Storyline

Neil (Ben Affleck) is an American traveling in Europe who meets and falls in love with Marina (Olga Kurylenko), a Ukrainian divorcée who is raising her 10-year-old daughter Tatiana in Paris. The lovers travel to Mont St. Michel, the island abbey off the coast of Normandy, basking in the wonder of their newfound romance. Neil makes a commitment to Marina, inviting her to relocate to his native Oklahoma with Tatiana. He takes a job as an environmental inspector and Marina settles into her new life in America with passion and vigor. After a holding pattern, their relationship cools. Marina finds solace in the company of another exile, the Catholic priest Father Quintana (Javier Bardem), who is undergoing a crisis of faith. Work pressures and increasing doubt pull Neil further apart from Marina, who returns to France with Tatiana when her visa expires. Neil reconnects with Jane (Rachel McAdams), an old flame. They fall in love until Neil learns that Marina has fallen on hard times. ... Written by Magnolia Pictures

Trivia

Rachel Weisz, Jessica Chastain (playing an ex-girlfriend of Ben Affleck's character), Michael Sheen, Amanda Peet, Barry Pepper and Michael Shannon had supporting roles in the film which ended up being cut. Chastain was actually just visiting the set to see old friends from The tree of life (2011) crew and Terrence Mallick was so happy to have her there that he wrote the part and shoot two days with her and Affleck. Depressing
13 June 2013 | by (Winnipeg) – See all my reviews

Not since 'Heaven & Earth (1993)' have I been witness to a more depressing film.

Very well acted. Affleck plays his part as he was intended too would be my guess, but for the most part they very likely could have used a stand in. Olga is a beauty and wonderful to watch. The young actress playing the daughter was exceptional as well.

The story telling I liked, very much like one of my favorites 'Scent of Green Papaya (1993)'. Very little dialogue. So its not that that rubbed me the wrong way.

Its just the story itself that didn't need to be told. Scene after scene of depression inducing imagery. By the time I was half way through I just wanted it to end. The aforementioned 'Heaven & Earth', though equally depressing, at least was a story worth telling.
