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness, which opened to »

‘Star Trek Beyond’ Director Justin Lin Finds the Human in the Epic

22 July 2016 8:15 AM, PDT | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Justin Lin didn’t realize he was a Trekkie until J.J. Abrams called him out of the blue. Between a Thursday phone call and what ended up a Monday meeting, Lin had dinner with his family, who had emigrated from Taiwan to run an Anaheim grocery store when he was 8 years old. That’s when it hit him that between age 8 and 18 he had grown up with Gene Roddenberry’s “Star Trek” TV series. It was embedded deep inside him.

Lin had turned away from directing the seventh installment of the “Fast and Furious” franchise, which grew from 3-6 with worldwide grosses of $158 million for “Tokyo Drift,” $363 million for “Fast & Furious” and $626 million for “Fast Five” to $789 million for “Fast & Furious 6.” (James Wan continued the trajectory when the seventh film earned $1.52 billion.) He was producing and directing TV (“Community,” the “Scorpion” pilot and “True Detective”) and exploring production in China, »

The Preview Reel: Trekking Through the Ice Age

21 July 2016 2:14 PM, PDT | CinemaNerdz | See recent CinemaNerdz news »

Welcome to another “Preview Reel” column, where we look at the week’s upcoming wide release movies. This week sees a couple of Hollywood’s most bankable franchises debut along with a new James Wan produced horror flick. Star Trek Beyond continues the voyages of the Starship Enterprise, Manny and the gang return in Ice Age: Collision Course, and a supernatural being terrifies in the dark in Lights Out. There’s a lot to choose from, so let’s break them down to see if any of them are worth your time.

  Star Trek Beyond

What we are excited about:

The franchise has been on a hot streak ever since it was rebooted by J.J. Abrams in 2009. Abrams was able to inject new life into the aging franchise because of his kinetic directing style and terrific young cast. The whole cast is back, and while Abrams is only producing this time, »

Movie Review – Star Trek Beyond (2016)

21 July 2016 4:08 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Star Trek Beyond, 2016.

Directed by Justin Lin.

Starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Idris Elba, and Sofia Boutella.

Synopsis:

The USS Enterprise crew respond to a deceitful distress call and are divided on a barren planet. Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and his crew must reunite to stop Krall’s (Idris Elba) vengeful plan.

Star Trek Beyond begins in the third year of the Enterprise’s five-year mission to “boldly go where no one has gone before”, and Kirk is going through another existential crisis: he’s bored, he reminds himself and others that his initial enrollment at the academy grew from a quasi-joke, and he believes that Spock (Zachary Quinto) would make a formidable captain by contrast. Putting aside this tiresome plot-thread, which, quite frankly, adds very little tension or drama to the story, the film does introduce the personal lives of the crew, »

Fast 8 Photo Sends Dwayne Johnson's Hobbs to Prison

12 July 2016 6:48 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Ever since production started on Fast and Furious 8, we've been given a number behind-the-scene glimpses, both from set photos and videos from the production's various locations, including Cuba, Iceland and Cleveland. Some of these videos were from the production itself, with a new tradition being started entitled #FastFridays, where the cast and crew show fans what they shot during the week. We not only have the most recent #FastFridays video, but also a new photo with Dwayne Johnson, which teases some big changes in store for his character Hobbs.

Dwayne Johnson joined the Fast & Furious franchise in Fast Five as Luke Hobbs, an agent with the Diplomatic Security Service (Dss), who tracks down Dom (Vin Diesel) and his crew. In Fast & Furious 6, he sought out Dom's help in bringing down Owen Shaw (Luke Evans) and he returned in last year's blockbuster Furious 7. While we don't know exactly why »

Rumor: ‘Fast Five’ & ‘Star Trek Beyond’ Director Justin Lin Courted To Direct ‘Akira’

27 June 2016 12:40 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Like an unkillable, unstoppable, unwanted monster in a direct-to-video horror movie sequel, the potential “Akira” remake just keeps on coming. The original Katsuhiro Otomo film is now nearly thirty years old, and it sometimes feels like Hollywood has been attempting to remake it for as much time as that (though Warner Bros. have only had […]

Now a new name has been added to the list. Speaking to Meet The Movie Press, The Wrap writer Jeff Sneider says the studio is keen on "Fast Five" helmer Justin Lin to direct the project.

Justice League may be all the rage today, but before we get to that, Warner Bros. has another DC film lined up for a summer 2017 release - Wonder Woman! Despite limited screen time in her debut film, the critically panned Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice, star Gal Gadot (Fast Five) managed to leave her mark as Diana Prince and as Wonder Woman and left fans clamoring for more. Dwayne Johnson Looks Extra Tough in New 'Fast 8' Photo, Confirms 'Doc Savage'

31 May 2016 12:00 PM, PDT | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

Recently, Dwayne Johnson completed production of a big-screen version of Baywatch, due in theaters on May 19, 2017, and he's already moved on to his next role. It's a familiar character, but Johnson sounds determined to give him a different spin, as evidenced in a new photo (above). Introduced in Fast Five back in 2011, Luke Hobbs was a Diplomatic Secret Service agent who was tasked with tracking down the heroes portrayed by Vin Diesel and Paul Walker. He returned in Fast & Furious 6 and recruited the team to help him take down a villain. In Furious 7, Hobbs has a smaller part, though he is featured in a great action sequence against Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham). In Fast 8, now in production, Hobbs will evidently be presented in a new light. Johnson shared the first...

