Michael Helfand, Joe Matukewicz Named Co-Heads of Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions (Exclusive)

With Steve Bersch recently being tapped to head Screen Gems, Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has named Michael Helfand and Joe Matukewicz as the new co-heads of the company.

Bersch took over for former president Clint Culpepper in January after a decade of profitability at Spwa. He is currently the President of Spwa and Screen Gems and made the announcement in an internal memo.

Helfand and Matukewicz will continue their oversight of the business and creative operations, respectively, while expanding their roles to jointly oversee the day-to-day management of Spwa’s wide-ranging properties and ventures, including its key focus on independently produced motion picture and episodic content for various distribution platforms.

Both will report to Bersch.

Helfand and Matukewicz have been behind a number of recent hits, such as Fede Alvarez’s thriller “Don’t Breathe,” the “Insidious” franchise, Angela Robinson’s “Professor Marston and the Wonder Women,” “Spotlight,” “Manchester by the Sea,

Blumhouse Picks Up New Sci-Fi/Horror Flick Invasion From Leprechaun Writer

Even if some of their films haven’t been your cup of tea, none of us can deny the force in the industry that Blumhouse Productions has become. In the past decade or so, they’ve enthralled audiences with new franchises such as Paranormal Activity, Insidious, Ouija, The Purge and, my personal favorite, Sinister, to name but a few.

But now, they’re aiming to find new ways of keeping us awake at night, this time via Invasion, a sci-fi horror flick that involves a home invasion that happens during an alien invasion. Sounds cool, right? The company snagged the rights to the spec script this week, and it comes to us from Into the Storm‘s John Swetnam and Leprechaun: OriginsHarris Wilkinson.

Plot details are still scarce, and understandably so, but Deadline says that the film includes themes like immigration and features a strong female lead. It’s far too early for casting,

The Preview Reel: Is A Wrinkle in Time Your Best Bet?

Welcome to the “Preview Reel” column, where we look at the week’s upcoming wide-release movies. Black Panther continued its box-office dominance as it passed the $500 million mark domestically this past weekend. This week, Disney looks to keep up its winning ways with not only Black Panther, but with A Wrinkle in Time as well. The Mouse House will have a lot of competition as three other wide releases also open in the form of The Hurricane Heist, The Strangers: Prey at Night, and Gringo. There are a lot of options, but which are worth a trip to the cineplex?

A Wrinkle in Time

What we are excited about: Ava DuVernay is one of the more intriguing directors working right now with her last two movies, Selma (2014) and 13th (2016), receiving a lot of awards attention. She always brings a strong style and unique flair to each of her projects, so

Insidious 5 is Reportedly in Development Because The Franchise is a Big Cash Cow

I am a huge fan of the Insidious horror franchise. I've enjoyed the film's that they have made and it turns out that the last movie in the franchise, Insidious: The Last Key, turned out the be the highest grossing film in the franchise! Here's a breakdown of how much each film has made:

Insidious: The Last Key (2018) — $164.4MInsidious Chapter 2 (2013) — $161.9MInsidious Chapter 3 (2015) — $113.0MInsidious (2011) — $97.M

According to Bloody-Disgusting, Bumhouse is reportedly developing a fifth Insidious film, which shouldn't come as a surprise. I'm just curious to see what the next chapter in the franchise will entail! One bit of information that the report does drop about the next film is that it will unlikely be another prequel.

Even though James Wan has remained a producer on the franchise over the course of the four films, it would be cool to see him come back to direct another one. I doubt it will happen,

Insidious 5 Planned Following Surprise Success of Insidious 4

Insidious 5 Planned Following Surprise Success of Insidious 4
It looks like Insidious 5 is happening. This should come as a bit of a surprise in one sense and, in another sense, it's pretty expected. From the studio's perspective, this is a franchise that just keeps making money and, based on the box office brought in by this year's Insidious: The Last Key, people are interested in these movies now more than ever. From a story perspective, it's a little hard to imagine where Insidious could go from here, which is why this may be a bit surprising. But money talks and there's clearly a lot of money to be made here.

Before digging into why this is a financial no-brainer for Universal and Blumhouse, let's dig into what we know about Insidious 5 which, at this stage, isn't all that much, unfortunately. What we do know is that it's being reported that a fifth entry in the franchise created by

Sony's 'Jumanji' Dominates January 2018 Box Office

Sony's 'Jumanji' Dominates January 2018 Box Office
Despite there being a new Star Wars film in theaters, this past January saw Sony's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle lead the way, playing a huge role in the month finishing just ahead of last January despite there being 28 fewer films in theaters. Sony also led all distributors with over $200 million in grosses followed closely by Fox, which saw continued success from a pair of Oscar nominees in The Post and the continued strong performance of The Greatest Showman, which is currently working on a 17x multiplier since its late December release. Sony was the only studio in January to gross over $200 million, led by Jumanji's $171.7 million, accounting for 84% of the studio's total monthly gross and besting Star Wars: The Last Jedi in second place by $77.2 million. In fact, Jumanji's January gross was the fifth largest of all-time behind the likes of Avatar ($312.1m), Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Sony's Steve Bersch on Taking Over Screen Gems and the State of Indie Filmmaking

It’s an impressive stat that comes with a small asterisk: Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions president Steve Bersch, 61, runs the most profitable division within the studio. The caveat is that with just 20 employees, Spwa doesn’t carry the same overhead as, say, Columbia Pictures, given that it is not a releasing entity. Still, during his 10-year stint, Spwa boasts films such as Arrival, the Insidious franchise, Spotlight, Whiplash, Foxcatcher, Don’t Breathe and the upcoming Tom Hanks-starring Greyhound. On Jan. 19, Bersch’s purview expanded even further when he took the reins of Screen Gems following the announcement that Clint Culpepper was...

