12 Movies You Didn’t Realise Were Just Ripping Off Video Games

2 March 2015 5:25 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Marvel Studios & Konami

The video game medium is frequently said to owe a lot to cinema, given how so many games attempt to evoke the style of a classic Hollywood movie: after all, is Uncharted really anything more than a modern Indiana Jones? However, as gaming has become a more socially acceptable and respected endeavour over the last decade, filmmakers have started taking it more seriously too, and as a result, some of Hollywood’s biggest movies appear to have drawn inspiration from classic games.

Once upon a time, the term “video game-esque” was used to refer to movies in only a strictly negative sense, but that simply isn’t true anymore. These 12 movies are either stylistically or thematically indebted to a famous video game, whether the creators themselves care to admit it or not. And no, the likes of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Act Of Valor won’t be appearing here, »

TV Ratings: 2015 Academy Awards numbers appear to be down

23 February 2015 9:30 AM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Fast National ratings for Sunday, February 22, 2015. Whether it was lack of interest in the nominated films, lack of interest in host Neil Patrick Harris or a third thing that could cause disinterest, overnight ratings for the 2015 Academy Awards were down double-digits from last year's telecast in most measures. Of course, ABC's Oscars coverage still dominated Sunday, which featured only low-rated installments of "60 Minutes" and "Dateline" as new competition. Remember the usual provisos: These are time period-specific numbers for ABC and *not* numbers for the Academy Awards telecast. On the East Coast, the show went over an hour over outside of primetime. On the West Coast, the first 90 minutes of the show were outside of Sunday primetime. The actual numbers for the Oscars will adjust up. They always do. Stay tuned for those real Oscars ratings a bit later. On to the numbers... Among adults 18-49, ABC averaged an 8.8 rating for Sunday night, »

Weekend Report: Moviegoers Flee From 'Fifty Shades'

22 February 2015 12:00 PM, PST | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Coming off a massive holiday weekend, Fifty Shades of Grey plummeted 74 percent in its second outing. Still, the movie easily held on the top spot this weekend with $22.3 million.Among the new releases, McFarland, USA and The Duff did solid business, while Hot Tub Time Machine 2 flopped.Fifty Shades of Grey's 74 percent drop is steeper than the second weekend declines for The Fault in our Stars, Valentine's Day, and all five Twilight movies. It's the second-biggest decline ever for a movie playing at over 3,000 locations; the worst belongs to the Friday the 13th remake, which fell 80 percent on this same weekend in 2009.Adapted from an immensely popular book and opening on Valentine's Day weekend, Fifty Shades of Grey was always going to be fairly front-loaded. Still, the movie's horrible reviews (25 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) and weak word-of-mouth ("C+" CinemaScore) surely contributed in some way.Fifty Shades has now earned $129.2 million, »

Clint Eastwood’s “American Sniper”: the highest grossing war film of all time

2 February 2015 9:51 AM, PST | Hollywoodnews.com | See recent Hollywoodnews.com news »

Right before last weekend began, something truly unexpected happened. Yes, Clint Eastwood’s controversial but hugely popular and profitable war film American Sniper passed Steven Spielberg’s classic Saving Private Ryan to become the number one movie of its ilk of all time at the box office. In short, not only is it the top grossing film about the post 9/11 terrorism related wars, which have been iffy at the box office to date, it’s surpassed all the films about World War II and every other conflict as well, taking in an estimated $249 million, as of today (it also just had the second biggest Super Bowl weekend take ever). Just a month or so ago, no one would have ever dreamed about this. If you’re looking for the main reason why American Sniper is a dark horse in all of its Oscar categories, this is why. Money can talk. »

Relativity Media Invests in Digital Publisher Say Media, Angela Courtin Joins Board

21 January 2015 7:00 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Expanding its in-house marketing capabilities, Relativity Media has made an investment in Say Media and will use the firm to promote its films and TV shows, music, fashion, sports and branded entertainment divisions.

Relativity Media’s chief marketing officer Angela Courtin has joined the board of directors of New York-based Say Media, as part of the undisclosed investment, which gives it a minority stake in the company.

Courtin has been looking for more ways to exploit the company’s various departments digitally since joining Relativity last summer as Cmo. As more consumers turn to online platforms for entertainment, Relativity sees Say Media’s technology as a way to connect with its target audience.

Say Media’s Tempest publishing platform essentially creates digital magazines, with the company also handling advertising sales. It helped launched online publications for xoJane, xoVain, Fashionista, Gear Patrol, Remodelista, Not Impossible Now, ReadWrite, LifetimeMoms, and Bio — many popular with millennials. »
