This is not a bad adaptation, but one must be forewarned about a very drastic change made with the central character. This is no doubt the only film version of the famous story to give the one legged tin soldier two legs! A big mistake, granted! How is he different then? Well, he is not a wind-up as his fellow soldiers. Another change, that's acceptable, is the time of year. Here it is Christmas, and since Hans Christian Andersen is sometimes associated with Christmas(The Fir Tree, The Little Match Girl)no harm is done. What is kept intact, unlike other versions, is the owner of the tin soldier, "the boy". The ending is not really happy(it shouldn't be), but it's not as sad as previous & future adaptations. If you're a fan of Hans Christian Andersen, there's no reason to overlook this one. But if you want only the best, try the Russian film Stoikiy Olovyannyy Soldatik.