How the Spierig Brothers Convinced Helen Mirren to Join Their New Horror Film, Winchester

Image Source: Everett Collection For decades, a main staple of horror movies was the presence of a young, nubile damsel in distress; what would Friday the 13th or Halloween be without an Alice or a Laurie? In recent years, the genre has thankfully begun to explore new territory. Instead of 18-year-old, scantily-clad white women running for their lives, we've been given heroes like Get Out's Chris (Daniel Kaluuya), a young black man, or the Insidious franchise's Elise, played by 74-year-old Lin Shaye. When directing-duo Michael and Peter Spierig - frequently referred to as the Spierig Brothers - set out to bring the chilling legend of San Jose's Winchester Mystery House to life in the aptly titled Winchester, they had a similar idea in mind. The supposedly haunted house, which you can actually go visit, was once the home of Sarah Winchester, heiress to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. After the

Octavia Spencer Reunites With ‘The Help’ Director Tate Taylor on ‘Ma’ (Exclusive)

Octavia Spencer Reunites With ‘The Help’ Director Tate Taylor on ‘Ma’ (Exclusive)
Octavia Spencer is reuniting with “The Help” director Tate Taylor on “Ma,” a new film that’s being described as a combination of a horror flick and a psychological thriller. “Ma” will be produced by Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions, the makers of “Insidious,” “The Purge,” and the Oscar-nominated smash “Get Out.”

“It’s dark material, but it’s also really fun,” said Taylor. “Octavia is so damn likable that we usually see her in certain roles. But she’s such a good actress and this is such a complex character that if I do my job right people in the audience are going to want to push pause and say, ‘can we please take you out for coffee so you don’t do what you’re about to do.'”

Juliette Lewis, an Oscar nominee for “Cape Fear,” and Luke Evans, last seen trying to woo Belle in “Beauty and the Beast,” will co-star.

The Purge 4 Teaser Announces the First Purge

The Purge 4 Teaser Announces the First Purge
Universal and Blumhouse have launched the first teaser for The Purge 4. It arrived during last night's State of the Union address, following Trump and his words of encouragement for the country. The announcement video doesn't quite mock the President's speech, but it adheres to what Trump had to say about keeping America great.

"What makes America great? The answer is simple, really, Americans make America great. You are the lifeblood of the nation. Your rights as Americans must be safeguarded. There's only one solution to keep our country great. A new tradition. Participate today, and it will make you prouder than when your boy looks up at you and says, 'Dad, I want to Purge, too!'"

This first trailer arrived just hours after Universal and Blumhouse revealed the official title, with the sequel actually a prequel. It is called The First Purge, and will bring fans back to that

Sundance Film Review: ‘Hereditary’

Sundance Film Review: ‘Hereditary’
It’s easy to see why “Hereditary” was chosen to play in the Midnight section of the Sundance Film Festival. It’s a freaky trance-out of a supernatural thriller, all about a family that’s being torn apart by ghosts, and it’s full of things that would look right at home in the megaplex horror-film-of-the-week (except, in this case, for how artfully done they are). It has séances with mysterious moving objects. It has decapitated bodies and crawling ants (as opposed to, you know, buzzing flies). And it has visitations by figures from the afterlife, who stand stock still and nude and grinning in a way that’s more insidious than anything in the “Insidious” films. (At the sight of the first ghost, I literally felt a creeping chill pass through me.)

My question is: Why isn’t “Hereditary” part of the Dramatic Competition at Sundance? It appears the programmers may have some of the same

Screen Gems Shake-Up: Clint Culpepper Steps Down, Steve Bersch Takes Over (Exclusive)

Screen Gems Shake-Up: Clint Culpepper Steps Down, Steve Bersch Takes Over (Exclusive)
Clint Culpepper is stepping down as head of Screen Gems, the Sony Pictures division that specializes in lower-budget genre films, Variety has learned.

He will be replaced by Steve Bersch, the head of Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions, according to insiders. Culpepper helped rekindle the Screen Gems label in 1998 and was responsible for several hits such as “The Exorcism of Emily Rose,” “Think Like a Man,” and the “Resident Evil” franchise. However, Screen Gems has struggled to field as many success stories in recent years. Its most recent release, the action film “Proud Mary,” bowed to an underwhelming $9.9 million when it opened this month. Culpepper was recently informed that his contract, which was due up, would not be renewed. He will remain a part of Sony’s film family in some capacity through a production deal with the studio.

A spokesman for Sony declined to comment on Bersch’s promotion. In a note to staff, Sony Pictures
