Overcoming one's fears
3 February 2012 | by (New York) – See all my reviews

Haley is a bundle of nerves. Her upcoming third try for a driver's license is coming up. If she does not make it this time, she must wait another six months to take the test all over again. Alex is making all kinds of excuses for not going to her school dance. She thinks it is lame to go. Claire owns up to her fear of getting phone calls in the middle of the night. Phil confesses he does not like going on job interviews. Luke is not too keen in getting into tight unlit spaces. All the Dunphys have something that makes them feel afraid.

Cam and Mitchell are also afraid of things; Cam of losing Mitchell, and Mitch of hotel bedspreads. The two are preparing for a brunch with Lily's pediatrician, Dr. Miura, a fine lady of Asian background. They fuss about what they want to prepare, as Cam figures they have to be in the best terms with Dr. Miura. What if Lily would suddenly need a vaccine that has become scarce? Cam wants to be in the doctor's good side.

Jay is not too happy about pigeons, while Manny thinks he would not like to die alone, but he really is afraid of riding the roller coaster. Gloria suggests a trip to the pier so Jay and Manny can fish. Secretly, she had wanted to take Manny for a ride in the thing he hates. Shaming her two men, she goes on to the roller coaster. Manny and Jay finally decide to go with her.

Haley's driving test day comes. She is so afraid she would get the same inspector. Claire suggests her to concentrate and do her best. As it turns out, the same man is going with Haley for the road test. Haley, visibly upset, confronts the man. He is all for being fair, so that, in turn, gives the confidence she needed and passes for her license. Alex goes to the school dance, and finally Phil and Luke device a plan in how to get to the basement of the house, where they make a macabre discovery.

Directed by Reginald Hudlin, and written by Steve Levitan, the creator of the sitcom, this episode concentrates in overcoming our natural fears about things that scare us. Confronting them head on is the only solution to getting over them.
