Politics of the spin
28 December 2013 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

This was an unusual contribution to the BBC screenplay strand as it was filmed in America and featured an American cast. Although actor John Mahoney is born in Britain.

Peter Gallagher riding high from the earlier Sex, Lies and Videotape essentially makes a cameo appearance. The main star is Griffin Dunne.

Gallagher is a supposedly clean cut, smooth politician but Dunne is out to stop him as he has dirt on him because of their past association. The production was made in the run up to the 1992 Presidential election in the USA and was set at a time when the Republicans had the presidency for 12 years and were right wing spin doctors were experts at the dark art. This production was more sympathetic to Dunne who played a right wing spin doctor.

However 1992 was a sea change in US Presidential politics as Bill Clinton triumphed for the Democrats making this drama more a history piece although a well acted one.