'Furious 8': First Look at Dwayne Johnson's Hobbs

30 May 2016 7:58 AM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

The Fast & Furious franchise was already moving on up before the Rock's involvement. Yes, it had its relatively low-key beginnings, as well as its jump off the deep end with The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift, but with the fourth film in the entry, Fast & Furious, the series took a welcome turn into the more ridiculous side of things, where it full-on embraced its departure from its origins.

However, it wasn't until Fast Five that the series took off to even greater heights, and perhaps the introduction of The Rock's character, Hobbs, was partially responsible for that. Nowadays, Dwayne Johnson is consider to be franchise adrenaline, and should a film series include him, there's a good chance it'll have at least some sort of success. This was definitely the case with Fast Five, which was the first film in the series to break half a billion at the worldwide box office, »

Dwayne Johnson Teases Fast & Furious 8 Look

29 May 2016 9:47 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Dwayne Johnson is one of the more social media-savvy stars out there, and as the actor prepares to delve into filming on Fast & Furious 8 (which has been underway for some time now, under the watchful eye of Straight Outta Compton helmer F. Gary Gray), he’s teasing the gritty new look his breakout character, agent Luke Hobbs.

Hobbs, who was first introduced as an adversary in Fast Five before becoming an ally of Dom Toretto’s “family” of racing junkies in Fast & Furious 6 and Furious 7, doesn’t appear to be in great shape for this upcoming outing. Previous installments have shown audiences that he has a daughter, for whom he cares for immensely, and a love interest in Elsa Pataky’s Elena Neves, so there are certainly a few pieces in play that could send Hobbs down a dark and dangerous path.

Dwayne Johnson Reveals Hobbs' New Look in Fast and Furious 8

28 May 2016 3:01 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Earlier this week, Fast and Furious 8 jumped from shooting exteriors in Cuba to a locked down set where most of the main actors reunited for photos and a video. Today, we get our first real look at star Dwayne Johnson, who returns to reprise his role as Hobbs. But as you can tell from this post on his personal Instagram, the man looks a lot different. And there is a reason for that. The WWE Superstar turned action icon had this to say about returning for his Agent character.

"When you strip a man of all he has. All that's important to him. You force him to return to his roots...And sometimes that's a very dangerous and twisted place. If I was going to return for another Fast & Furious I wanted to come in and disrupt the franchise in a cool way that got fans fired up and their »

Johnson Reveals More About His "Fast 8" Role

28 May 2016 2:04 PM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

When it comes to curating his social media presence, several key cast members of the "Fast and the Furious" franchise are masters at the art. A serious peer to Vin Diesel and his massive amount of followers is none other than Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson himself who, even with his insanely busy scheduling, still takes time out to offer regular posts for fans.

His posting today for the Memorial Day holiday weekend offers not just a first photo but some new insight into where his character of government bounty hunting agent Luke Hobbs is when we catch up with him in the new film.

We do know his role here will be arguably his biggest in the franchise since his first turn in "Fast Five," and it seems in this Hobbs has fallen on hard times as the villain Cipher (Charlize Theron) basically has everything important to him stripped away. »

The Rock's "Furious" Character Spin-Off Talk

25 May 2016 1:09 PM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Dwayne Johnson's schedule looks pretty busy for the next few years - he recently wrapped "Baywatch" and the second season of HBO's "Ballers," he's currently at work on "Fast and Furious 8," and already has numerous other projects in the works including "Jumanji," "Shazam," "San Andreas 2," "Rampage," "Doc Savage" and more.

Now it looks like the actor may add another film to his slate - a "Fast & Furious" spinoff centering on his character Luke Hobbs. Hobbs, who joined the franchise in 2011's "Fast Five," has quickly become a franchise favorite.

Johnson's producing partner Hiram Garcia spoke with ComicBook.com this week and says that there have always been talks about a Hobbs spinoff, but the main challenge to doing it has been scheduling:

"I think there's always been conversations for that. The scheduling of it all is a challenge but there are always talks about a potential spinoff movie »

'Furious 8': Hiram Garcia Talks Hobbs' Return and Potential Spinoff Film

25 May 2016 10:30 AM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

The Fast & Furious franchise may have been perfectly fine without Dwayne the Rock Johnson, but his presence in Fast Five certainly seemed to have been the extra shot of adrenaline the franchise needed to reach new heights. The ridiculousness of the Rock's character, Hobbs, only got more ridiculous as time went on, and by Furious 7, he was wielding a massive gatling gun mere weeks after having been involved in a near-fatal incident.

The one unfortunate thing with Furious 7, however, was how little screen time Hobbs ultimately had. Due to the scheduling conflicts, they had to make do with the few weeks he had. But can we expect the character to grow more and more marginal as time goes on? It doesn't look like it.

According to an interview with Comicbook.com, Furious 7's consulting producer Hiram Garcia (who will also be involved in Furious 8 to some capacity »

Is Dwayne Johnson's Hobbs Getting a Fast and Furious Spinoff?

25 May 2016 9:30 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Dwayne Johnson has already had an extremely busy year, even though we aren't even half-way through 2016 yet. The actor has finished work on Season 2 of his HBO series Ballers and recently wrapped on Baywatch, which is set to hit theaters next May. Now he's getting ready to move over to Fast and Furious 8, which has already started shooting. It seems the actor could be adding another project to his growing slate in the near future, with new talk of a Fast & Furious spinoff centering on his character, Hobbs.

Dwayne Johnson joined the beloved franchise as Hobbs in 2011's Fast Five, and he has quickly become a franchise favorite, reprising his role in 2013's Fast & Furious 6 and last year's Furious 7. During an interview with ComicBook.com, the actor's producing partner Hiram Garcia teased that there have always been talks about a Hobbs spinoff, but scheduling has become a challenge. »
