Is there anything scarier than seeing a helpless child in a state of peril? Probably, but man, do we love watching flicks with kids in danger. Bonus points if they actually bite it! Where were we? Oh yeah, new imagery for Babycall!
Pål Sletaune's Babycall stars The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo's Noomi Rapace, Kristoffer Joner, and Vetle Qvenild Werring.
Babycall follows Anna (Rapace) and her eight-year-old son, Anders, who are under the witness protection program following a difficult relationship with Anders’ father. They move into a large apartment complex. Anna becomes overprotective of her son and even buys a babycall to keep track of him. Soon, strange noises from other apartments appear on the monitor, and Anna overhears what might be the murder of a child. Meanwhile, Anders’ mysterious new friend starts visiting at odd hours, claiming that he has keys for all the doors in the building… »

Bella, Edward, and a vibrator. No, not all together; after all, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 is rated PG-13. It's just that the eclectic Rome Film Festival, currently being held in the Italian capital, has screened 15 minutes from Breaking Dawn: Part 1, in addition to Tanya Wexler's comedy about the invention of the vibrator, Hysteria, featuring Maggie Gyllenhaal and Hugh Dancy (photo). Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner were elsewhere, but Jackson Rathbone and Nikki Reed were in attendance at the Breaking Dawn screening. Also in attendance were Hysteria players Gyllenhaal and Rupert Everett. Hysteria is one of the 15 films in competition in Rome. Others include Pål Sletaune's Babycall, with Noomi Rapace and Kristoffer Joner; Fred Schepisi's The Eye of the Storm, with Geoffrey Rush and Charlotte Rampling; Cédric Kahn's Une vie meilleure, with Guillaume Canet and Leïla Bekhti; and Pawel Pawlikowski's La Femme du cinquième, »

What, exactly, is director Pål Sletaune’s Norwegian horror outing “Babycall” all about? Frankly, does it really matter? The film stars “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” siren Noomi Rapace, a woman I could watch in just about anything. However, seeing as how this is a movie news site and not a platform for my creepy crushes, we’ll just skip straight to the plot synopsis. And here you go: Anna and her eight year old son Anders are under the witness protection program following a difficult relationship with Anders’ father. They move into a large apartment complex. While I don’t consider myself the biggest fan of the popular Millennium Trilogy, I have nothing against its star Noomi Rapace. Neither does Hollywood apparently, with her casting in Sherlock Holmes 2 and possibly the Alien prequels, indicating that the big American studios have taken notice of her considerable talent.
But before she makes that leap completely, you can see her in the Norwegian film Babycall, whose trailer has just arrived thanks to Twitch (via GordonandtheWhale). The film follows Rapace’s character, a woman described by Twitch as “living in hiding with her young baby after getting out of an abusive relationship” whose “life is turned upside down when her baby monitor picks up signals from other apartments in her building, one signal in particular waking her with what seems to be the sound of someone being killed.” You can watch the short, sadly unsubtitled, preview below:
